She's With Stupid

Rate this book
Emilie Thatcher has mixed feelings when her best friend announces that she is getting married. On one hand, a wedding for Kate will mean a lot of hassle and responsibility for Emilie, who will most certainly be expected to "help" Kate with all the planning (i.e. do everything). On the other hand, Kate's wedding will also mean lots of bonding time with her other best friend and co-maid of honor Lana, who might even be persuaded to ditch her band in California and move back home to New Bern, Ohio to help Emilie talk Kate out of marrying a guy who, to be completely honest, smells disturbingly like cheese. On the other hand (they really should make more hands), Kate's wedding also means that Emilie will be forced to come face to face with her first (okay, maybe only) love, Ethan Drake. Though it's been years since Ethan broke her heart and left her without a backward glance, Emilie has never been able to completely forget about the jerk. So how is she supposed to go on pretending to be over him if she has to make small talk with him and pose for pictures with him and refrain from kissing and/or slapping him if this farce of a wedding actually ends up happening?

One thing is for certain: this next year promises to be full of laughter, surprises, and at least one overwrought groomsman in tears. Also, there could maybe, possibly, okay, definitely, be some sexy shenanigans behind the bleachers... So, really, what could possibly go wrong?

I should preface this by saying I picked this up as a free book from Amazon. And sadly, I have to admit, that’s exactly what it read like.

Simply: Three friends who go through life in relationships with guys who are stupid and their personal journey to figure it out the hard way.

While the concept of the book is quite intriguing the writing itself left something to be desired. My guess would be this author is a hobby writer. It took me EIGHT days to get through this book which is unheard of for me. Granted, I’ve been busy with life BUT usually at nights when all is quiet, I can quickly finish a book that is an enjoyable read. She’s with Stupid isn’t terrible, per say, I think that this writer just needs some time to grow in her craft.

It started off extremely slow. I’m not sure if it was lack of detail or the three entwined friends plot but I had a hard time remembering who was who and what was what in the very beginning. Several times I was lost within the pages due to the really random vocabulary. It was an easy read and then WHAM out of no where there is just this SAT level word thrown in that made you stop and have to think or highlight to find the meaning of the word which caused it to flow at a funky pace. It was like she wrote all these sentences and then all of a sudden thought her wording was shallow so she highlighted it and picked a random word from the program’s thesaurus. It really threw off the simplicity of the read and tried to form the book to be something it just was not. I think if these crazy descriptive words would have been left out it would have made it a much more pleasant read. At one point a character is called one name and then later in the book has been given a different one. Also, there were several words just completely left out. Occasionally there was a he or it that had been typed over and I was left re-reading the sentence in order to figure out what would make sense.

She’s with Stupid wasn’t terrible. In fact, I think it could definitely have potential. I took the eight days to finish the book which says something but until about 60% in I was really struggling to keep up. It was definitely predictable and the characters could have been written a little less annoying and a little bit more complex to draw in the reader’s attention. The development of Emilie, Kate and Lana was slow and could have been done in half the pages but it’s a feel good story about friendship and the stupid boys we tend to fall in love with even though they are terrible choices.
Mainly, I was pretty upset by the ending. It just ends loosely and with a lot of questions. Maybe the author is contemplating writing a second book and calling it a series but I don’t think it’s one I’ll be picking up.

This one just carried on with wedding stuff. There's a reason I've been with my partner for 19years and can't be arsed getting married. (Just changed my name, cheaper, and easier to change back if he gives me the shits, all good!)

Would like to rate this three and a half stars, but will have to settle for three. Picked this one up for free. About half of the way through, I wanted to kick Kate, shake Emelie and slap Lana, in that order, and the ending reminded me of a Coen Brothers movie, and not in a good way.

This book was really hard to read. The characters were really shallow and unlikable. I found myself skimming through to get to the end only because I have this need to at least finish what I start reading. Big mistake this only got worse!
