The Devil's Diary

Idealistic love and death, sibling rivalry and obsessive lust are themes familiar to McGinley's work, focusing here on Arty Brennan, who built factories, a supermarket and a noisy motel, trading a spiritually enriching culture for a "hippiedrome" of second-rate 20th century glitter.

Dark, clever, funny, wicked, intelligent: that is, everything you expect from Patrick McKinley. Adding to the enjoyment are deviously subtle observations on the art of the novel itself, with the diary's author unable to predict the actions of his own characters.

very philosophical for a mystery. although the ending was inevitable, I didn't like it.

The writing is still good, but not as good a story as his other book, Bogmail.
