Ever since I was a girl, I had only one career goal: to write for a living. And so I have! I've written more than forty trade and textbooks and about a thousand articles for national publications.

Along the way I fell in love with Italian and wrote LA BELLA LINGUA: My Love Affair with Italian, the World's Most Enchanting Language, which became a New York Times best-seller and earned me the great honor of an Italian knighthood.

I then wrote a biography of Mona (Madame) Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo, the real woman in Leonardo's iconic portrait. MONA LISA: A Life Discovered was an Amazon "best book of the year" in art history and was translated into six languages.

LA PASSIONE: How Italy Seduced the World is a sweeping journey through three thousand years of Italian history, celebrating the great contributions of Italy’s artists, artisans, writers, film directors, racers, fashion designers—and more. It appeals to the Italian in all our souls, inspiring us to be as daring as Italy’s gladiators, as eloquent as its poets, as alluring as its beauties, and as irresistible as its lovers.

I was assigned this book as a textbook for a personal health and wellness course for my public health degree.

First off, I can’t imagine what in the world a journalist is doing writing anything that is public health related. It seems inappropriate.

Secondly, her obvious biases come through loud and clear-something someone in public health shouldn’t have...but I guess that doesn’t apply to her since she’s not in the public health field. She has strong bias over monogamous relationships, promotes marriage, having children in marriage, abstinence, etc. She’s also confused between the obvious difference between sexual orientation and gender identity.

Those things aside the book was written in and easy to understand way and had many pictures, graphs, self-quizzes and high gloss pages. I do wish the glossary was filled out more and the index was more comprehensive.

This was a very instructive book that helped me understand all the different dimensions of health. If you are interested in learning about health, I would recommend that you read this book. Even if you are not going to use some of the information presented in the book, it is good to have that knowledge. I read this book for a Health Science class that I took, and really enjoyed not only the class but reading the textbook! I know it sounds crazy, but if you want to learn about health, this is a really interesting and at times fun, book to read.

This was quite informative but not what I would usually read. If it hadn't been required for my hygiene class i'd have not read it.
