Henry Steele Commager was an American historian who helped define Modern liberalism in the United States for two generations through his 40 books and 700 essays and reviews.
I re-read a paperback which has been around here for a long time, proceeding in bits and snatches between other reading over the past couple of months. It's a compilation of excerpts from diaries, letters, and other writings of officers, soldiers, and civilians affected by the Civil War. Some of them make for gripping reading while others are a struggle.
This is a great book for multiple reasons. First, one can read first hand details of dairies from both sides of the civil war. It is interesting to read firsthand of these perspectives. The narrator/author also does a fine job of introducing each writer by giving a background of who this person is and also of the historical context in which it is written. I am anxious to read part 2. Well done.
