The Shepherd's Song: A Story of Second Chances

Rate this book
Shortly before suffering a tragic car accident, Kate McConnell wrote the simple but powerful words of Psalm 23 on a piece of paper to give to her wayward and confused son. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. . . . As she loses consciousness from her injuries, she wonders if she’s done enough with her life.

When a lonely dry-cleaning employee finds Kate’s humble, handwritten copy of the psalm, it begins an incredible journey around the world, forever changing the lives of twelve very different people. From a soldier wounded in Iraq, to a young Kurdish girl fleeing with her family to Turkey, to a Kenyan runner about to begin the Rome Invitational Marathon, the power of the ancient words begins to take shape in various ways, drawing us into these stories inexplicably linked by the passing of the psalm from one recipient to the next.

Eventually, Kate’s paper makes it back to its starting place, and she discovers the unexpected ways that God moves and changes lives through even our smallest actions.

The Shepherd's Song follows a piece of paper on which the 23rd psalm is written. This piece of paper finds its way into the hands of 12 different people around the world, people who need spiritual help in some form or another. Each and every one of them finds comfort in one of the lines in the psalm, and gets a second chance in life, to move on and start again.

Each story, though short, was well written, with a depth of beauty and meaning to it. Was it moving? Yes it was. Did I have a big lump in my throat? You bet I did! especially reading the last chapter.

Now though for the personal bit. The day I finished this book, I had to have a routine eye test. It turned out that, even though I had no symptoms, there was a problem with my eyes which would need surgery to correct at some point in the future. I left feeling shocked and a little upset! I then bumped into a friend immediately after, and was telling him about the problem (and yes feeling a bit sorry for myself). As we were stood talking, a young lady (probably in her twenties) approached us with a white stick. This girl was clearly visually impaired, but just getting on with life. Well to say it stopped me short is an understatement! My immediate thoughts were, how can I feel sorry for myself when MY problem can be corrected. Now whether I'd have felt that way if I hadn't just finished this book I don't know, but I won't complain again about it. A lovely book with a real feel good factor.

From King David's Psalm- Psalm 23:

The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.

It doesn't matter whether you are a believer or not, but these strong, powerful lines can change a million lives so surprisingly and can bring you closer to the Lord, thereby believing him and in his ways.

Betsy Duffey and Laurie Myers, together known as the Writing Sisters, have penned down a beautiful and an inspiring tale called, The Shepherd's Song: A Story of Second Chances, which is embedded with the powerful lines of the Psalm23. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. - written in a piece of paper, makes it way so surprisingly into 12 different human beings around the world and how strongly it impact those lives. After reading this story, I believe that any atheist like me will be able to see the power right through those words.

Thanks to the author, Betsy Duffey, for giving me this opportunity to read and review her book.

Kate-a mother and a wife, hopes that before dying she could bring her college-bound son closer to God. Kate has met with a fatal accident and right before she is taken into the surgery room, she jots down the lines from Psalm 23 in a piece of paper and put it in her son's coat. Surprisingly, just like God’s own deeds, that small piece of paper landed in so many different countries of the world before reaching to its right owner. From the dry-cleaner to the sister writing for her soldier brother in Iraq, from the Gulf of Naples to Barcelona, each line of the Psalm 23 represent one life-changing story. Someone regained his or her lost faith, someone started to believe for the first, some got lead back to the right path, some found a way out of their sorrow, and some found their new life. But finally the note makes way to Kate's life thereby answering her prayers.

First, the authors have made a marvelous effort in restoring the faith of anyone whoever reads this book. Those 12 short stories and those 12 different lives are bound to make an impact on any reader's life. Although the stories were quite brief and precise, but still they were long enough to make us see through their lives. I loved how the authors have finally made us believe that the Lord is the shepherd and we are his flock of sheep and if we have the shepherd in our lives, we will not lack from anything and also how even small things can drastically change our lives. The characters are really very well-developed and how easily we all could relate to them. Some might even be luckier to find a character just like them, and following that character's tale might even change your own life. I can honestly confess that my perspective has changed way too much, I can see things more clearly and yes I now believe that believing in a supreme power doesn't hurt much, instead it helps to guide us in our paths. It is really amazing to see how the authors have kept us on the loop with Kate's story till the very end. The stories are very well-written thus making them uplifting and encouraging.

Whatever may be your religion or culture or opinion is, do read this book for sure and watch yourself feeling lighter and happier, even for a split second!

How is it that something that has always been such a part of my memory, my childhood, my adulthood, my personal journey mean so many different things to different people? Psalm 23. This book weaves together the stories of twelve different people in such a way that you feel like you are in that small moment with each character. Parts of the Psalm make way into the life of these characters in such simple ways that cause a change, a feeling, a thought,as though God just whispered it yet it was on a small piece of paper passed along on a journey. I found myself seeing, even feeling bits of myself in the characters. Although I found myself anticipating the next step in the journey of this Psalm through the book, I was never right about what was really going to happen with the characters. God is near.
I would read this book again and I feel that I would discover something new about the characters and myself and God's role as the Shepherd.
What Betsy Duffey and Laurie Myers have done with this book, will surely reach you where you are and allow you to explore the fibers that connect us to each other as His sheep, even when we don't realize it.

A beautiful testament to the power of scripture to touch and elevate the human heart. A finely-crafted story which follows the 23rd Psalm, written on a scrap of paper, as it circles the world, received by those who need it most.

12 (+2) stories about second chances interlinked by, quite literally, Deus Ex Machina; or minus the Machina part, that is.

The connecting element of a sheet of paper flying around the world changing peoples' lives feels tenuous at best and hardly believable. It does not stand careful scrutiny if one were to do a nitpicking exercise to determine the logistics of the piece of paper being exposed to the elements around the world for a prolonged period of time, for example, which would normally present a serious argument that suspension of disbelief is warranted.

But then again these are stories about divine intervention in their very nature. Subtle, but powerful, life-changing intervention, so the sketchy connection is in fact right as it should be. God works in mysterious ways.

All that left aside, the book is written in a very accessible way. It is devoid of pretense altogether, but it also has no masterful grasp of the written word (although it uses The Word quite on point), possesses not a glimpse of intricate plot maneuvers or any spectacular use of literary tropes and figures.

But it works.

I counted 6 occasions where I cried. The truthfulness of the emotion and resolution presented in the stories of second chances, possibly all the more emphasised because of the aforementioned linguistic and literary simplicity, was hard to ignore. If such a sheer, honest and cleansing emotion was instilled in myself the critical reader, then it most definitely means that the book achieved its purpose and did so exceptionally well.

Even a piece if SAND can cause the GREATEST of avalanches! This book is that piece of sand.
Amazing!
If you have ever wondered if you have ever made some difference in your life, then you should definitely need to read this book. This books will make you believe that EVERYONE makes even the smallest dent in others lives.
With each individual chapter, you will enjoy a story all its own, culminating in the assurance if one individual that she did make the world a brighter and more fulfilled place, and even in the one MOST IMPORTANT INDIVIDUAL she was trying to make a dent in.
You will be waiting for every new chapter and the characters you meet, their stories, will make a dent in your life.
These authors have made their dent....thank you.

I have got to win a copy of this book....PLEASE!!!!!!!!
This book is one of those great books that just makes you feel like you really have to got to read it, and only by just reading the blurb.
It is one of those books where the character, like me, wonders if she really matters in this big chaotic world.
In the book, not for real life me, what she doesn't know is that she was a grain of sand, that can create the biggest of avalanches, yet not even realize it.
I really want to read this book.

What a fantastic story, , Kate writes Psalm 23,, The Shepherds Song, for her wayward son,, not longer after writing it, is involved in a car accident, , her piece of paper, with the psalm written on it,, travels around the world, , changing lives,, and comes back to Kate,, It is beautifully written, , and even though I am not overly religious, , I felt so uplifted reading this amazing book,, I was 32/100 to win a copy,, how do I know? it has a sticker inside,, now I pass it on,to somebody else.. The odd thing is, I haven't been well, and just when I was feeling really fed up, , this arrives, , God moves in mysterious ways,,, It helped, and made me feel,, that things happen for a reason, , no matter who or what you believe in,as long as you have faith,, you will never be alone,,

Sister's Betsy Duffy and Laurie Myers novel The Shepherd's Song (Howard Books) follows a piece of paper with Psalm 23 written on it in a journey around the world. Each time it is passed along, whether intentional or not, a different line impacts another character's story. The journey of this piece of paper begins when Kate McConnell wrote and prayed over each verse for her son. She finds herself in a serious car accident and wonders if she's done anything significant with her life. Little does she know what impact her little gestures make. The bible verse makes itself to 12 different people around the world; from America, to Turkey, to Rome and so one. Eventually this piece of paper makes it's way back to Kate's son.

Each section is a little too quick, and leaves a longer to find out more about the character. However, each story needed to be short in respect to the novel's entirety. Respectively so, all is revealed in the end. Because of the verses and stories being sectioned out, this one is a quick read.

This novel is a great reminder of how much little genuine acts mean; like looking someone in the eye or writing them an encouraging note. God uses our small acts for His great plan, and it's okay that we don't necessarily always know how much what we do really means.

The Shepherd's Song, released March 11, 2014, is a fast paced read with a solid reminder of how much the small things in our lives mean. While the small stories are a bit rushed it all comes together in the end, so hold tight.

I really enjoyed this book as it's about the poem Psalm 23 - The Lord's Shepherd's. It takes you on a journey with a woman who asks God to please make her life mean something. She gives the Psalm's to her son. He forgets to take it out of his pocket when he takes it to the dry cleaners. Then the book takes you on a journey with the piece of paper moving from hand to hand and how it effects different lives with each verse.

Each verse is a chapter in the book and what someone is going through as they are reading this scripture.
I love how it gave you a perspective on each verse.

Psalm 23
Psalm 23 King James Version (KJV)

23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

This is definitely not my go to genre but I did enjoy this grouping of stories intertwined and connected by the 23rd Psalm.

If you enjoy Dan Walsh or Mitch Albom or just need a quick pick me up of inspiration then this is the book for you.

Or, if you're like me, a break from the murder and mayhem that you usually read.

The Bible Verse I first Learned as a Child...

I would imagine that most believers in God and the Holy Bible are familiar with the 23rd Psalm. I know that as a youth and as a young adult I knew this scripture by heart. Now, here I am a good bit older and though I remember most of this psalm I admit I’m unable to readily repeat it verbatim. But, today having just finished this book, does it really matter. I certainly still know what it meant to me as a youth and what it still means to me today!
I found this book an amazing read. We are taken on an emotional ride by way of a sheet of simple paper that our main character has written the 23rd Psalm upon. She wrote the psalm in order to reach out to her angry son and reconnect with he in someway in an attempt to bring him back to God.
Through each individual passage of the psalm, we meet an individual who is facing their own emotional existence. We encounter fear, pain, insecurity, loneliness, grief, and much more.
The story of How this single document find its way around the World and affects the lives of our characters is amazing. But, of course, how the letter ultimately returns to where it started lends itself to making us temporarily “suspend our disbelief” and simply revel in this beautiful story

As Kate McConnell is rushed into surgery, she vaguely remembers the car accident that brought her to where she is presently. As she tries desperately to piece it all together she remembers the fight she had with her son upon finding a note she wrote to him that simply contained the words of the 23rd Psalm on it. Tucked away in his coat pocket she had hoped that one day he might find his way to Jesus but once again he fought her constant efforts to remind him of his shortcoming in still remaining the prodigal son. Now as she slips into that perfect sleep brought on by the administrations of medication before surgery, she releases her life to Jesus asking only that He make her life count somehow.

As John McConnell rushes to the hospital hoping to meet his son Matt there, neither of them can understand how Kate has managed to be in an accident. She was literally the rock that kept the family together, and after meeting with her doctor, he can only provide them with a vague answer that she might be able to pull through despite the odds against her. Now all Matt and John can do is to pray that God will return Kate to them. All Matt can remember is their argument this morning and how despite his mom's best intentions, he never meant for these to be his final words to her. He struggles with understanding that his mom isn't looking to interfering with his life, but to enable him to find a source of peace and contentment in including Jesus in it. He only wishes he can have the opportunity to tell her himself.

In the novel, The Shepherd's Song, by authors Betsy Duffey and Laurie Myers, as known as the Writing Sisters, they take a simple random event like the notation of the 23rd Psalm and show how God can take something simple and connect all the dots along the way. It reminded me of Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven. How each person who encounters Kate McConnell's handwritten note containing only the 23rd Psalm makes life changing moments occur all around the world, from a young man who wears the coat on the snowy night that Kate is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, knowing he will return the coat to the cleaners in the morning and finds the note in the pocket, to a chance meeting in a coffee house where he passes the note along to a girl he meets there who is writing to her brother in the war in Iraq. From there it finds its way into the hands of just the right person who needs to hear another line in the 23rd Psalm, where it winds up full circle again to the man who needs to hear it the most.

This is one of those novels that once you read it, you walk away with a feeling of touching something inspiring and touched by God. It really makes you consider all those random moments we have every single day that when it is all said and done, Jesus shows us where it all those ripples lead and how we are each connected to one another in remarkable ways. The authors compare this much to Andy Andrew's The Butterfly Effect which I agree. I thought the ending would be different than what I imagined but love where they took it instead. This is the perfect book for those that often wonder what their life's purpose is and just where God is at in all the day to day happenings in our life. I easily give this book a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion. I received this book compliments of the authors Betsy Duffey and Laurie Myers who reached out to me and asked I would review this for them. I am so humbled and honored that they did! I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I was instantly drawn into Kate McConnell’s situation. She’s opened her eyes and notices she is in an ambulance. She hears the siren is blowing. What happened? Why is she here? Her body hurt why? Was this her time? Her brain was foggy.

Kate wished she had more time to make an impact on people’s lives by sharing the good news of the gospel if her time on earth was over. She felt she’d not done well in this department of her life. The day before the accident she felt lead to neatly hand write out Psalm 23 on a piece of paper and give it to her son. She prayed over the paper while she wrote it. Her son Matt found the note and blew up at his mother. He put the note in his pocket and stormed off leaving Kate wondering had she really heard from God about writing the note in the first place.

This book follows the paper as each person sees something different in it for their life’s situation. The first person to discover the note is the man at the cleaners. He puts his hand in the pocket to get ready for cleaning and finds the piece of paper with Psalm 23 on it. The man remembers reading this Psalm in his childhood; he wonders how he had gone astray.

Later on this man meets someone in a coffee shop and feels led to give her the Psalm 23 paper. She feels lead to send it to her brother that is stationed in Iraq and so goes the journey of the note. Each chapter highlights a verse from the passage and what it means to the person reading Psalm. One of the powerful themes running throughout the story is “no matter what has happened in our lives or what we've done, God is always ready to welcome you back into the fold. One author said, “The beauty of the bible is it crosses cultures to heal and give hope to all life’s situations.”

These authors are sisters who have written children’s books for 20 years. This is their first collaboration and first adult fiction book they've written. They used a single document to create their work. Each could access, either could add and/or make changes at will. They both said, “We love the idea that though fiction you can show how holy words can heal and give hope and change lives.”
One of their biggest challenges in this project was, “to look at these familiar words with fresh eyes and ways to imagine how God could work in a person’s life through each phrase.” Because each chapter deals from a phrase from Psalm 23 and a person’s reaction to it.

This is an encouraging fun read. It would be good for book clubs too. The authors have included twelve discussion questions to help generate lively conversation. There are three additional activities you could do to enhance the book club environment. Oh, be sure not to miss the interview in the back with both authors. It will give you insight into the book and its creators.

The Shepherd's Song is based on the 23rd Psalm. One Psalm that means so much to so many people. The book starts with Kate McConnell, a wife and mother, whose son fell away from God when he started college. Kate was constantly encouraging Matt and trying to help him find God again. On that fateful morning, Kate slipped a paper into Matt's coat pocket. On it she had carefully and meticulously written the words of Psalm 23. The paper was left in his coat pocket when she took it to the cleaners and, soon after, Kate was involved in a multi-vehicle accident on the interstate. She felt like her life didn't matter, that she hadn't accomplished anything for God's ministry. Little did she know that tiny slip of paper she had toiled over so tediously while writing Psalm 23 was on its way around the world and would change many lives in the process.

I love the concept of this book. It reminded me of a commercial I saw once about one person doing a kind deed for someone else and that person doing a kind deed for another person and so on and so forth. It snowballed and the kind deeds just kept spreading. It was called "Pay it Forward" and I have never forgotten it. I don't think I will ever forget this book either. One simple, but very significant, piece of paper with Psalm 23 written on it travels from Baltimore to Iraq to Turkey and Italy, weaving it's way back home to touch the very life it was intended for in the beginning. It heals hearts, lives and relationships. It helps a soldier in Iraq make peace with the death of a friend in battle. It helps a lonely old man move on after the death of his beloved wife. It helps a victim of abuse in Barcelona. One little piece if paper weaves together hearts and lives that will forever be changed. Each verse represents a different story of restoration, hope, courage and love. I have never seen Psalm 23 told in quite the same way and I was so encouraged by the stories of the people within this book. They found hope when there was none and the courage to make it through but, most importantly, they found their way to God. Whether they didn't believe in God at all or they had just lost Him somewhere along the way, they came to know Him in a whole new and powerful way. Betsy and Laurie usually write children's books and this is their very first adult fiction book. I think they hit a home run with The Shepherd's Song and I hope this isn't their only attempt to reach out to adult readers. I was enthralled and excited to keep reading to find out who was impacted next. I don't believe you can read this book and not be encouraged. I also don't believe you can read it and not have your faith strengthened. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves stories of faith.

Betsy Duffey & Laurie Myers' The Shepherd's Song is a beautiful story of faith inspired by the 23rd Psalm. Meant to help her son, Matt, find his way back to God, Kate McConnell's handwritten copy of the Psalm unexpectedly touches twelve different lives as it makes an incredible journey around the world.

Each chapter in The Shepherd's Song is about a different person who finds personal meaning from one verse from the Psalm. Beginning with Kate taking comfort in the line, "The Lord is My Shepherd", the story then moves to an employee at her dry cleaners finding her note and the next part of the Psalm, "I Shall Not Want" changing his life. He then passes the note along to someone else, thus beginning the wondrous voyage that will profoundly alter so many lives.

Kate's note travels from country to country, affecting a diverse set of individuals from different cultures and sometimes different religions. For some, the verses will help them find their way back to their lost faith. For others, it will begin their relationship with God for the first time. For another, it will help heal their sorrow. A young woman will find courage to begin a new life. One man will find his way back from the wrong path. But of course, the most compelling chapter brings the story full circle when the fate of Kate and her family is revealed.

The Shepherd's Song is a touching and sometimes poignant novel that is quite captivating. Betsy Duffey & Laurie Myers bring readers a quiet story of faith that packs a powerful message that will linger long after the last page has been turned.

***A story within stories of change and second chances***

The "Writing Sisters," Betsy Duffey and Laurie Myers, penned The Shepherd's Song, scheduled to release March 11th, around a prayer drenched Psalm from the Old Testament. It's an inspirational narrative of chance and change that "links lives and hearts with it's simple but beautiful message."

The story begins with Kate McConnell, a wife and mother who regains consciousness to hear the ambulance medic give a "critical assessment" of her vital signs to the emergency room doctors. In coming days newspapers would report Kate was part of the "worst traffic accident ever on I-95 between Washington D.C. and Baltimore," that involved "twenty-five cars, six semis and one bus."

Kate's last memory was "the sounds of breaking glass and crunching metal" then a "crushing pain in her chest and down her right leg" before she lost consciousness. When she came to in the ambulance she felt restraints on her wrists as blood pooled beneath her. The medic's calm transmission of vital signs made her wonder if she was going to die and she prayed, "Please, let my life count."

While the ambulance sped toward the hospital…Full Review: http://www.examiner.com/list/the-shep...

What a beautiful story.

From the first few pages my heart was captured by the message of this book.

Have you ever wondered if your life really makes a difference? I think we all have. This book will encourage you to believe that you are making a difference in ways and in people’s lives that you have never met or imagined.

You will follow one piece of paper as it makes it way across the world and see how God’s Word can transforms lives. I love how each chapter is really like a short story all by its self. But each chapter is connected by the Word of God. With each page turn I wondered how was the paper going to reach someone new and how would it touch their lives?

Everyone has a story, as I believe with all my heart, and this book shares the stories of broken individuals in need of hope and who find it in the best place possible, the Word of God.

If you enjoy stories that encourage, you will love A Shepherd’s Song.

A copy of this book was given to me by the authors in exchange for an honest review.

Get ready for an inspirational journey across the world with The Shepherd’s Song, a well-crafted novel that uses the 23rd Psalm, written on a slip of paper, to bring well-developed characters and readers close to the heart of God. Like me, you’ll want to keep this captivating book on your nightstand with your Bible. After you read it, you’ll pick it up again and again.

The prose is exceptional. The characters, believable. The plot, inspiring.

I love how Duffey and Myers use the 23rd Psalm to masterfully connect the characters across the globe.

Though the twelve stories are short, the Writing Sisters creatively and ingenuously draw the reader into the lives of seemingly real people. Their emotional journey becomes yours as you feel for them in their struggles and cheer them on when they grasp the love God expresses to them through the lines of the psalm.

The Shepherds Song is a great book to give as a gift or to use for a Bible study or book club discussion group. I can’t give it less than five stars!

I was lucky enough to have won this book through Goodreads. I really enjoyed it. It was well written and very interesting. I enjoyed it very much. It really made me think about small things that can make a huge difference. I would definitely recommend this book to other people. It was also incredibly easy to read and I managed to read it in one sitting.

There was not much about this book that I didn't like. Like I said, it was well written and interesting. The only negative aspect of the book was that there were quite a few times when there were three or four sentences written straight after each other and each sentence consisted of about four words. This slows the reader down because the sentences are staggered instead of flowing. I did read that the authors had written children's books before so I can only assume that this is where the influence might have come from. This is just a personal opinion of mine.

All in all, a very good book that I would definitely recommend.

A moving and gripping story of answered prayer…one step at a time.
Kate McConnell’s deepest wish is for her son to know the Lord. She prays over each verse of the Shepherd’s Song as she writes it then tucks the folded paper into his coat pocket. Following their argument and one of the worst wrecks ever on Maryland’s I-95, she utters one more prayer and slips into unconsciousness. But God is faithful. He hears her prayers and works wonders.
The Shepherd’s Song is a powerful tale of twelve lives touched by one woman, whether known or unknown, as well as those of her family. Verse by verse, whether it be guidance, protection, deliverance, or mere comfort, the scribbles they find on a piece of paper reveal what they need or want.
I give five stars for the Shepherd’s Song. Well-written, and poignant, this book will touch the heart of every reader.

i was lucky enough to win this book from a good reads draw, so thank you very much to the person who ran the draw. mine is copy number 16/100 so hopefully one day it will go around and be read by another good reads reader.
the shepherds song wasnt perhaps my usual choice of book but i really enjoyed it to the degree that i almost couldnt put it down. the lives of seemingly unconnected people are joined and touched by the 23rd psalm which was written and travelled around the world touching the lives of twelve different people and telling their stories before travelling full circle and coming back to the person it was originally written for.

my next challenge is to decide who to pass this book on to so it can be read by as many people as possible

This book is the first in a very long time that has made me stop reading halfway through because it was calling to me. By the end of chapter three I was in tears and struggling to keep reading on.

I have always known that alot of people feel moved by the psalms but have never heard about it. This book has allowed me to gain a new perspective on the way we look at the verses in the Bible, and has encouraged me to find a verse that means as much to me as the psalm did to the characters in this book.

Well done and thank you for such a great book. Now just have to finish the last couple of chapters and decide who to pass this wonderful book onto.

I received this book for free from Goodreads FirstReads.

To be honest I put off reading this novel because I wasn't sure what to expect. It's not a genre I normally read, but I must say it was wonderful.

Ms. Duffey and Ms. Myers take the twenty-third Psalm and transform it into something even more powerful and touching by the stories they tell. I warn you, you will cry -- some happy tears, some not so happy, but it was SO worth it.

I pray that I can touch the world for God half as much as Kate did. What a legacy.

***I received this book from the author/publisher for the purpose of review. The above is my honest opinion.***

With concern for her wayward son, Kate McConnell writes the words of Psalm 23, folds the sheet of paper, and tucks it into the jacket pocket of her son. When that same jacket goes to the drycleaners, Kate fails to empty its pockets. Thus begins a trip around the world of her note for her son, changing the lives of twelve people. Duffey and Myers write excellent variations of characters, settings, and cultures. For those who read this book, many times twelve lives will be changed for the better. If you like reading Andy Andrews, you’ll love this book!

This wonderful work of fiction is a collection of short stories, each titled with a line from the 23rd Psalm. The stories all connected. A mother of a college student writes the 23rd Psalm on piece of paper and puts it in his jacket. He leaves the paper in his jacket. Then the young man working at the dry cleaners takes it out and gives it to someone. Eventually the paper travels through many people and many miles. Questions are in the back to promote book discussions. The cover is very beautiful. My compliments to the designer!

Recommended for public libraries and book clubs.

This is a beautifully written story about the impact each of us makes on the world, and I would highly recommend to anyone! As a non-religious person I worried that I would be unable to relate to the book but, although religion and God are obviously a major focus, beyond that the book's message was strong enough to make it relatable of those of other / no faith. All of us can make a difference, and help others along the way.

I am going to start by saying, You never know who may touch, help or in reverse hinder someone even if it is just something you have written down on a piece of paper.

When the character, Kate McConnell wrote Psalm 23 on that paper she was only thinking of her son. God does work in ways that confound us all. And this story is a testimony

A well-worn slip of paper with the 23rd Psalm makes it's way around the world, miraculously touching lives forever. I love the way these 12 lives intersect with the verse. . .well crafted! Written by the "Writing Sisters" daughters of the well-loved Betsy Byars, children's book writer. Their goal is to write Scripturally inspired stories that touch lives, and they have done it!
