Is it wise to mix business with pleasure? Do workplace romances ever lead to anything? Maggie Pelham is about to find out.
Not having had much experience with men, Maggie has trouble understanding her new employer, Marcus Seymour. His cynical view of women and commitment brings out the worst in her. He is everything she most dislikes in a man. However, the more she's around him, the more difficult it becomes to maintain this attitude toward the attractive attorney. Marcus has another side to his personality - a side that Maggie can't ignore and can't stop herself from liking.
When Marcus suggests a "temporary" engagement, Maggie's real problems begin. In her role as his fiancé, Maggie is forced into a closer relationship with Marcus than she ever imagined. As the line between pretense and reality begins to blur, Maggie realizes she is in danger of falling for her boss - a man who seems to possess little regard for the devotion he so easily inspires.
I'm always on the lookout for a fun story and this one fit the bill. It was also a *clean* romance and I really appreciate that as a reader.
Maggie is a naive young lady with her head in the clouds. I so much prefer that to a cynical woman. She has a jealous streak, which made her a fun character--not perfect. I felt that Maggie was a real character because she had feelings about herself that a lot of women have--insecurity, not seeing herself as others see her, kind, loyal, etc. I wish she would have stood up for herself a little more, but it seems like a lot of women don't in real life.
Marcus is a big jerk at first. I thought he was so rude to treat Maggie the way he did and then steal a kiss. I thought, "What?! Who does he think he is?! What a cocky guy!!" However, I grew to like him the more I got to know him. I guess he's just one of those people who doesn't make a good first impression, but proves that things aren't always as they seem. One thing I noted about him--he seemed a lot older than Maggie and although he was, I think he seemed so because of the words he used. He came across as being very educated and...old.
I thought their relationship happened kind of suddenly, especially considering how he treated her, but once it started, it was a fun journey. I really liked the aspect of an engagement of convenience.
Content: clean!!
**I received a copy in exchange for a review and it in no way influenced my opinion**
I actually ended up enjoying this book more than I expected to. It's a bit ridiculous & unbelievable, but in a silly sort of way. Instead of being annoyed, as I often am by ridiculous stories, I was entertained. It was a rather nice, fast read. Not too deep or anything-- very light, really. Personally, I'd call it a fluffy read. But it was a good fluffy read. And CLEAN! No, it's not Christian fiction, but it definitely is clean. (I checked some reviews before diving in this time.)
A strong 3.5 stars on this one! I read it in about an hour so it was a quick read! Good if you are looking for something fun and fast! I liked so many things about this! There was only one main small thing that bugged me! I wanted for just one moment of the main girl Maggie to get scorching mad at Marcus. They did have some angry scenes but I want FIRE and HEAT!! He said some pretty sexist stuff so I just wanted her to be like, "O yeah?! This is WHAT I THINK OF YOU....ROAR!" (that's the best angry sentence I could come up with for the moment!) I think that's the fiery girl in me talking! (I'm not that fiery) True, she could have been fired but it would have been for womankind! :D Now the things I liked! First I loved the setting and the premise of the story! A girl working in a historical house she loves and having a boss who, while attractive, is a bit cranky and well...her boss. I am a sucker for love stories that start off with disdain and grow into something more! Makes for a good contemporary romance! If you are looking for a sweet romance then this is the book for you! It's squeaky clean with some parts that will make you smile! If our main man Marcus was broken down into percentages he'd be 10% brooding, misunderstood Mr. Darcy and 90% Henry Higgins from My Fair Lady. He's an ordinary man-but let a woman into his life and you invite eternal strife! haha He's a confirmed bachelor and doesn't think that highly of women. And Maggie is certainly an Eliza Dolittle just waiting for people, including Marcus and maybe even herself, to recognize her for her awesomeness! So give it a whirl! :)
*An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review
Marcus the hero in this one reminded me a lot of Henry Higgins of Pygmalion & My Fair Lady at first, and I wanted to have the heroine Maggie yell at him with more of a passion that she seemed to keep contained and smack the condescension off his face.
During the fake engagement though he became more like a misunderstood Mr. Darcy of Pride and Prejudice with Maggie being like Belle of Beauty and the Beast that transforms the seemly Beast.
The heroine Maggie definitely was no Eliza or Elizabeth from the respective first two works referenced above. She was more like the heroine from Rebecca with her insecurities, jealousies, and not seeing the value people saw in her loyalty, kindness, authenticity and naivete innocence. Those positive traits made you cheer for Maggie and affected the hero in a way that no other women seemed to do for him.
This was a sweet love story about Maggie falling in love with her boss Marcus. Maggie worked at the Bradford house as a tour guide. It was a beautiful historical mansion. The owners of the mansion was changing hands. Maggie expected the new owner to be a old guy with gray hair. She was shocked to find Marcus was young and very attractive. The previous owners did not reside in the mansion. After Marcus bought the mansion he also moved him. Maggie always seemed to bump into him, not expecting him to be there. Marcus was a confirmed bachelor, never intending to settle down. Can Maggie be the one to change his mind and his heart on the subject of marriage?
I found the pace of this book to be slow. The plot was good. I also agree with other reviews. This was a very clean book. There is no sex. The couple did share a few kisses. The journey they shared was slow and sweet. This book had very little drama.
Erica Matthews is a new writer for me. I found her on Amazon. When I read the blurb about the book, I thought it would be cute and flirty and interesting. It wasn't. The premise reminded me of the Harrison Ford/Julia Ormond movie "Sabrina." Maggie, the heroine, is very quirky and fresh and not jaded with the world. She brings a new perspective to Marcus: she's younger than he usually dates, she's naive, she has a pure heart, and she doesn't play flirty games. He's intrigued.
Definitely a clean read. It was like reading an old Beverly Cleary book like *Ellen and Otis* or *Sister of the Bride* that was written for eighth graders.
I liked the idea of the plot, but i didn't get it! Why did Marcus and Maggie have to have a fake engagement, he never comes out and gives an definite answer! that's the plot!! Also the POV jumps form person to person, too much and with no reason. At times I had to start a paragraph over to understand whos POV i was with. Seriously
All in all this was a very poorly written book, luckily it was short. It honestly had some cute nice moments and it had real potential but the writing just killed this one for me. I'll definitely give her another try, maybe she was having a bad day!
I felt that the first few chapters of this book were written in modern day point of view, but as it continues you get the impression that you are in the 30's. The way the characters speak and interact is so unrealistic for modern times that a different era was the only logical explanation, but then someone's cell phone rings and you are back to the twenty first century. Major events happened too quickly while minor happenings drug by. It was a good premise that just fell short.
I don't think I have read a book like this one. Most books similar to this read as the woman in denial of love and going back and forth or the man doing it. It book has a depth to that keeps you intrigued and wandering how it is going to go forward from one chapter to the next. The heroine and is so young and innocent by wise beyond her years. I have to say this is one book I will read again and not find it boring the second or third of them time through.
I enjoyed this one. It had sort of a Beauty & the Beast feel to it. While I wanted to finish it it didn't push me to pry my eyes open at night reading it. As I thought about it I realized what was lacking for me was the passion between the two...But overall enjoyable and entertaining.
I found this sweet romance book very enjoyable, a bit predictable but still enough to hold my interest to see what was going to happen next. As so many books I've been reading have left me wanting to know more of the story, it was nice to read a stand alone book with a wrapped up nicely ending that left me totally satisfied.
it actually took me two hours to finish it, because I just kept hoping that something dramatic or just exciting would happen...but it never really did. well. I liked the heroin though. she was strong but still innocent and sweet. well.. the end was also a little but dissapointing but... well it was alright. cute. nice for a distraction.
This was a great story. Sweet and clean. I loved the storyline. The settings described by the author sound beautiful. I was laughing at Marcus at times when he would question himself about what he was feeling. I look forward to checking out more books by this author.
This is a clean romance, however I found it boring. I did not feel the male character was very attractive at all. He seemed cold, Moody and rude. Not someone anyone would fall in love with.
I really enjoyed this clean/sweet romance. It's been awhile since I've read a book that I couldn't put down!! Or even one that I've considered giving 5 stars. This is a definite 5 star!!
This was a cute romantic story. It was clean and a very innocent view of love. The writing was not spectacular and the storyline was very simple and predictable but it was also uncomplicated and just very sweet to read.
I enjoyed this light reading about a man who buys a historic house and meets the tour guide. They are sarcastic toward each other and he tries to fight his attraction to her.
This book is truly an open love letter to everyone who has been lucky to find that one special someone to share their life with.I recommend this book to everyone that wants to go on a romantic journey.
I really enjoyed this quick and easy read, the characters were funny and interesting, I loved the banter between the two main characters. Great book quick read.
I never can resist a good forced marriage story. This one, though, I just couldn't get into very well. The romance between the two characters seemed completely unbelievable.
3.5 stars... It was clean (very clean), well-written, well-development book. Sometimes I roll my eyes because of too classical or even comic scenes. But again, it was not bad.
