Basic Plot: Huff and Puff are train engines that want to try something new.
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. The art was really colorful and well done. It wasn't particularly detailed, but there was a quality there that I didn't expect from a free Nook book. The writing was typical of beginning reader books, with lots of repetition and simple words, so it was ok, if nothing particularly fantastic. Honestly, my only issue is with the story itself. There are twqo train engines, one rear and one front, and they each decide they don't like their jobs so they want to switch. They both decide the new job is hard, so they decide that they should each GO BACK TO THEIR PLACE WHERE THEY BELONG. I wouldn't mind if the message were about appreciating other people and their jobs, but something about the "go back to where I belong" bit bugged me on a very fundamental level.
My son is loving train books right now so we gave this one a read. I like that it rhymes but that is about it. He listens to the whole book but isn’t really excited about it.
Huff and Puff are loved by my preschool storytime kids. When they see that we're going to read a Huff and Puff book, they get excited and there are shouts of "I've read that book!" & "I know about Huff and Puff!" Huff is the locomotive and Puff is the caboose and they have adventures. There are a series of these books about Huff and Puff if you're interested in finding out more about them. These are easy reader books and good for kids who are learning to read or who just like trains (and who doesn't?).
This is a very nice beginning reading book for young readers-listeners. Huff is the engine and Puff is the caboose. They get tired of pushing and pulling so they decide to switch places. They both realize they like their places just as much and are appreciative of it. Very cute illustrations as well, very pleasing to the eyes.
My son absolutely love this book. Great starting point for young readers. The story is simple enough for youngsters to understand and read at the same time.
