Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Charlie the Ranch Dog , is back with a new I Can Read story featuring our favorite bacon-loving basset hound. Charlie the Ranch Dog may have met his match in Mr. Rabbit, a sneaky ranch animal that steals from Mama's garden. Charlie tries to think up ways to stop the rabbit from eating up all the yummy carrots, but Mr. Rabbit always seems to be one step ahead! Charlie's New Friend is a Level One I Can Read book, which means it's perfect for children learning to sound out words and sentences. With expressive illustrations by acclaimed artist Diane deGroat and Charlie's hilarious antics, this I Can Read story will become a favorite of parents and beginning readers.
Ree Drummond began blogging in 2006 and has built an award-winning website, where she shares recipes, showcases her photography, and documents her hilarious transition from city life to ranch wife. She is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling cookbook The Pioneer Woman Cooks. Ree lives on a working cattle ranch near Pawhuska, Oklahoma, with her husband, Ladd; their four kids; their beloved basset hound; and lots of other animals.
Neo took the lead on this one, bring us back into the life of Charlie the Ranch Dog. When Charlie is hungry for some food, he goes to find Mama out in the garden. Little does he know, but there is a rabbit trying to steal carrots, which will surely upset Mama. Charlie crafts a plan to trap the rabbit, but that little animal is a sneaky one. With a wiggle of its nose, the rabbit stares at Charlie and waits to score another carrot. By the end, Charlie has made peace with the rabbit and all seem happy. Neo liked the story, though struggled at times. I'm seeing a strong determination, which will be fruitful before too long.
The plot and inner emotions were not as spot on as in the previous books. I mean why go from normal doggy chasing behavior to oh I am gonna take you a carrot? It was a complete sore for me I wasn't pleased at all with it. It seemed muddled. Anyway my son liked the pics and likes to hear it so I give it a 3
Ree Drummond fans may enjoy the many ranch references in this installment of Charlie's series. The rabbit that Charlie befriends, however, has no personality - even when he's bounding off a sleeping Charlie's head there's no humor to it, and the story in general feels tired and lackluster. Charlie and his Mama are great, but they deserve a more original adventure than this - something with a little more personality for the bacon-eating ranch dog.
The story is fine, but I think the majority of beginning readers will not be able to read this one on their own. I would say it is for children who can already read basic sight words and a bit more. The story has five to eight sentences per spread. The illustrations are the same as with other Charlie the Ranch Dog books so look for the chipmunk.
Another great kid's story from Ree Drummond. I love Charlie the Ranch Dog and my kids do too. Cute story, gorgeous illustrations....the whole package. Perfect for kids of all ages.

I thought that this was an ok book for beginner readers. There have been other Charlie and the Ranch Dog books that I thought were cuter, but this was ok just as well. This is also an AR book for anyone who might want to know.
Cute story about Charlie chasing the rabbit out of the garden. Then he decides to befriend the rabbit, and after several attempts, succeeds. Charlie is a good dog.
It's kind of inane. I'm not that impressed by the storyline. The pictures are cute, but not that interesting. It's more words than it needs to be to tell a really basic story, and it doesn't say anything. The story doesn't have a point to it.
Charlie wakes up and sees a rabbit stealing carrots from the ranch. He chases the rabbit, then tries to lure the rabbit with a carrot. Then he offers to share the carrot with the rabbit in exchange for the rabbit not taking things without asking, but when he eats some of the carrot he decides he doesn't like carrots and prefers bacon. The end.
This is a "Beginning 1 Reading" book meaning it has simple sentences for eager new readers. When I think of "early reader" books I think of a short story with basic words. This book seemed more advanced to me. It was pretty long for a "new reader".
Excerpt from the book: Bam! A bright light hits my face. I cover my eyes with my floppy ears. Oh. It's just the sun. Wait. What? The sun! Yesterday was cold and rainy. So was the day before. I didn't get any ranch work done! Today will be extra busy.
This is a beginning reading book so maybe easy for a beginning reader to read. Several words are repetitive so once they learn it they can repeat it throughout the story.
Charlie finds a rabbit 'stealing' carrots out of his mama's garden. He chases it and tries to stop it. But then he decides to leave a carrot for him. And then next morning he has made a friend.
My kids got this book from the school library and they love it. we have a dog named Charlie and my mom has a basset hound so they were all over this book
The I Can Read series of Charlie the Ranch Dog are cute, but Charlie's voice didn't translate into the simplified reading so they aren't as nice to read aloud to our girls as the picture books.
