Beware of Love in Technicolor

Rate this book
Greer Bennett sees college as her chance to break free from the shy, slightly chubby and socially awkward high school girl she once was. Her chance to start off on that one-of-a-kind life she knows is out there waiting for her. Can fate be held guilty for introducing her to John Cunningham the first night at school? Maybe, contrary to what Einstein once ventured, gravity should be held responsible for two people falling in love.

Now in her first real relationship, Greer is getting used to the sex thing, but unfortunately, the Big O remains elusive. John’s ex-girlfriend, however, does not. It seems she is always lurking somewhere in the background of his life. Greer assumes she is behind every forgotten phone call, every petty fight, every blown-off night Greer and John were supposed to spend together. And once in a while, her suspicions are confirmed.

Set against the backdrop of the nineties, and steeped in pop culture, Beware of Love in Technicolor is in no way your typical Romance. Sex, drugs, drinking, partying: Greer’s new world is full of temptations and new experiences. Will Greer ever figure out, exactly, what an orgasm is supposed to feel like? Will John’s ex-girlfriend ever just disappear? And in the aftermath of the breakup, will Greer be open to the one person left holding the pieces of her heart?

This book is not your typical New Adult Romance. It wasn't the mad chemistry, alpha male tales I've been use to. It was the twisted maze of love and friendship and growth that is true to the college experience. And the inevitable let down when none of it is what you had expected.

And it was set in 1991- so it made me kinda nostalgic.

It's the story of Greer's first two years in college. She was looking forward to all the firsts she was going to experience, but, as usual in life, it didn't live up to the hype. Her first day she meets an insanely hot guy.. but it's his friend she somehow falls in love with.

What's crazy is that none of the characters have some damaged past... (or at least it's not mentioned in the story)

At first I didn't like Greer. I thought she was stuck up and judgmental, but as her college years progress she loosens up, and I realized that she was just a sheltered, 19 year old, who thought she knew. Her growth wasn't always positive, but it was typical. She experimented with drugs, with friendships, guys, and with her diet. All a typical experiences for a college student. (well maybe not typical, but believable)

The writing was excellent. I loved the style. It all just worked for me!

There were some typos, but that sort of thing doesn't bother me too much. Really the only other negative thing I have is the ending was a little sudden, but it's easy to imagine where it's going.

I don't know really what more to say except if you want to take a break from the hype of over dramatized life, this book is perfect.

Overall it left me feeling like I had just got done reminiscing with my friend about our adolescents. And I loved looking back.

This book was such a pleasant surprise. I truly enjoyed the writing and the story.

I think this story really struck a chord with me partially because I graduated from college in 1990. I listened to the Cure, the Smiths, the Clash, and Depeche Mode. I also had my own John. He wasn’t the hot punk rocker John Cunningham was, but he was a Marine with a motorcycle. My college experience was actually pretty different from Greer. But something’s are almost universal like the freedom of college and living on your own, the new and old friends, all of the firsts, and so many fears. So many memories came to me as I read this. I actually cried a little as I finished it, thinking about the girl I was then. Thank you to the author for writing such a beautiful, real story.

I loved the ending and I look forward to more of Greer’s story.

One line that really stayed with me was, “I wish I could sit down on that Laura Ashley eyesore, across from that poor, confused girl, and tell her not to waste her time. Tell her to put him out of her head and out of her heart before it is too late. I wouldn’t have listened to my older self.” Whether you are younger than me or older, that sentiment is one a lot of us can appreciate. I highly recommend you give this book a chance.

Greer Bennett wants college to be a fresh starts for her. Having been a bit of a chubby, overlooked girl in high school, she sees it as an opportunity to be a whole new person. After meeting John Cunningham, her straight edge, naive out look on like is thrown for a loop.

There is a lot needed to be said about this book. I wanted to like this book more than I can actually say, and I read all the way through hoping it out get better, which it didn't. I kept waiting for something to actually happen , I don't know how to explain that. I mean, the book seemed to be written as an attempt at one of those Friday night teen dramas that used to air on Fox or something, but it didn't work in the book setting. Perhaps with the right background music and pretty actors, this story, exactly as it is, would have worked. It felt like an attempt to cross Freaks and Geeks and Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist , and it didn't succeed. A big part of what drew me into the book was the mention of pop culture in the synopsis. A few mentions of popular books and movies, and a few musical artist doesn't really hit the "pop culture" nail on the head.

Greer, as a character, was completely unlikable to me. She was overly shallow and skanky. I mean, the whole book was laced with her essentially being attached to John and making out with other guys, plus, she would get mad at him for even getting a phone call from his ex-girlfriend. I mean, that is a bad thing, but her guilt over the situations she got herself into was almost non existent. I get that when you're in college you want to explore the world and yourself and, you know, the whole self-discovery thing, but you don't get attached to someone right off the bat if you want to do that. Plus her attitude towards her dorm mate, Molly, was completely unnecessary. She would refer to Molly as a "nightmare" and a bad roommate, but it really sounded like Greer was in need of a reality check. The dorm mate didn't do a damn thing to anybody.

There was a big emphasis made on the dorm mate at the beginning and she was mentioned her and there, but I felt like with the lack of the dorm mate in the actually bulk of the story, it wasn't worth building up who she was, or really even having scenes with her. She felt more like a filler than anything else.

The relationship between John and Greer was forced, at best. It wasn't believable in the slightest. Yes, she thinks he's "cute" but they had so little in common. I understand that he was her first boyfriend but the back and forth, the mistrust, and all of that seemed more like something to fill 200 pages than to make an actual story. This is where the feeling of Freaks and Geeks comes in. It felt like the author was attempting for a very "Lindsay and Nick" type of relationship, but it fell flat.

The other side of that is Greer's inability to have an orgasm, a la Nick and Norah . While every woman experiences this at some point, and it is mentioned in the blurb, it didn't make sense. I mean, not in the way Greer handled it. There was a big to-do about it after her and John's first time, but then it was a forced mention through out the story.

The editing and formatting issues were the icing on the cake. As a self-published author, I understand that it's hard to find someone to help you edit, or beta read, but friends could have gotten involved or something. Heck reading back to yourself helps a lot. There a free formatting programs out there as well. I don't like leaning on "oh they're self published" as an excuse to not take the time with your book that it needs. I did that, and my book suffered, so I recently had to re-release my book because it was just bad. So I don't think that any self-published author should let their book lack in the editing and formatting department. We have to work 10 times harder to make a book readable and well put together because we do it all ourselves.

All in all, I picked up this book because I wanted to read it, but I was extremely disappointed.

"I'm tired of watching other people get what I want," I told him, pushing the hair out of his eyes. "I spent four years in high school wishing I was someone else. I don't want another four years like that."

I struggled with this book. I enjoyed the author's writing style. I did not, however, enjoy the characters. Greer was immature and insecure, even for a college freshman. It took a long time for me to come around to appreciate her. I detested John from the minute he was introduced. I don't feel as though the author gave us anything to actually like about him. He just came off like a total jerk. (In hindsight, he may or may not have reminded me of one of my own ex-boyfriends and I may be projecting.) Ben was intriguing, but I wanted more of him. I absolutely adored Topher and wish he had played a bigger role in the book.

What I really enjoyed about this book is that I feel the author did a fantastic job of depicting the college experience. It was absolutely realistic. It was a good coming-of-age story. I've never read a book quite like it before. While I didn't particularly like Greer, I wanted to know what she would experience next and where she would end up. The writing and the plot kept me intrigued and i found myself unable to put the book down until I read it in its entirety.

"Taking you seriously is about as safe as playing Russian roulette," I told him. "I never know, each time I see you, whether or not my heart will end up splattered on the wall."

I was never able to get behind Greer and John as a couple. They didn't make sense to me. I didn't see the connection, nor did I feel the chemistry. I never actually believed they belonged together and I definitely did not find myself cheering for them as the story went on. John came off as totally sketchy and untrustworthy. While I never found that I truly came to like Greer, I did come to understand her and sympathize with her in the end. I wanted her to find herself and to be happy.

This book had a grittier, more "real" feel to it than a lot of the new adult titles I typically read. I appreciated that. While other books come off as somewhat fluffy at times, this one didn't. I was never able to fully predict what would happen next and I appreciated that it kept me guessing. I'll definitely be on the lookout for more books from this author in the future.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I got this book on Amazon when it was free a few days ago. Sometimes free books are never that good, but this one was okay.

This was an interesting novel, it's set in the 1990s and it makes a few references to the time period. Greer is a freshy who was a little sheltered. Her first days on a college campus is not too fun. She gets stuck in a sucky dorm, community showers and phone, gets a nice puke waterfall, and a country roommate who thinks she is more cool than she actually is. Through her Texas roomie Greer meets John, a rebel without a cause and no emotions. She finds his leather jacket, boots, and music T attractive. What she does not find attractive is his exgirlfriend who keeps making appearances at the wrong time.

Greer and John finally get past the ex, but there is one sexual thing she cannot get. This causes stress and strain on the relationship. When John moves off campus to Cloud 9 Greer expects the relationship to feel like it is on Cloud 9 but it is far far from it. They still are stuck in this sexual barrier, and John is not the sweetest of boyfriends with his distanced behavior. Some things are worth the fight, but when you're the only one fighting is there really a reason?

This is a really fun tale about a girl and her best guy friends. The novel follows Greer through her sophomore year in college and her growth and progression.

Probably I give this book 3.5 stars. I liked it a lot, but I sorta felt like it didn't go anywhere. I know I am supposed to focus on Greer's personal progress and how she grew throughout the book, but even knowing that, I just needed a little more. I do not know what, but I felt like something was missing. I did appreciate what I read of Greer's story-I think I just want there to be a little more to the story...not sure. But, I did like it. I totally remember going off to college and feeling similar uncertainties about life and my future, so I definitely related to that part of the story. And like experimenting with new things whether it be sex, drugs, new perspectives on life, associating with new people: that is so relatable; everyone goes through that at some point. I, like Greer, went to college and became more open-minded about things (even if I thought I was open-minded going into college, way more accepting of others and their differences coming out of college). I wanted to punch John in the face sometimes in this book because sometimes guys (/people) can be real jerks and selfish and he clearly didn't care when he was hurting Greer. I enjoyed Greer's friendship with Topher. Everyone needs that one super reliable friend who just gets you and they were that for each other. Basically, I loved the characters and the way they interacted; I think it the relationships in this book are very realistic. And I also really liked the plot, but I needed it to go a little further, to give me a little more concrete resolution, but maybe that is just me. Overall I really did enjoy this book. I gave it 3 stars to represent 3.5, but I am changing it to 4 now because I really did like the book. Character growth is a great thing, but plot-wise I wanted a bit more.

We meet Greer fresh out of high school. She chooses to live with a roommate from Texas because many students from her previous school attend her college. Through her roommate Greer meets John a 1990s grunge guy. John apparently is broken up with his high school girlfriend but typically ex’s don’t spend the night, come for visits or keep popping up, This causes a strain from Greer and John’s relationship. Pesky exs are the only thing, for some reason Greer can’t reach her Big O! Along the way Greer gains some friends you wish she’d choose over her boyfriend and some decisions you wish she never came across.

I love how we get to see Greer’s character progression. We meet her as a college freshman who judges and does not want to be around John’s party life to exploring that side with him. It gives a real college feel about meeting that one person who later moves on to be something big, or the first roommate you promise to stay in touch with but in reality you two never speak after the last day of school. We also see how high school friendships are tested and if they really last forever.

I wanted to read this book so badly because I thought the name sounded really cool and I love any time period books from the 80s and 90s. This was no exception, this was a very well written enjoyable novel.

This is the story of Greer. A new college freshman who is looking to break away from the shy, invisible existence she had in high school and have new adventures, new living experiences and new friends. It doesn’t start well for her when she gets thrown up on while moving into the dorm and discovers that her decision to room with a girl from out of state may not have been the best one. On her very first day, she meets John. She isn’t sure what to think of him, but she is sure he is going to have an impact on her life.

This is a sweet and funny coming of age story told from future Greer’s point of view. It takes place from the time she is a freshman until she is a junior. This is a fun trip back to the 90’s and a great debut for this author, very well written.

My thoughts:
Character development: 5
Level of Romance between characters: 3.5
Passion/Heat level: 1 (little mention of “the big O” but other than that the sex scenes are non-existent)
Angst/Heartbreak: 3 (some drama but not too much)

Overall, this was not what I was expecting but I still enjoyed it. I thought I knew how it would end but I was wrong, pleasantly surprised. And, it is free on Amazon for a couple of days so go forth and read!

This was a free kindle book that I found out about on Goodreads, and I'm giving my honest review of it.

I kind liked this book, but wasn't overly enthusiastic about it. I found it somewhat lacking, and somewhat boring. I kept waiting for it to kick in and start to get interesting... At 72% through I almost quit reading it altogether, but I hate to give up on a book when I'm that far into it. I just wanted more from it. I wanted it to get better. I felt the main character (Greer) was kind of mean and stuck up. I wanted to like her more you know... She was very detached from her feelings/emotions, and when I read a romance, I want to know more about a character, I want to have feelings for the character, not feel mono-tone (nothing really strong or going on about the characters). When I read a romance novel, I want drama, an escape from the normal everyday life. I guess I don't want to read about young people drinking and smoking pot, and which dorm they are going to live in. I felt the characters were very artificial.
The ending started to get better, and that was why I give it 2.5 stars instead of 2.

****I received a free copy of this book from the author and promised to review it honestly.****

Greer Bennett is a freshman in college in 1990. She has a roommate from Texas whom she tolerates but doesn't really like to hang out with her. She made a friend Topher before classes started and they have the same passion for old movies and they throw classic quotes at one another to see if they can stump the other.
Greer starts dating John and decides its time to give up her V card but no matter what they do she cannot have the big O. Is it because John's ex-girlfriend Abby keeps popping up?

This was a great read and I cannot wait for the second book to come out! I really enjoyed the way it was written. Instead of it being set in 1990 the author decided to write it as a reflective story. It was as if she was an older woman telling you the story of her college years. Her loves, her struggles, etc. Really well done.

I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family.

I would actually rate this book 3.5 stars.

This book was very interesting. It's all about Greer and her college experiance (set in the early 90's). So needless to say there were a lot of firsts in this book. First love, first time away from home, first time living with someone other than family, first exploration into drugs and alcohol. With that said; there were parts of the book I really loved (all of the 90's references; TJ Maxx, Urkel, Polo's, CD players, and list just goes on) and parts of the book I did not like. Also somewhere in the middle of the book I really felt like the story slowed down (too much for my liking) a lot. Nothing was really going on in the story. But I guess if I really look at it the same can be true about life. And this story was all about Greer and her life. Exciting stuff does not happen all the time and after you've tried all of your "firsts" things can become old pretty quickly.

After starting this book I quickly decided how I wanted it to end. Luckily for my family, it did, otherwise they would have had to put up with a very grumpy me!

I'm not going to lie, I hated John from the start. I really wanted to slap him, a lot. I also wanted to slap Greer (love the name!) at points too (I'm not normally this violent, promise!) when she put up with some the crap she was put through.

It was a good read, I carried on reading it, not because I really really wanted to finish it, but more like because I wanted to make sure Greer made the right decision (in my opinion) by the end of the book. Nevertheless I did enjoyed it, it was an easy, no nonsense book, just lacking a slight bit of EPICness.

Received from author for an honest review.

This book had a lot of potential, but I couldn't get into it. It has a slow, confusing beginning and when you thought it was going to really get going, it didn't for me. Their were a lot of the worlds missing letters and characters were not well built up. Towards the end it does get interesting with Greer trying to figure out her love life and finally figuring out what she had been looking for was right in front of her which was her best friend Topher, who finally gives her the big O that she couldn't get with her 2 year boyfriend, John.

Like I said I think it has good potential, but it did not do it for me.

I liked the perspective of this book. Greer was looking back at her college experience and first love. It was neat to read this way, and have her point out her mistakes that she'd made along the way.

John, the boyfriend, annoyed me to no end. I didn't trust him, and didn't think Greer should have either. He just seemed very shady at times, but that wasn't explored.

The ended seemed very abrupt, and I hope there's a follow-up or something. It just felt as if something was missing. Maybe like too much was explored freshman year, and the rest was a little rushed.

I think this was a really good retelling of the first two years of college. We saw Greer navigate through the fears and excitement that we all have when we first went away to school: making friends, skipping classes, meeting boys, freshman 15, etc. We see her relationship with John as her first real relationship and how to survive it while also attending school and having fun.

There wasn't anything exciting about this story; I didn't hold my breath to turn the page. But I did really like how it brought me back to my college experience and relive it along with Greer.

I was given this book for an honest review

At first I really didn't like this book, it took me a while to get into it. There were times when I wanted to put it down and say forget it, but as I kept reading I got into the story and I could relate with Greer more as the story went on because I understood the things that she was going through. She was coming into herself and realizing a lot of things. She went through her ups and downs and not really understanding what anything really meant. I look forward to the next experience in Greer's life and she what happens to her.

This was a good book. There was so much potential but it fell a little flat for me. I had a hard time getting into the story at first. There were several words that were missing letters. I did enjoy Greer and especially Topher. I never really cared for John. He didn't seem very genuine about his feelings for Greer. I'm happy Greer was finally able to reach the big "O". I'm interested to see where Greer & Topher's relationship will go in the future.
