This book is really different to what we are used to from a Horus Heresy series. Its a collection of six scripts based on audio dramas that Games Workshop released in support of the Horus Heresy series. For those not familiar with audio dramas, they have been described as 'Prose with sound effects', 'movies without pictures', radio plays with narration'. While all these are partly true, they don't seem to hit the nail on the head. Audio dramas are all these but so much more. I really enjoyed the novelty of being able to read this book, as the stories do stand out on their own, however I imagine they would be so much better as an audio drama. It was nice to see the stories progress and I'm looking forward to book 2.

While I really enjoy the Warhammer novels, I have one major gripe. The publisher, Black Library, has a tendency to release a lot of the stories in formats that do not interest me. The biggest one is audio dramas, it's just not a way I like to consume the material. This book, which contains the scripts for 6 of the audio dramas is better than nothing.
I say that because they are literally just the scripts, they include things like directions for sound effects. It would be better if the stories were rewritten in a prose format. In fact, the first 3 scripts, "The Dark King", "The Lightning Tower", and "Raven's Flight", actually were, and are part of the Shadows of Treachery anthology. The other three, "Garro: Oath of Moment", "Garro: Legion of One", and "Butcher's Nails", I had not seen anywhere else. All 6 stories were great, and really add a lot to the Horus Heresy series. "Butcher's Nails" actually acts a prequel for the novel "Betrayer" and is worth reading prior.

Audio books and audio dramas are not really for me, so I was really excited when these scripts were released. They essentially read like short stories with stage directions and effects notation. The stories range from good to great, no real losers in the bunch, but Butcher's Nails and Garro: Legion of One were the best.
