A new adult romance featuring a hot alpha hero and a shot of adrenalin. This novella has everything you want for a quick read: no filler, all action, intrigue and steamy scenes.
Lucy Cortez is a model college student. She makes good grades, attends her study groups regularly and stays out of trouble in school.
Nathan Stark is the new hotshot star of their college’s lacrosse team. He is over six-feet of lethal charm and his sapphire blue eyes can make any girl swoon.
They meet cute and fall for each other. They live happily ever after, right?
Wrong. Beneath the fire of their passion lurks a tangle of lies and deceit. Was theirs a chance encounter or a premeditated meeting? For Nathan isn’t exactly who he says he is and Lucy herself is full of secrets—dangerous secrets.
Unless they trust each other with the truth of who they are, the fragile bond of young love may be broken and lives hanging in the balance may be shattered forever.
Victoria Paige writes smart, edgy, seductive romance.
Her heroes are badass alpha males and her smart, strong-willed heroines can hold their own against a bossy hero. Her books are sexually explicit and may contain dark themes, morally ambiguous choices, and disturbing situations as she injects realism into her stories and gives them her own twist.
Victoria lives in Richmond, Virginia with her husband and playful German Shepherd Dog, Loki.
Beneath the Fire by Victoria Paige is a novella, this is not a stand-alone novella. You have to read the first book in the Guardians series otherwise you'll have no blinking clue what's going on. This is not Maia and Jack's story it's about one of the other guardians in Maia's team, a rookie. One, Nathan Stark and his assignment, Lucy Cortez.
Here's the first book:
Nathan Stark, is a rich player slash underground fighter turned secret agent for a private security firm. His first undercover assignment is to get close to college student, Lucy Cortez, daughter to Francisco Cortez, a pleasure slave trader in Mexico. The rules are plain an simple, never get emotionally attached to your work. But you can't help who you love, or how much you love them. Nathan is determined to protect Lucy at all costs and when her life is endangered, he doesn't care what the agency says, he'll do whatever it takes to get Lucy out alive.
Everything that he was, his existence was reduced to the girl lying in his arms. He did not give a fuck that she made him weak, for when it came to Lucy, she could bring him to his knees and he wouldn't care. But he would kill for her, because no one could touch and hurt what was his and get away with it.
Lucy Cortez, is a straight A college student. She also has something she's keeping from Nathan. Don't worry just because Lucy is young doesn't been she's ditzy, she had her own version of kickassery.
There is action, suspense and some really hot and steamy moments in this book! My only complaint is that it was way too short, this book had the potential to be a full length novel, I wanted a lot more. But it was still enjoyable!
"What are you doing?" "We'll be quick," Nathan said tersely. "What?" Nathan pushed the back of the drivers seat forward and bundled Lucy into the backseat, immediately following her and pulling the door shut behind him." "You need to be fucked hard." "Are you insane we're on the side of the road!
If you're in the mood for a nice, quick, entertaining read, with an OTT young Alpha in the mix; then I would look here..
This one isn't one with a lot of depth. But what is on the page is pretty straight forward. To the point. Intense and hilarious at times with plenty of emotion and a little bit of sexiness thrown in.
I wasn't completely sold on the love connection with Nathan and Lucy, something was just missing for me with them. But I love them as individuals and some of the things that occur around them is what held my interest. So on that alone, I would recommend this read.
Well how nice was it to finally read a book where the female lead was as badass as the male lead! Lucy is the daughter of the head of a Mexican cartel. Along with her brother and best friend they plan to go against their father in a covert mission to remove kidnapped girls being sold as sex slaves, from his heavily guarded home in Mexico. Lucy now lives in America living, on the surface, the all American dream, but there is so much more to this girl than that, i dnt need to do a synopsis on her, you just need to read the book to find out who she is, you won't be disappointed! Nathan is the hot lacrosse player who has somehow worked his way into her life. How can she tell him what she's doing? How can she tell him who she is? Does she have to or does he already know? Is Nathan asking himself those same questions? And with all these questions and lies floating around how can they have fallen in love with each other? All I could do was fly through the pages to find out what would happen when the you know what would hit the fan, cos you just knew it was going to! Guns, get away cars, motorcycle thugs, corrupt police, dangerous dads, undercover government agencies (to name but a few) are not the norm in romance novels, but that's what sets this book apart. 2 strong lead characters, great friends, secrecy and lies and good ole sexual chemistry made this book into a real page turner. I can't wait to read more in this series!
*Got an advance copy from the author for an honest review.*
"You have to choose what you could live with and what you couldn't live without."
This books is a refreshing change from all the sappy, don't-know-my-feelings, holding-grudges-couple that I've read. Lucy and Nathan know what they want and they go and get it. They're both strong willed and cannot be more perfect for each other.
I enjoyed reading this book. It's a page turner!
Nathan is hawt! Uber alpha male!
"...she damned well better have this ring on her finger before she left this bed or she would find herself chained to it."
Lucy is smart and a well put together girl. She is not scare to butt heads with Nathan or her brother.
"...it's a reminder of how far we have come."
I would highly recommend this book to those who wants a quick read with substance and is not iffy with possessive, hot, alpha and a hot, go-getter heroine.
So glad I made it back to this series. Victoria Page knows exactly how to write my Hero's ..dominant, possessive and just down right Alpha. I loved Nathan and I also adore how her heroines are kick freaking ass. They might have met under deception but their love couldn't be denied. Passionate love scenes that took my breath away and amazing action from shoot outs to car chases and motorcycle gangs made this a page turning Sizzling Thriller.

I absolutely love this book, Beneath the fire is a wonderful story with a strong heroine and a hot, bossy, jealous, and extremely possessive alpha male. The story was well written, it kept me turning the pages until the end.
Since, I read her first book Fire and Ice, I became a huge fan of Victoria Page, I absolutely enjoy her books and of course her delicious possessive alpha men. I can't wait to read Silver Fire and I hope to read more about this amazing characters in up-coming books.
This is a wonderful short story filled with action, romance, drama, and a little bit of suspense. I totally loved this book!
It's about Lucy who is a college student with a father who is doing some really horrible things. She's out to try to make him stop, and help the people he's hurting. She has her brother, and her best friend helping her.
But little does she know her new boyfriend Nathan also has some secrets he's keeping from her, and they may have a whole lot more in common than they think.
I highly recommend this book. It is a short read, but really worth it.
Copy received from author for an honest review.........
Well what can I say that was awesome, one mighty fine possessive, alpha male and a strong female lead.
I thought it is written really well and had me on the edge of my seat, I just couldn't put the book down it was such an easy read too which is great. This story had a great mix of hotness, thriller, and romance! I would defiantly recommend this book to my friends and will defiantly be reading more works from this author.
I received an arc in exchange for an honest review....
This is a short novella, action filled, with steamy sex scenes and a hot, possessive guy in it. It has everything you want,(angst, intrigue, sex, love, alpha male) all wrapped in a quick little package. Unfortunately to me it felt more like it was a big chapter, taken out of a bigger story. But, I guess that’s what the 1.5 means. (I wasn’t big on the “Lucy babe” )
A new adult romance featuring a hot alpha hero and a shot of adrenalin. This novella has everything you want for a quick read: no filler, all action, intrigue and steamy scenes.
Warning: Adult sexual content and language. Ages 18+. And if overprotective, jealous alpha male could be a warning, I'm putting it right here too! :) Length: 25,700 words, about 91 pages.
This was a great story. It's a shorter story than the first book but we still get a great couple (I loved Nathan and Lucy) and a good story to keep things interesting so it's a good addition to the series.
Lucy is a college student. Her father is not a good man and she and her brother are working to try to sabotage his "business dealings". She is very careful to hide her activities and the only one that knows is her best friend. She started dating a Lacrosse player named Nathan at her school and she's uncomfortable keeping her secrets from him but doesn't want to endanger him by involving him.
Nathan is a special agent and has been assigned to get close to Lucy (trying to get any info he can on her father's dealings). This isn't a hardship for Nathan until he realizes his feelings have overcome his professionalism and he's fallen for Lucy. He isn't allowed to reveal his true identity until the operation is over so he stays close, thinking there's something she's hiding and feeling the need to be with her and protect her.
I don't want to give up the storyline so lets just say that Lucy ends up going to help her brother. Nathan finds out and he and Maia (heroine from Book #1) end up in Mexico to keep her safe and help with their objective. Things don't go well when Lucy and Nathan meet up again and Lucy realizes he's had secrets of his own. They do talk things out though and while Lucy's unsure about giving Nathan another chance there's hope. Eventually Lucy agrees to give Nathan a chance. However, just things start looking good, more drama ensues and Lucy is once more in danger and Nathan has to save her. Thankfully, Nathan has skills and is able to save the day. Loved the ending...very sweet HEA.
I really enjoyed this story. Lucy and Nathan are great together and I was happy to see them get their HEA. Can't wait for the next in the series. I'd recommend this story. Thumbs up! :D
I've received this arc from this beautiful author in exchange for my honest review... so here it is.. 2.5 stars rounding it to 3 stars!
I had a bit of a problem with this novella.. because after my mind was absolutely blown by the first book (which got 4 stars from me) this book just didn't, somehow, add-up.
Because I seriously LOVED Nathan! On the other hand I absolutely didn't like Lucy. During reading the events I felt myself watching the last fast and furious movie. I really loved the action part coming from Nate and Maia's side.. and that wasn't the case for me for Lucy.. I mean, she's a student - not sure how she's even thinking about working like this (she takes credit for wanting to save those girls, though) Loved the possessiveness in our guy ;) lots of awesome elements played their parts for me, still I don't feel that the story being short helped those elements weave a kick-ass novel like the first one.
While in the first one I was gasping and waiting for what's about to happen, here I found myself dreading what's about to come.
Plus, found myself looking forward for more exchanges between Maia, Jack and Viktor more than the characters of this book.. also, I felt that that 'Lucy babe' part wasn't working well like 'babe' had worked for Jack ;)
All in all it was an okay read, but I already have a watchful eye on the publishing date of the second novel. That one will blow my mind.. I just know it.
It's my mission to get more women reading their favorite books out loud to their men. Victoria Paige's (VP) books are a great choice, because every book she writes has action AND "action." *wink, wink* My husband is truly enjoying our adventure through her library.
It's been a long time since I read this the first time, so all of the surprises and twists were surprising and twisty all over again for me. I love the new adult bent of this one, while continuing with her classic military-type-alpha guy hero and strong, smart heroine. This is truly smut for smart girls. I love it when I have to look up a few words while I'm reading. Kindle has made that so quick and easy to do. I can read smut of this kind and still increase my vocabulary! Win, win!
Two of my favorite VP characters make an appearance in this book, Jack and Maia. I don't know what it is about Jack, but when he comes on the scene, I get all swoony and think, "Oh, JACK! My hero!" Yeah, cheesy, but I love it! I like cheese.
I'm looking forward to heading out and searching up the next VP book to read aloud to hubby. I'm all about reading in order. I'm surprised how fast we're getting through some of these with just a chapter a night! It's really become a special part of our day, to kick back and be a couple while the kids are cleaning up after dinner.
Five stars - high recommendation for Beneath the Fire! Do it for your man. :)
I really enjoyed this book very much. It was a quick, fun read that I recommend to fans of romantic suspense.
The action/suspense was really well-written. I could picture everything described. That's uncommon for me. Many authors confuse me & I waste time re-reading & trying to figure out what the heck is going on. I was very tense a few times when I wasn't sure what was going to happen. The bad guys were seriously bad. I'm talking, they needed to die.
The dialogue was good as was the story line. I liked all of the main characters, especially the main couple. A very hot alpha male with a heart of gold and a strong, sexy woman. I liked that they were all intelligent & cared deeply (more than they wanted to).
I wished 2 things:
1) Personally, I like longer & more graphic details in sex scenes. These were hot, really. I'm just really into intense erotica.
2) I also wish it was a longer book. I prefer LONG books. That's a compliment, really. I wanted to dig deeper & find out more about the characters.
I will read more from Victoria Paige in the future. Enjoy this romantic suspense.
This is the first book that I have read from Victoria Paige. When I read the excerpt, I was hooked because I love a hot alpha male. But surprisingly, even though I LOVED Nathan Stark, it was Lucy Cortez that was wonderful. I love a great heroine who has a purpose besides waiting to be rescued or told what to do. Lucy had a backbone and a drive to do what was best and I loved her character for that. I am giving this story a 4.5 because I wish it was longer so that the characters could be developed a bit more but, it did get me intrigued to find out more about the characters that popped in later in the story. So now, I will be purchasing Fire and Ice so that I can read about AGS, Maia and Jack (since he sounds like a hot alpha!)
ARC copy received in exchange for an honest review. Beneath the Fire
I got an ARC copy from the author to read and give an honest review I really enjoyed this book. I like that it had action, suspense and some steamy scenes between the main characters. Nathan is hot and I love that he is an alpha male but doesn't become a jerk. The story line was really good. Both main characters try to stop the bad guys with an interesting twist of one of them being close to one of the main characters. It was good that the author gave some background on the secondary characters and how she had them play a role in the story.
Things I would add or change ( not many because I really liked it)
1. More steamy scenes between the main two characters. The ones that were in the story were great but I want more please :)
2. Grammar : there were some words that were together: of course
3. Too much of Lucy babe, babe. By the end of the story I was tired of Nathan saying this
For a novella, this story packed a lot of stuff in it. Suspense, intrigues, deceit, innocence, sex, and love, of course I liked Nathan and Lucy...they were so cute together even though they both kept secrets. I loved that Lucy was a tad badass and fearless herself, especially, behind the wheel of a Charger. Some of the events in the story were a bit far-fetched; however, maybe not since I am not privy (considering I am an average citizen and therefore shielded) to the daring missions our nation's undercover badasses do. Even though I like a bit more graphic descriptions and dialogue with my steamy scenes, these were pretty good. I am persnickety about proper use of grammar and well--written word. This book did not disappoint me in this area. This would have a made good novel instead of novella. 3.5 Stars
I found the sex scenes to be hot and enjoyed the fact that there was action and all around badassery but had a difficult time buying into the plot. I think any book with both action and romance would be difficult in a novella format because there just isn't enough time to develop the characters and plot enough for a reader to really get into things. This is a part of a series though so I have a strong feeling that this would not be an issue if you read the first book as you already would have strong anchors for some of the characters and certainly for the organization itself.
My recommendation would be to read Guardians #1 first and then this novella but there is certainly enough information provided for a new reader to understand what is going on.
I was given a copy of this by the author for my honest review.
I wasn't sure what to expect as I have never read anything from Victoria Paige before, the one thing I will say that it was very short, but even saying that I didn't feel I was short changed in the story line.
Nathan and Lucy are what appears to be regular college students, until Nathan It was a fast paced story with great main and secondary characters that I hope we see more of. Over all it was a great read and I look forward to reading more from Victoria.
I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read that left me wanting for more from this story. Glad that it’s a series! :)
Nope. There’s no cliffhanger. When I was introduced with the other agents, I just got curious with their story, most especially Maia and Jack. Will read them soon. :D
Back to Nathan and Lucy. I think Lucy can be a kickass heroine too. She wasn’t just given a long story. Lol. I still like her though. And Nathan? *dreamy sigh*
Wish there were more details (and longer) in their car scene. Who cares if they were being chased by the Mob and some MC. Lol.
WoW!!! What a great read. This is the first book I have read by this author and I am really impressed. It was free on Amazon which makes it even better. I will definitely be reading all of her books from now on.
I loved the characters in this book. I'm not normally a fan of College romances, but this was better than all of the others I have read. It was nice to have mature opinions and actions instead of other books where they get blind drunk and act like twits for 70% of the book.
Both Nathan and Lucy are great, but I think I will have to read more about Maia and Jack next. Meeting them in this book really pushed me to purchase Fire and Ice.
I received this book ARC for my honest opinion and let me say you have it all. Drama, action, secrets, hot love making, there are drug cartels and sex trafficking. In all this You have two characters that meet in college and fall for each other because they have a common destiny, but the secrets they both hold may break them when they are reviled. can these two characters stay together? You won't be disappointed I read this book in two days and only cause I had to sleep if not i would have finished it in one.
* ARC provided an honest review *. This is the first book that I read Victoria Paige. I really enjoyed the book. The story managed to keep me from start to finish. The characters are strong and mature. The author knew very well develop the story and theme of kidnapped girls, was an important point of the plot. I liked the romance and steamy scenes that happen between the couple. The fact that they are disguised in their missions and having to hide it from each other it was very interesting. A book that I recommend for sure.
I had read Fire and Ice by Victoria Paige and really like it and I was eager to see if the author will continue to deliver and in my opinion she certainly has with Beneath the Fire. It's very rare to find a short novella that has all complete elements of a full blown full-length novel. This was an extremely well written story with fully developed characters that sucked you in and kept you reading until the very last page. A feat that I have found missing in many books that I have read lately. Well done Victoria and I can't wait for the next book to come out!!!
This addition to the series was packed with romance and adventure. Nathan and Lucy were a great couple and their chemistry sizzled. Their romance was awkward at times because each had secrets they were keeping from each other, which made me curious as to find out how their secrets would be resolved. Maia made an appearance and was the same spitfire heroine from Fire and Ice and continued to frustrate Jack, her fiancé. This book was fast paced and a great read. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Man I am so happy I read fir and ice for a review because I watch for the request for reviews from Victoria. Of course she did nor disappoint. This is going to be a great series and I can hardly wait for the next one. This book was short and sweet leaving me wanting more and knowing I have to wait for Silver fire. There is something about having both an alpha male that falls for a Berne has to control over protectiveness to his women.
I liked very much this book! It has action, romance and Nathan is really passionate . He is the main character of this history, who fell in love with Lucy when he was assigned with a mission. Lucy has hers secrets as well, and they think for a moment that they can't be together. After many dangerous situations, when both lifes were in risk, are their feelings enough to sticks together? Lovely book. But I with it was a little bit longer. I am happy for receiving a copy in exchange for a review!
Lucy and Nathan's chance meeting is not an accident, but neither can fight the attraction they have towards each other. Each one of them however have a secret that could tear them apart. Can they overcome their difficulties? What exactly are their motives?
Even though it was a short read I think it was better because of it. Rather than trying to make the book longer with extra scenes that make it feel less real, Paige, kept this as a Novella making it a better read.
I received a free copy for my honest review, so here it is. I love a great story that has a twist of suspense and love to last. Nathan & Lucy are a great couple even with them not telling the other all their secrets. The story flows well and is a fast read. This is the first book I have read by Victoria Paige and will be reading more from her. It is a great suspense/romance and well worth the read, try it and you will love it too, I sure did!
