What's missing from the hundreds of diets on the market to help us achieve healthier bodies? "The most important element, teaches Dr. Steven Gurgevich, is not in the body but in your mind." As a key member of Dr. Andrew Weil's physician's training program, Dr. Gurgevich has brought hypnosis to the forefront of modern medicine. With The Self-Hypnosis Diet, he shows that anyone can use medical hypnosis to achieve long-term success in shifting our appetites to healthier foods and reaching our desired weight. With 3 CDs of instruction for using hypnosis to reduce your appetite, increase your metabolism, remove emotional barriers, and more. Plus an "emergency" session to instantly deal with cravings.
I've never done self-hypnosis before, so I don't have a lot to compare this audiobook to, but I found it (for the most part) relaxing to listen to. Some suggestions didn't jive with my life, but most of them did, in a narcistic sort of way. (There is a lot of mention about how much YOU deserve this and how well YOU are doing and such. That must be the way of affirmations.) Anyway, the diet part really isn't about dieting, but about lifestyle change, which makes more sense anyway. The trance sessions are (overall) relaxing and frequently put me to sleep, which according to the author, is fine. I did feel a bit of extra energy and joy-for-life after listening to these sessions, even when the listening was done while sleeping. I'll keep this around to continue to listen to periodically. I wonder if he has ones other subjects, because they'd be worth looking into. Actually, after listening to the first session in my sleep, I woke up the next day and dressed up more than usual. Only after listening to it while awake did I connect this behavior to the “magnificent makeover” session I’d listened to the night before. 4/5
I found this audiobook on Libby. I've been listening to it for about a week now and recommend it for anyone wanting support with weight loss.
The idea of self hypnosis is to reprogram your subconscious mind to align with your thinking mind. So if you want to lose weight but feel like there are parts of you that self-sabotage, self hypnosis might help.
The book has different hypnosis sessions, called trances. Each one focuses on a different topic: self love and acceptance, emotional eating, mornings, before dinner, evening and more.
The trances reinforce the concepts that you're not a dieter or restrained eater. And that you're excited to be receiving the gift of a magnificent makeover.
This has the impact of casting your weight loss as a positive experience every step of the way. That can only help when it's easy to fall for instant gratification. I've noticed several times during the day that I'm repeating the helpful autosuggestions.
I plan to continue listening two sessions daily. I'm interested to hear what others have experienced with this audio book or other self hypnosis audiobooks.
I really liked this- as an audiobook. I'm not sure if the traditional books come with a CD or link to do the 7 hypnosis sessions, but with the audiobook (courtesy of the library) it was just like having a meditation session. This book really helped put science with personal perspective, and I think could be a super helpful tool in weight management, and thinking more positively about getting to our goals. Anything that makes this process less daunting, the better!
One of the better self hypnosis diet books out there - I listened as an audiobook and the voice was not too irritating, and the sessions were very useful.
I keep falling as sleep which to some that's not going under. Overall, its beneficial even if its to make me sleepy (I love and appreciate a good night of sleep).
"The most important element, teaches Dr. Steven Gurgevich, is not in the body but in your mind." Positive affirmations for getting your brain to fight over eating mental blocks.
This book is not as new-agey as the title suggests it might be. The basic premise is that your subconscious mind believes whatever your conscious mind tells it, so you have to be mindful of what messages you're focusing on. If you imagine yourself enjoying healthy food and healthy exercise, you will be able to make that enjoyment real.
I actually believe this, and intend to put it into practice. That idea came through pretty early in the book, though, and after that the book and CD didn't have much new to offer.
I probably can't critique the CD too much because I usually dozed off during it, except for session #4 which gave me a fit of hysterical giggles (probably not the intended result!). So far I've found it enjoyable but not especially helpful, but maybe I'll keep trying.
This audiobook was pretty good. It is not a diet/system/program. It is basically seven 20-30 minutes "sessions." Each session is just positive affirmations and using imagery. It's good to listen to in bed at night and in the morning. I think you can never get too much positive feedback and I liked hearing the voice tell me "You are making great choices" and "You deserve to give yourself the gift of a magnificent make over." There is also imagery . . . imagine shopping for new clothes and everything looks great and you feel amazing and confident. .. etc. If you need a shot in the arm on a weight loss journey this might suit.

This book has some interesting ideas, and a good primer for what hypnosis is. The end gets a bit bogged down with standard advice about how to arrange your enviroment for success.
