With a title that reveals who really holds the power in any safe/sane/consensual D/s relationship, this is a story that describes how one "pain-curious" man realizes his potential with the unexpected help of a job application. While there are some funny observations and bits that made me smile because Todd is just so clueless, the real message is a little more serious. The whole makes for a great mix, and some very hot first-time kinkiness for both partners in this developing relationship.
Todd may be the one who is being paddled or flogged, but he is the one who holds the power. Ash, who is just beginning to discover his dominant side, may understand that in theory, but it takes him a while to truly internalize what that means. Todd gets it on an instinctual level, and his rebellion against Ash just telling him what to do "without giving anything back", without giving Todd the emotional attachment he craves, is a big warning sign. Ash totally misses the point, but the Dom they are applying for a job with gets it all and masterfully directs them to where they need to be.
Ash is a Dom to the core. He may think he is vanilla, but his whole demeanor, his behavior toward Todd (and anyone else for that matter) just screams "dominant" to me. Ash takes a little longer to realize that he needs to get over his inhibitions if he ever wants to stand a chance for more than friendship with Todd. The main thing holding him back is that he doesn’t want to hurt anyone; it takes realizing that it's not "hurting" in the traditional sense if his partner enjoys what Ash does to him. Once he gets that, and sees how much Todd loves what is being done to him, there is no stopping Ash.
The passion between Todd and Ash, once unleashed, is palpable. The different way they react to the "test paddling" they undergo for the job interview is brilliant, and really makes the point about the difference between a masochist and someone who is not into pain. After the exact same paddling, Ash is uncomfortable, hates it, and cannot sit still; Todd, on the other hand, enjoys the lingering feelings of pain and heat. If you like stories about men discovering their kinky side, if you like reading about the process of discovery, and if you're looking for a read that is as hot as it is fascinating, then you will probably like this novella. I think it is an amazing look at the whole Dom vs. sub question.

4.5 STARS! This is such a fun series! I recommend you read this series in order even though each book focuses on one special couple. Kim Dare is an incredible talent!

Fantasy fun in the sun read--perfect for summer!
Todd, so beautiful in his awakening. He may be shy, but he stands up for what he wants. Go, Todd!
Ash equally adorable, bad-ass, but with more ruffled feathers as he realizes what almost got away.
Sweet learning for both men as they explore what Todd needs and Ash never knew he wanted. Sexy, hot and loving, even with Ash stamping "MINE" all over Todd. And the difference between the two's reactions to the paddling is hysterical. I shouldn't laugh, but Ash cracked me up. It's short, my biggest gripe, but a cute and complete story even if I grumble about wanting more. This seems to be my main objection to Dare's works. Is it realistic? Heck no! Is it entertaining? Definitely.
Recommended for readers who like first time BDSM stories and enjoy lighthearted ones.

Ashton Lewis and Todd Falder are friends, best friends, but not the kind that come with benefits. Not that Todd doesn't want that, he does, he's fantasized about Ash for ages, so it's disconcerting to find that the man he dreams about getting kinky with plans to enter the auditions for a job as an exhibition submissive for Dom Fulton Hollingsworth. Ash isn't a sub, is he?
Ash needs the money for a new bike and thinks submitting will be easy, after it's just acting, he's not so happy though when Todd declares that he will apply for the job too. For reasons he dare not analyze too closely keeping Todd away from Fulton Hollingsworth becomes far more important than the money. What happens when Fulton decides to audition both men for the job? Can Ash stand by and let Todd be dominated by someone else, and just where did those thoughts come from?
I am a Kim Dare devotee, most people know that, but saying that I didn't like her last couple of books, but in Masochists Choice the Kim Dare I know and love is back with a vengeance. I loved this book.
Ash was wonderful as the top who didn't realize he was a top, the way he gradually worked out that he hated anyone else touching Todd was realistically handled, and Todd, lovely sweet Todd was a joy to read, so sure that he liked it kinky he just trusted his gut and hoped for the best. Fulton also excelled as the Dom who realized right from the start what was going on; his little smiles gave it all away. I actually liked Fulton more in this book than in his own story, Vanilla Licks.
Masochists Choice is book 5 in Km Dare's Sun, Sea and Submissive series and is a direct follow on from book 4, Vanilla Licks, although you don't have to have read that book first, Masochists Choice can be quite happily read as a standalone but once you've read it I'd highly recommend you make the acquaintance of the rest of the men of Pendragon Bay.

This novella is a hot read. Two friends who work in a hotel, vie for the position of display submissive. One to entice the other and one to prevent the other. How does that work out ? Well, read it. And enjoy finding out
