Dr Suzanne Steinbaums Heart Book

Rate this book
In the tradition of Christiane Northrup, a renowned cardiologist integrates emotional and physical well-being in a revolutionary new approach to women's heart health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women in the United States. As a cardiologist with specializations in preventative cardiology and women's heart disease, Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum has dedicated her career to empowering women to keep their hearts, and themselves, healthy. She has observed that patients who seem to be at the peak of their lives are also often at the peak of their stress levels. Instead of enjoying better health and happiness, and reaping the rewards of career and family achievements, many of the women who come to see her suffer from chest pain, palpitations, and other alarming symptoms. Often, the cause is lifestyle-related, calling for a holistic approach that transcends medical intervention alone. The regimen Dr. Steinbaum developed has transformed thousands of lives and is now available to every woman in "Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum's Heart Book." Shifting the focus from stress-inducing to heart-centered living, Dr. Steinbaum's program helps readers open their hearts and experience a deep level of self-care, putting their heart health in their hands. Covering the traditional risk factors of heart disease, including how to control weight and blood pressure, she demonstrates how emotional awareness and self-image also play key roles in heart health. The book provides clear, step-by-step "prescriptions" for integrating diet, exercise, sleep, and a healthy sex life with stress management and loving relationships. The result is an intuitive, lifelong plan that addresses the root causes of heart disease. Published during American Heart Month, "Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum's Heart Book "delivers a refreshing new approach to heart-centered healing.

This was an interesting read with much information. The problem is it's an older book (2013).which means a lot of it is outdated. Read it for the overview of heart health but know there is more current information that one should explore.

I’m glad I read this book because it gave me an understanding and the words to use when I finally saw a cardiologist. I called after two primary care doctors told me
I just had anxiety. Things kept getting worse. Turns out I didn’t have anxiety I had a birth defect that needed an operation. I will tell all women to get the extra tests from
Here on out. I am grateful for
This book. It gave me the confidence to pay attention to my intuition and that it wasn’t all in my head. I found it at a time I was wrestling and wondering and it was a Piece of the puzzle that led me to know what was truly going on in my heart. I feel like my life was given an extension.

Very good for people that just want to learn or having problems with high cholesterol or other things. Dr. Steinbaum's book is a very pick me up book and it not only comes from someone that is a board registered cardiologist in New York City, but it comes from a big sister approach. Dr. Steinbaum, very much cares that you change your habits. There are recommended recipes and things such as food or condiments that you can or shouldn't eat when you are having problems with cholesterol or other issues.

Finally, a cardiologist who will tell you how to really take care of your heart that other doctors will not tell you! I highly recommend this book. It is just good common sense and a very easy read.

The author is a cardiologist, so the approach in this book is heart-centred: i.e. looking at disease and sickness in relation to the heart.

While this type of outlook was refreshing in some instances and some of the case studies she brings up, at other times I found this a bit too much. For instance, not everything in your life is going to be caused by an "imbalance" (as the author puts it) of heart-related issues. And by "heart", she means not just the physical organ, but everything to do with emotions as well.

She believes that the heart is the centre of the body and that we should let the heart be "in control" rather than the mind. While from a spiritual perspective this may make sense, we should not be promoting letting "feelings" or "intuition" rule over logic, rationality and common sense.

I suppose the author has chosen to go down this path because this book was written for women, and she believes that women, being primarily creatures of the aforementioned "feelings and intuition", should embrace "living from the heart".

Spiritual aspect aside, the medical and health info provided in this book I found to be adequate, but nothing really new or groundbreaking. The author talks about heart disease and how you can avoid it, some causes, symptoms, etc. For instance, you could be having a heart attack if you experience profuse sweating and nausea. But I already knew this from reading medical articles a long, long time ago, and I'm sure most people who read also do. And she gives some diet tips on how to overhaul your lifestyle so as to maintain a healthy heart. But again, most of this is common sense (at least to me), unless you're like the mother she talks about in the book who was feeding her baby potato chips, because she thought "potatoes are vegetables so they must be good!"

I quite frankly was more amused by the level of ignorance of most of the patients she mentions in her book (names changed of course). According to her, you get people who survive on diet coke, coffee, sweets, carbs, etc, then wonder why they are experiencing palpitations, anxiety, and other ailments. I mean, really?! And a woman who was taking a weight loss drug with a side effect that caused her to get irregular heartbeats, but refused to stop taking this drug and instead asked if there was any other drug she could take to stop the irregularity!

So, I didn't really learn anything new with regards to how to take care of myself or get a healthy heart in this book. What I did learn was that many women - at least, according to the author - can actually cure themselves if they want to, except they either don't know how, or aren't willing to.

I only skimmed through this but it looks very average. How someone can claim to care about sex hormones but be pro-statins is beyond me. And eating egg white omelettes with whole grain toast? Yikes, tell that to a diabetic. I thought it was common knowledge canola oil is horrible for you.

Positives are she mentions taking magnesium and not calcium

Anyone who has even the slightest bit of insulin resistance should run from this book like the plague.

Very comprehensive! A bit too wordy for my taste, which is why I gave it only 4 stars. As a retired MICU nurse who once worked in Cardiology, I appreciate this great overview of things to consider for your heart health. I gained a good heart health reset as a takeaway. Highly recommend if you are looking to up your game for your heart health.

This book is informative and easy to read. I recommend it particularly to younger women who believe that heart issues are older people issues. Dr.Steinbaum shows how to be healthy and prevent problems.
