Catching A Sorcerer
After a sorcerer kills her mother, fifteen-year-old Melantha is forced to live with her overbearing Gran. She longs for freedom, a normal life, and her spell-turner powers to develop.
Then an elf from the Magic Council shows up and offers her both freedom and justice for her mother's murder. She's their only hope for catching the sorcerer. All she has to do is help the Magic Council get past the sorcerer's defenses. There's just one catch.
She has to befriend the wimpiest kid in school: the son of the sorcerer. If she doesn't succeed, the sorcerer will be free to unleash his plan to remove magic from all spell-turners. But she'll have to be careful, or she may end up the sorcerer's next victim.

Melantha is a witch whose mother has been murdered by an evil sorcerer. The Council while investigating her mother's death come seeking Melantha's help to further their plan to finding proof of a suspect. Melantha's gran is very strict and doesn't allow her to make any friends saying they could be used against her in this world filled with evil doers. Little did Melatha know how right her gran would turn out to be! But when the help Mel is seeked for requires her to befriend the guy named Savion to whom nobody even speaks to kindly, what is she gonna do? On top of that him being the son of the evil sorcerer,how is she ever gonna pull this off without seeing suspicious?
I really enjoyed being inside Mel's head. She was funny, sarcastic,kind, brave and everything else she needed to be. Then there is Paul.I totally loved him. It might be weird with him being a cricket and all, but he sure was a hilarious one. I enjoyed the banter between Mel and him too much. I had a hard time stopping my laughs with him in the picture.
Paul let out a loud, "Shhhhh!"
"You 'shhh'!" I whispered. "You're louder
than the stairs."
"Hmph." He dropped into the box, turned his
back on me and curled up in the corner, glaring just before he turned his face away.
I shook my head. A cricket that was a drama queen. I'd never have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.
The plot was really interesting, I mean there is magic involved, people! What more do you need?? :D
The pace of the story was good and the overall story was real fun to read. I'm glad I went for Catching A Sorcerer. It was an entertaining read which at the end will make you happy.

“Catching a Sorcerer is a fast paced magical novel. I was hooked from the first sentence to the last. I have loved sorcery since Harry Potter and this book was a breath of fresh magical air. Sara Walker did a great job of creating a unique magical world that was believable. I loved that there was different types of sorcerers beyond just good and bad!
Melantha is a typical teen character with a lot on her shoulders. The story begins with Melantha living with her grandmother, shortly after her mother’s death. Her grandmother is quite protective of her and wants her to learn magic but Melantha basically refuses. So rebellious teenager aside, she steps up to the plate when she is given a task that will probably end in her death. I liked Melantha’s character from beginning to end and found her relatable! She resists magic only to find that it isn’t something you can resist, it is part of you. My favorite character however, is the cricket, Jimmy. I loved the banter between Melantha and Jimmy, it really livened up the story.
My only negative would be the ending, it felt rushed. I would have liked a lot more details in the epilogue. If the story is not going to be a series, I like being left with a satisfied feeling. I like to know where the characters are going to end up!

I don't know what I was expecting when I started reading Catching a Sorcerer but I definitely got more than I thought I would. I am not much of a witch/sorcerer/wizard fan (my boyfriend reads more than enough for the both of us) however, I loved this story. The beginning did seem a little slow only because Malantha spends 99% of her time in her home with her gran because she does not allow her to have friends or leave the house except for school. This drove me nuts! I just wanted her to sneak out the window or something lol. As I got further into the book I just could not put this book down. I love the characters that are introduced later on and yes I looooove Rory and Paul! The only thing that was disappointing to me was the ending. I wanted it to go a little more in detail to what happened and where the characters ended up. I felt like the end was a little rushed or short. Maybe it was just me not wanting the story to end lol. Despite this I still enjoyed the book very much. It was definitely worth reading and opened me up to a new genre of magic and witches. I think the author did an amazing job creating a magical yet believable and realist world with such colorful characters. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone! 4 out of 5 stars!

OMG! I was hooked from the beginning! I absolutely LOVE this book! It pulled me through and I didn't want to put it down. I don't know if Sara Walker put a spell on the book or not, but I am definitely an instant fan. The character interactions are unbelievably realistic. In fact, the beginning sounded almost exactly like people I actually know!
Walker has captured the spirit and heart of her readers and I, for one, don't want to be released. I have added her other books (listed on Goodreads) onto my TBR list and I am looking forward to reading more of her work.
Not only do you connect with the main character, Mel, but you also easily build a bond with the supportive characters also. There is no end to people you love, hate, or love to hate. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes YA, fantasy, or both. I wouldn't be surprised if this book wins over new fans to the genre too.

Catching a Sorcerer was a riveting story that filled my head with all sorts of magical notions. This story took off running and didn't stop until it hit the back cover. I was completely captured in it's spell that continued to weave through my mind like a lighting to water. Melantha (Mel) was your average teenage girl in the beginning she was a sulky loner who didn't care about anything or anyone but her own selfish wants but as the story grew so did she Mel began to see the bigger picture and that sometimes life throws us curve balls that we are not always expecting. In growing with the story so did the characters more of them became part of who Mel was and what she was to do and be. As Mel and her new found friends embark on the mission of a life time all heck was about to bust lose and no one was guaranteed to come back from. What an exciting thrilling book! I loved this story and hope to read more from Sara Walker.

I enjoyed reading Catching a Sorcerer, a young adult fantasy with interesting characters, some of whom are quirky, which makes it a fun read at times. Melantha is a typical teenager in some ways but it is easy to understand why she’s angry after losing her parents and having to live with an overprotective grandmother.
The story is engaging from the beginning and holds your interest throughout. Sara Walker is good at describing people, creatures, and places. I could picture myself right there with Melantha.
There’s a small amount of romance, but it was refreshing to read a book in which the romance is secondary to the story.
I definitely recommend Catching a Sorcerer.

This was a well written story with interesting characters in it.

Melantha lived with her gramdma because a sorcerer killed her mother. As Mel turns 16 is beginnings to get her powers and must stop the sorcerer who is stealing everyones magic and killing them. Mel and a guardian as a cricket named Paul set out to find out where and how his magic is growing. Mel must save her grandma and the boy Savion whos father is gone crazy for power. Will a young girls just turning 16 and doesn't even like doing spells succeed or will Lebrun win and takes all magic by using his son as a focus of evil intents.
This was a well written story with interesting characters in it.

This is a fun and imaginative YA novel of magic and adventure, which I found an easy read.
Walker incorporates subtle touches of humour into Melantha's dialogue (particularly with Paul) which made me smile. Mel's surrounded by an interesting mix of characters, including an elf, a cricket and an ogre, amongst others. No character is redundant - each has his or her role to play, and is memorable in his/her own way.
All in all, a solid and enjoyable read.

Not only will my friend Sara Walker's Catching a Sorcerer cast a spell among all reluctant or not readers, but this action fantasy is more relatable than any other book I read in 2015. Heck, Melantha Caldwell may as well be a twin to my series's main character, Paige Katika. I mean that in the best of ways.

Great read! I think the author really captured the age of the MC. The cricket was my favorite!

Tremendous read - Lord of the Rings meets Pinocchio vibes
A really great read. Okay there was no answer as to how she did what she did at the end. As she had been depleted of power how could she use magic? But nevertheless a wonderful fast paced read that most will love. The characters are as varied as they come from the almost Gandalf elf to our rebellious teenage heroine.
Since her mother's death her Gran has kept her on a very short leash. Okay she's now let her attend school but she isn't allowed to meet friends after or even to go to the library. However after a particular moment when she is reported as missing after arriving home 15 minutes late her world is turned upside down. All due to an Elf's arrival at their door. He has been sent by the Council to ask her to finish a job her mother died trying to do. Shocked by the news and because until the age of 16 teens didn't get their powers, she plays for time. Maybe this would be a way to get out from under the control of her Gran and actually have some fun. However she is set a protector. A cricket! What she doesn't realise is that the Council have set up safeguards to make sure the job gets done! She finds what required but the black mage has set up traps. Can they recover from the traps set? Will they be able to find the black mage and stop him?
