Maybe you win, maybe you lose... It all depends on the card you choose... Meet disgraced ex-DI Ellie Reckless , a self-proclaimed ' cop for criminals ', and the person the underworld calls when they can't call the police. For the first time in years, Ellie Reckless is at peace . Cleared of murder, and with her lover's death avenged, Ellie has her whole life ahead of her.
But with one of her team still recovering from a vicious and crippling attack, and the London police blaming her for the loss of "one of their best," Ellie finds herself distracted, especially when a new case lands with her team; the self-proclaimed "Queen of Conjuring," Zoey Park has disappeared during a stage performance - and not because of a trick gone wrong.
Now hunting a woman who doesn't want to be found, one who knows better than anyone how to become invisible, Ellie and her team start questioning the motives of their client, and wonder whether they're on the right team here - as they fall into a conspiracy involving street gang magicians, sleight-of-hand con men and money laundering escapologists, on the late-night London cabaret scene...
Should they be finding Zoey... or helping her stay hidden?
Jack Gatland is the pen name of #1 New York Times Bestselling Writer Tony Lee, who has been writing in all medias for over thirty years including comics, graphic novels, middle grade books, audio drama, TV and film for DC, Marvel, BBC, ITV, Random House, Penguin USA, Hachette and a ton of other publishers and broadcasters on licenses such as Doctor Who, Spider Man, X-Men, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Doctors, Wallace and Gromit and Shrek. As Tony, he’s toured the country talking to reluctant readers with his ‘Change The Channel’ school tours.
He’s currently a member of the Writer’s Guild of Great Britain, the Society of Authors, The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers and the Crime Writer’s Association.
As Jack, he’s writing a new series of Crime Thrillers starring Detective Inspector Declan Walsh, recently seconded to the City of London Police department known as the Last Chance Saloon.
The first twelve of these, LETTER FROM THE DEAD, MURDER OF ANGELS, HUNTER HUNTED, WHISPER FOR THE REAPER, TO HUNT A MAGPIE, A RITUAL FOR THE DYING, KILLING THE MUSIC, A DINNER TO DIE FOR, BEHIND THE WIRE, HEAVY IS THE CROWN, STALKING THE RIPPER and A QUIVER OF SORROWS are available now, with book thirteen, MURDER BY MISTLETOE released in December 2022 – with further adventures continuing throughout 2023.
In addition to that, the first book in a new series of Adventure Mysteries starring Robin-Hood style con-man forger-turned treasure hunter Damian Lucas, THE LIONHEART CURSE was released in January 2022, and he has both a new series of crime procedurals, spinning out of the DI Walsh series and featuring ‘Cop for Criminals’ Ellie Reckless including PAINT THE DEAD and STEAL THE GOLD, and a new spy series, spinning out of the DI Walsh series and featuring burned MI5 agent Tom Marlowe including SLEEPING SOLDIERS and TARGET LOCKED.
When a new case pops up for Ellie and the gang, there’s a little magic and a lot of mayhem. A well-known escapologist performing in the Piccadilly disappears during her act. No one knows where Zoe Park is. Meanwhile, Jimmy Chang needs a curse removed. Mysteries ensue.
First book post-“who set me up” plot line and this one involved many we’ve met along the way. If Ellie took Mama Lumetta (sp?) up on her offer, she’d be one hell of a gangster.
Audiobook has so many repeating sections that it became rather annoying.
Interesting story, but a really weak premise underlying it all. It doesn't really end, it never gets to the part about what happens to most of the players apart from the team. The plot beneath the plot was pretty farfetched.
Find the Lady by Jack Gatland is book 4 in the Ellie Reckless series. It is published on 26 November. A fire trick goes terribly wrong, and Ellie and her Finders team are called in to investigate. However, there is a lot more going on than it seems at first. There are many layers in this story which involves magician’s and their tricks as well as curses and misdirection. Jack Gatland cleverly weaves intricate threads through the story. Old ‘friends’ of Ellie’s make an appearance. I love the back stories of the characters that appear through the various books in the series, including this one.
The gang is all back and can't trust anything anyone tells them. Asked to find a missing magician, they find she may not be missing. She just decided to disappear. But why? And how is that connected to a possible gang war involving Chinese and Irish gangs.
Another entertaining story from my latest favorite author.
