Master illustrator Michael Hague has selected thirty-one of his favorite texts, carols, and poems and brought them together to create a lavish anthology that's the perfect celebration of Christmas.
All the classic stories and songs are here, as well as some new ones that are sure to become classics. There are entries for the oldest and youngest family members to enjoy, and the collection is divided into three the Spirit of Christmas, which celebrates the holiness of the holiday; the Story of Christmas, which recounts the story of the Christ child's birth; and the Celebration of Christmas, which includes music, songs, and stories by such writers as Charles Dickens and Dylan Thomas.
This is the perfect Christmas gift for all the people you love. Light the candles, pour the eggnog, and let Christmas begin!
Michael Hague is renowned as the illustrator of many children's classics, including editions of The Wizard Of Oz, Peter Pan, The Hobbit, and The Velveteen Rabbit. He also illustrated The Book of Ghosts, Where Fairies Dance, The Book of Wizards, and The Book of Fairy Poetry as well as wrote and illustrated the graphic novel in The Small. Michael lives with his wife, Kathleen, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
I love the some of illustrations and some were strange like the one of the angel Gabriel and the angel visiting the shepherds. I love the piano sheet music although they were all cords. The stories were not that great but that is a matter of personal taste. I don't like the depressing story of extreme poverty during Christmas like The Gift of the Magi and an excerpt from A Christmas Carol . I definitely didn't like The Year Santa Came Late because it has a ridiculous tragic ending where the reindeer die. The Fir-Tree is also sad because it squandered it's life wanting to be cut down and then it was cut down to it's death and gloom.
This book is a large, Christmas treasury of poems, stories, and artwork done by the author Michael Hague. There is a mix of everything Christmas that we already know and love. The quality of the book is good with thick, slick pages and a nice hard cover with an imprinted title. Although it is very nice it is a little run of the mill. There are the scripture pages, printed Christmas carols, and stories like Little Match Girl, (which I have never liked) and a few other stories from Truman Capote, Dylan Thomas and Kenneth Grahame from the Wind in the Willows.
Notes: starts with Bible stories and some carols with piano music; includes some poetry - the only redeeming part of this book; sprinkled throughout are snippets of longer stories (Wind in the Willows, A Christmas Memory...) or full xmas tales (Gift of the Magi, Little Match Girl, Little Fir Tree); the xmas tales are AWFUL, all of them are morbid and sad! a terrible compilation
