When Kate Ludlow's marriage ended, she packed up her teenage daughter and moved from Southern California back to her hometown in Connecticut. She also went about turning her part time gig as a wedding planner into a full business, hustling to prove herself to her new customer base. The florist she works with the most is Lori-Sue, which can be awkward since the two have a history dating back to high school. So when Kate finds Lori-Sue's body one day, she also finds herself the prime suspect. Naturally nosey, Kate gets involved. Can she clear her name?

This debut sounded fun, so I was looking forward to it. It starts out well, with Kate finding the body quickly. However, the further I went into the book, the more I struggled with it. The plot seemed disjointed at times, but connections are made at the end. Meanwhile, we learn things late in the book about Kate that would have been nice to learn earlier. Finally, the climax only works because Kate is stupid. On the other hand, I really did like the characters, and the cliffhanger is intriguing. Still, I think I will probably pass on the sequel, unfortunately.

This started out great and then just fizzle for me. Kate also starts out strong but then gets a little wishy washy and makes some TSTL decisions. I enjoyed the interactions between Kate and her daughter but tired very quickly of the somewhat love triangle that seems to be resolved but who knows. I also don’t see a wedding planner searching for a long-lost missing family ring, no matter how much the family is spending on her services, but I did enjoy the secondary mystery revolving around the ring. Other than that, I will continue with the series as long as the love triangle doesn’t pop back up.

3.5- Wedding planner Kate is used to having her hands full between juggling brides and life as a newly single mom of a preteen girl. But more falls in her lap than expected when she finds a dead body and becomes a prime suspect! To top it off, she has another mystery to solve for a challenging bride- finding an heirloom ring that has been lost for generations.

The book is perfect for cozy mystery cozy murder readers. It has a more formal way of speech, like many do. I find this a lot in cozies and it sometimes just adds to the vibe- like the New England old school community in this.

The brides were all interesting, I wish there were even more fun meetings and small challenges added in with different brides just because it added one fun and color to the story, breaking up the action.

I think the book would have flowed better if it was a bit longer because the pacing had to be quickened and it became jumbled in a few spots rather than climactic. However, the ending pulled everything together and was very satisfying.

I think this book had so much going for it. It just was missing taking breaths with different characters in between action- maybe adding to the romance, the mother-daughter relationship and her friendship with Jen. I loved the sections with Kate's rival Ivy and think there's so much promise for more to come there in future books!

Thank-you so much to Mary Karnes for sending me an advanced reader copy of your book. I really enjoyed reading it!

Wedding Bride and Doom is the first book in A Wedding Planner Series. Kate Ludlow is a wedding planner and has recently moved from California to her former home in New England after her divorce from Grant. Her daughter Ellis, unhappy about the move. Kate now has to turn her business from part-time business to full-time.

Kate is excited to book the society wedding of the year. It is important for the success of Marcy Simpson’s wedding to help bring in new clients. Keeping the wedding as her focus Kate also has agreed to look for a ring belonging to the bride's family, that has been missing for decades as part of the contract. Kate is off to secure the best florist when she finds her murdered. Kate finds herself a person of interest since she found the body. Kate has her hands full when bodies keep dropping, and her ex-husband turns up adding more drama than she needs right now.

This was a fun fast afternoon read. The story is told from Kate's point of view, which is hilarious as we see her thoughts of what she really thinks about some of the characters. There are some recipes that are added after the end of the story that are talked about during the book. I think this is a great idea to add the recipes after hearing about them. Looking forward to more wedding planner adventures.

I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.

I enjoyed this modern whodunnit with a wedding planning twist. The plot was nicely paced and the small town secrets were interesting. While there was a list of suspects, it can be improved by making them more suspicious and having heavier twists. I liked that the ends tied up nicely (except what was up with her injured leg?) but confused on the ending as to why the entrance of a character caused such a reaction. Then right after that, it going straight to chapters of solely wedding tips was a little disjointed. I did like the quick wedding tips at the beginning of the chapters was a nice touch.

WEDDING BRIDE AND DOOM is the first book in the brand-new Wedding Planner Mystery series by Mary Karnes. With a career as a professional wedding planner, the author brings her expertise to life on the pages while weaving a tantalizing tale of deceit, blackmail, and murder. Each chapter starts off with a wedding planning tip and, whether or not you’re thinking of a wedding, I found them both educational and enjoyable. The protagonist, wedding planner Kate Ludlow, is a mother to a teen girl. I liked that Kate is older than the usual protagonist, yet she still has an inner snarky voice (no doubt influenced by her daughter) that lends a bit of humor to the story. That “voice’ is especially evident when dealing with her teen daughter, bridezillas, and unreasonable vendors, and makes Kate quite relatable. Ms. Karnes does an admirable job in showing a single working mother juggling multiple weddings alongside raising her daughter. It’s a wonder that Kate can find time to fit in some sleuthing after finding the body of the florist… the same florist Kate had had a public argument with the day before.

Despite the backdrop of planning weddings, visiting gorgeous wedding venues, and discussing the many facets of the industry, the mystery itself is foremost, with the crime occurring early on. Kate finds ways—some that had me on the edge of my seat and biting my nails—in finding information. There is also a subplot of a family heirloom ring, missing since the bride’s grandmother’s youth. The bride cajoles Kate into tracking down the ring. I initially thought it might be a scene filler, but Ms. Karnes meticulously wove the two plots together in an impressive and seamless manner. Clues were planted throughout and I’ll admit, I fell for some of the misdirection. Even though Kate took some risks in sleuthing, she proves to be most resourceful. With a suspenseful reveal, the clues came together and all my questions were answered. Of course, being a wedding planner, there must be a happy ending and the author provides one, along with a tantalizing hint at what might happen in the next book. I, for one, will be waiting on pins and needles for the next release!

As the story concluded, I was pleased to find bonus material at the back of the book. Ms. Karnes provides thoughtful tips for planning a wedding along with tips for guests attending a wedding. There are also several recipes for the home cook to try out.

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Setting the Scene: After betrayal by her husband and her now former best friend, as well as a contentious divorce that left her with virtually nothing, Kate Ludlow moves herself, her teenage daughter Ellis, and her once part-time wedding planner business to her New England hometown. Kate is struggling to build her wedding planning business, and the Marcy Simpson wedding is key to that success. Unfortunately, that particular job comes with a unique side-gig, namely a scavenger hunt for a family heirloom that went missing years before. Then disaster strikes in the form of the murder of the florist for said wedding, the florist with whom Kate had a shouting match and exchanged angry texts only days earlier. Becoming a murder suspect wreaks havoc on her fledgling business and complicates her search for the heirloom, but Kate is determined to clear her name, find the heirloom, and save her business. Further complicating things is the fact that the police detective assigned to the case is her high school sweetheart, and her ex-husband suddenly shows up on her doorstep with the former best friend in tow. Kate has her hands full.

What I Thought: I thoroughly enjoyed this first in series, tropes and all. The story is entertaining, and the core characters are likeable and intelligent. Kate is my favorite kind of protagonist, slightly flawed, intelligent, and neither an iron maiden nor a wilting violet. Her best friend has her own backstory that we are about to hear more about in Book 2, based on the ending of this book. Ellis may be the best surprise in this book. Yes, she has some typical teen struggles, but she is one awesome kid, and she has her mother's back when it counts. I also like the love interest that blossoms quickly, in spite of plenty of obstacles. I know some are not fans of the police detective and protagonist trope, and others prefer a slow build to relationships, but Kate is no 20-something ingenue, so why waste time? Thankfully, they do escape the dreaded love triangle, at least so far. Fickle will not become Kate, so here's hoping the author does not mess that up. The mystery is well plotted and has sufficient suspects and surprises. The hunt for the family heirloom was different and provided an intriguing sub-plot of its own. The "Wedding Tips by Kate" at the beginning of each chapter are a nice flair. If you are looking for an enjoyable cozy with mature characters, I recommend you give this one a try. I am looking forward to the next visit with Kate and the crew.

I was given an early. copy of this book and these are my own honest opinions. This was a page turning cozy mystery/wedding planner series. Kate had a wedding planning service in California, until her husband, Grant decided to file for divorce and take up with her now, ex-best friend. So Kate and daughter Ellis move back to Kate’s hometown in Connecticut to open a wedding planning company there. Even though it was a fledgling new company she did manage to score the wedding event of the year. This story covers many facets of the job of a wedding planner which included searching for a wedding ring which hadn’t been seen for 50 years and the bride must have it in time for her wedding; so Kate must find said ring before the wedding. Each chapter gives wedding etiquette tips. Meanwhile Kate’s high school nemesis is killed in her flower shop and Kate is the prime suspect since she finds the florist is deceased and the two had just exchanged argumentative texts within the last few days. Her high school sweetheart is the one who comes to arrest her. Need I say a romance is rekindled. Also Grant is transferred to Hartford. So many side stories to follow which keeps the story moving along quickly it includes many of Kates high school memories. I will be recommending and look forward to the next in the series. I look forward to seeing what happens during Ellis’s senior year. Special thanks to the following for allowing me to review an advance copy:

Book Review: Wedding Bride and Doom…….A Wedding Planner Series Book 1
Stars: 4 X 5
Author: Mary Karnes
Publisher: Level Best Books
Thank You Netgalley for this ARC.

This Mary Karnes debut is a cosy mystery. Kate Ludlow is a California wedding planner and she decides to move back to New England. She also brings with her a teenage daughter, Ellis. You can bet Ellis isn’t happy with this move. Kate books the society wedding of the year., Marci Simpson’s wedding! If Kate can pull this off then she should get an abundance of new clients. Kate also is given the task of finding a missing ring that is a family heirloom that has been missing for decades and that is not going to be easy. The florist Kate hires is found dead. Kate becomes a person of interest in the death since she was the one who found the florist. Not only did the florist die but a few others drop too. To make matters worse her ex shows up causing another bout of stress. All of this is not good for business. As Kate is trying to figure all this out she meets up with her old high school sweetheart who comes to arrest her. Will Kate be able to get out of this predicament or will she end up in jail. Also will Kate be able to solve these murders? This was a great book to start off a new series and I am looking forward to book 2.

Wedding Bride and Doom by Mary Karnes is the first in the new Wedding Planner Mystery series and offers readers a charming escape into the world of cozy mysteries. Set against the backdrop of a wedding planner's often frenetic business, the book follows the enterprising protagonist as she navigates the twists and turns of planning a wedding while stumbling upon a mysterious case.

As the plot unfolds, secrets are revealed, motives are uncovered, and the amateur sleuth's journey to solve the mystery is both engaging and suspenseful. Mary Karnes balances the suspenseful elements with moments of humor and romance, creating a well-rounded and enjoyable reading experience.

Wedding Bride and Doom is a delightful addition to the world of cozy mysteries, offering a perfect blend of intrigue, camaraderie, and a touch of wedding magic. (I received an advance reader copy of this book and all opinions are my own.) Mary Karnes' storytelling talent shines through in this cozy whodunit that keeps readers entertained until the final "I do" of the story.

Wow, this is a true page-turner! Mary has a true knack for character development and realistic world-building. I genuinely feel like I know and like Kate Ludlow, our main character. Mary provides little details about each character that give glimpses into their personality, emotions, and quirks. When Mary writes about Kate snuggling up with her cuppa and her robe, I know that she is trying to relax, rather than stating "Kate was trying to relax." I love those intimate details that help the reader to feel like the characters aren't just on the page, they are cherished friends. The mystery is multi-layered and complex while avoiding messy loose ends. I love the recipes, and wedding tips, and love the "Tip for Further Down the Line." This is an easy, fun read and it is great for a relaxing beach day. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Thank you to NetGalley, Level Best Books, and Mary Karnes for the wonderful opportunity to read this ARC before the release date!

Wedding Bride and Doom, the first book in the A Wedding Planner Mystery series by Mary Karnes, is enjoyable, revolving around the enjoyment as well as the challenges (can anything be more challenging than a bride gaining 40 pounds after the gown has been purchased?) in the planning of weddings with a murder mystery thrown in and creating a distraction and keeping you guessing until the end…not all was as it seemed. The cast of characters was realistic and relatable…each with their own unique personality, making the story move quickly...gaining momentum as the pages turned. I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series…I now have a vested interest in how the characters evolve.

Wedding Bride and Doom is the first book in A Wedding Planner Mystery series by Mary Karnes and unfortunately not really my cup of tea as it turned out, although I loved the premise and it sounded so nice and promising.

I found the main heroine to behave quite silly at times, almost like a highschool girl in some aspects, as far as the romantic interests in her live go, it was especially annoying as she is a mother of a high school kid.
Her inner dialogue was often funny and amuzing.
The plot flowed nice, it was a steady read with several interesting side characters, a lot of wedding trivia and funny moments, which I enjoyed.
However, the sleuting process left a lot to be desired in my opinion. It was all over the place, will she-won't she and it was somehow all over the place.
I really liked the secondary mystery. Always a plus in my book.

What a great start in this delightful new series. California wedding planner Kate Ludlow moves back home to New England with her teenage daughter after a nasty divorce. Off to a good start, She is thrilled to book a high society wedding which could be a big boon to her new business. The local florist is Kate's high school nemesis. When the florist is murdered, Kate finds her body and instantly becomes the main suspect. The police detective on the case is her high school boyfriend, and the spark between them seems to still be alive for both of them. This book had a good plot, interesting likeable characters, and a secondary mystery as well. This was a fun, quick read that had me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to read the next book in this highly entertaining series. My thanks to netgalley for this ARC to read and review. I enjoyed every page! 5/5 stars

Wedding Bride and Doom by Mary Karnes is a delightful read. Yes, it is a mystery, a murder mystery. There are more suspects, motives, rivals than one needs, but in the end, Kate Ludlow solves the crime. Having moved back to her hometown after a divorce, Kate rekindles old friendships and reawakens old enemies. When one of these enemies ends up dead, Kate is the prime suspect because of an old high school fight between her and the victim. Fortunately for Kate, the chief detective on the case is her old high school sweetheart, Brian. The novel takes many twists and turns, and one hops from one suspect to another as the possible killer until the crime is solved. This book has everything, crime, friendships, enemies and love to boot. I enjoyed this book very much.

Fantastic debut novel by Mary Karnes.

An easy to read, cozy mystery - wedding planner Kate and her teen daughter Ellis have moved back to New England after Kate's divorce and she's set up a new business. Things are running smoothly, she's busy and taking on new clients when she's named a suspect in the local florists murder. But it seems a lot of folks had secrets and they're all coming out in trying to find the murderer. A great cast of characters, an intriguing story and lots of mystery in this one!

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.

If you enjoy mysteries where the background is entirely founded on high school angst, you will adore this new series. Everyone from the MC to the victim to the police detective to her attorney (and more) are all connected through their high school days despite all of them being in their mid to late thirties. Sorry, but not my cup of tea. The character development makes each of them realistic and the plot development is solid and has some really tricky plot twists.

This is a cute idea for a book series. Each chapter starts with a tip for planning your wedding or for the actual wedding day. I just found the story too perfect. Every obstacle that was thrown at the main character, Katie, was nearly solved without much effort. She somehow knew where to find items that had been missing for 50+ years.

There were also some sentences that didn’t make sense. I think with a little refining and flushing out this box could be better. Thank you to Nat Galleyfor allowing me the opportunity to read this book.

This was.... bad.
Everything just seemed to fall into the FMC's hands. She had some questionnable decisions. I thought to myseld ''just give this info to the police ffs'' as she had no reason not to. The mistery around the ring was boring and the way she solved it had me rolling my eyes. The murder investigation of a horrible person who was hated by everyone was vapid. The way the FMC had a feud with almost everybody in this town was disturbing. I give this 2 stars since I keep my 1 star to my DNF.

This is a cosy mystery murder story which I love reading, especially during the autumn months.

I was hooked from the start as we get to murder element pretty quickly but found there were almost too many characters and sub plots going on to fully enjoy this. The writing style kept me interested and had a good flow.. I enjoyed the back and forth between the MFC and her daughter and the wedding tips but overall it felt rushed at times. It could have also been improved with stronger plot twists that would have made the overall story more gripping.

Overall an enjoyable cosy mystery read.

The writing was lackluster and boring and the author tended to write what the characters were thinking, and add it as part of what they were talking about, which made it feel repetitive. For example, "that seems silly, I thought. 'That seems silly' I said to my friend." Multiple times something along those lines was done and I found it annoying. I also don't super enjoy when an author goes out of their way to not use swear words, by pointing out in the POV that the character is choosing not to use a swear word.
The story was fine, but not super interesting overall.

Terrific fun! Karnes keeps multiple balls in the air, and then pulls it all together at the end. A fast-paced enjoyable mystery by a real-life wedding planner, who knows what she's talking about!

Did not make me regret my decision to have a relatively small, informal wedding, but enjoyed the ride!
