Mara and her fated mates are in a race against time. One of them is still being held prisoner, and more students are falling victim to the prophecy every day, going to sleep and never waking up. Tensions are running high, and the arrival of the Nightmare King to the Wyldthorn campus doesn't help. Can Mara work out what she needs to do to free everyone? Will fate cut the newly formed fated mates a little slack and let them develop their relationship? Autumn is a time of fear and magic, and fear is a thick scent in the air.
Depths of Autumn is the third book in the four book Wyldthorn Academy Series. It is an MMFMM Why Choose Romance, with fated mates, and a lot of spice.
1.5 || this book is 2/3 filler. up until 80% i felt like there was little to no progress in the story. instead, we get countless repetitions of things we already know from every perspective and redundant inner monologues about insignificant matters (seriously, at some point one of the characters was ranting / stressing about something for entire 2 pages, but it was so unimportant, that i don't even remember what it was, only that i was incredibly bored lol) this constant repetition of "we have to do something! we're not doing enough! we have to get him back! we have to make a plan! he's such an asshole! she's addicted to coffee!" can get pretty tiring, especially if it comes up every couple of chapters. also, this book currently holds the record for the number of typos among all books i've read so far. it feels like the editor gave up right in the middle. there are not only typos, but pronouns are getting mixed as well and at at least one point someone referred to mara as nora. also - inconsistencies. in the first book we learn that forrest's fate mark is on mara's collarbone, dorian's - on her wrist. for some reason, this book swaps their placements. why? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Do you want a book that has no smut? Don't read this lmao
What about smut galore? A really good plot? Awesome characters with so many different personalities? So many different supernatural creatures? A badass FMC with a caffeine addiction? This book is for you.
Mara's major character development? Wonderful, I love to see how far she's come The Nightmare King? Excuse me... Daddy!? THE ORGY!? OH MY LORDY The DRAGON? WHaT Is HAPPEniNg
Tiernan is still best boy, he can tie me up any day ;)
I'm so mad it was a cliff hanger too. WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME AHHHHH
Depths of Autumn kicks off where book 2 ends. Forrest is still asleep, yet he is very wounded. Throughout this book, you see relationship growth with Mara and her 4 men, especially with Dominic and Forrest. We are also introduced to Vassilis, the Nightmare king, and learn very quickly how he earned that title.
The book ends on a major cliffhanger, and I can't wait until the final book comes out to finally find out what happens with Mara, her men as well as Nora, Lawrence, Vassilis and the school of course!!!
There are many spicy group scenes, including mm content.
The third instalment in a fated mates, why choose romance between a girl and four Princes.
Depths of Autumn is the third instalment in the Wyldthorn Academy by L.K. Shear. As expected, this book picks up directly from the cliffhanger from the previous book, which really helps to keep the reader engaged throughout the series. I appreciate when a series can flow well from book to book without feeling like I'm getting confused about missing any key moments or context that the author has accidentally omitted from the end of one book and the beginning of another. Shear makes sure the reader knows exactly what is going on at all times which shows how great of an author she is.
In terms of the overall plot, it is paced really well, and with this being the penultimate book, we make significant progress with each character's personal growth and obviously the relationship between Mara and the four Princes. We see Mara become accustomed to her Kitsune form and start to grow confidence when in it, which is nice to see considering how much she struggled to even shift in book one. Oftentimes, I find that Mara's entire personality revolves around the Princes but it was nice to see her really in tune with herself and want to go out of her way to help people, especially Forrest.
Speaking of Forrest, I'm so glad that we got to know and understand him more in this book as the events of the first book left me confused about whether I liked him or not (I do understand his point of view more clearly now!). It was nice to see him and Mara communicate, and as a whole, it was nice to see Mara communicating with everyone, really.
However, I will say that Mara's individual relationships with the 4 Princes still feel incredibly lacklustre. The only interactions I am truly engaged with are the ones between Mara and Tiernan, as he was the only one who hasn't had a problem with her from the get-go. The relationship between Mara and Dominic still makes me uncomfortable, even though I am glad there was some resolution there.
I look forward to seeing how Mara's story closes in the fourth and final book.
L.K Shear has done it again! This series has quickly become my favourite of the year so far. I just love the world of Scion’s. The team of hunky supernaturals grow and the relationships start to open up. Mara aka kickass katsune grows a lot as a character and starts growing into her power and confidence. The fact she has 4 fated mates, like come on guys I’m jealous as all can be. Also let’s say there is a forest chase and it will leave you feeling hot and heavy.
Also, did I mention we meet the nightmare king. IM IN LOVE I NEED HIS BOOK NOW PLEASE.
We do get hit with a cheeky cliffhanger, but all is worth it because we have one more book to go. My life will be miserable until I have my final book. But what’s even better is I heard there will be more in the SCION UNIVERSE AND OMG TAKE MY MONEY.
LK has created a great story, one which I have loved from the start. I can’t wait to until the next book and she will FOREVER be on my auto buy list.
So there’s Lots of talk of Gods and Demi-gods in this book but no actual recognizable gods actually appeared. There was a Demi goddess but I won’t say anything more as I don’t want to ruin it for those reading this. Mara finally bonded all the guys, and she’s all of their fated mate. It’s unheard of for them, fated mates were talked about like it was a fantasy, no one has met anyone that had a fated mate and now she’s got 4! One for each season! I did find that it was quite slow, lots of building tension, all of them trying their best to come up with a plan to save Forrest and the rest of their people. Marra seems to have instincts on where to go but no one wants to let her go further than just seeing the lake when all her instincts are telling her to keep going. They don’t get any farther trying to decipher the Prophesy. They go to class and get it on at home. There’s pages and pages of pages and pages and pages of foreplay, and like 2 paragraphs of them actually going at it. It got a bit annoying, as this seems to be the trend in each. There’s more foreplay happening than anything else. Full chapters are foreplay. When I say that there was more foreplay than anything else, I mean it, it has dominated this series so far. Dont get me wrong it’s hot, it’s written with incredible accuracy, and makes me feel a bit uncomfortable when I’m reading in a public place like my work place… having to make sure no one is reading over my shoulder cause they will think I’m reading straight up porn. lol. We got to read more of Forrest’s point of views which helped me connect more with him. He needs his place to shine and I’m so glad that he’s now front and centre. That ending, was a tough one. I read the summary of the next book so I think I know what’s going to happen next and it makes me not want to read it. I’m sure Mara is fine, I don’t think Forrest knew that Vasilis was there to help, I Hope it was Vasilis. He inspires his Scion powers so Forrest may have been just caught up in the moment and not realized the significance of him saving Mara. The story is interesting, it kept my attention, I just may have skipped a few chapters as I wanted to see how the plot unfolded. If I could, I’d rate this 4.5 stars,
“I owe you so much more than hurried kisses in a prison cell. There is a lot to make up for, and I want to see you while I do that.”
Okay I’m calling it. LK Shear writes the best primal kiss chasey and group scenes. There, I said it. Mark it in your diary peeps. Today was the day I made that call and I’m sticking to it! They are epicccccccccccccc! Wow I’m so in love with these scenes. They will live rent free in my head for many a fun times to come.
The pacing in this book was a bit tame for me. Lots of bratting out, Mara was mega anxious and restless for the whole book which was a bit challenging at times. Much conversation, running in the woods, not as much external plot development until about 70%. Then there was this epic rescue mission and I was back into the zone. The rescue was excellent but the celebrations afterwards… well you’ll just have to read to find out. You don’t wanna miss it. Like for reals. Just read it!
Okay is anyone else hoping there’s a little age gap Daddy Nightmare King action in the next book? Just me? Okay moving right along. Can’t wait to read the finale of this series. I’m loving how all the mythology and fantasy elements are overlapping in these tales. Great series!
Honestly I got bored. It felt like there were just as many spicy scenes between 2 of the MMCs than there were of the FMC with any of the MMCs. I mean, smut is smut and I don’t want to complain but it just felt like some of the scenes weren’t necessary.
She also hasn’t even really had a chance to bond with one of her mates because he’s been in a sleep coma thing for a vast majority of the last 2 books. At this point, it has probably been a few weeks if not longer since he went under. Maybe it’s just me but it felt weird how much sex the main characters were having while their mate/ brother was gone. I get that they’re trying to find a way to help him but it seemed like they were taking a break every few pages to hang out and/or bone. I personally would have preferred more of a sense of urgency but whatever.
Ultimately, I was disappointed with this series. Most of the characters were bleh and none of them were fully realized enough for me to connect with them and their story.

DNF. Reading this book felt like stubbing my toe and getting whiplash at the same time.
Dominic can genuinely lick the bottom of my shoe after I walk through a field of cow shit. I hated him so much. Not a redeemable quality on a single page in the 2.5 books of this series. And everyone excuses his behavior. And made Mara bridge the gap? But really they just had sex and then everything was totally fine 🙄
Also, why did Mara’s personality slowly just become a soggy piece of paper.
In Jean we trust because she’s the only one with any common sense.
And lol at having one of her mates be in a whole different field of existence for like the entire first two and a half books. And everyone just having sex while he is wasting away. Love that for him.
This book had a lot of information to pack into it, but it was really enjoyable. I would recommend this series to anybody who loves fantasy romance, the spice and it is awesome and I was just really happy with this book and of course there’s a cliffhanger which sucks and I am still a little angry about it but it’s fine. This author does an amazing job creating characters that go through developmental changes that you can have a character that you dislike in the first book but as of the third book, he love them so much that it hurts when they’re hurting. Highly recommend.
This series is very slow. slow action. Almost boring. I do enjoy the story, but it's really dragging at this point. This book could have been cut in half and combined with the previous one. Absolutely nothing happens in this volume except for one or two plot points and sex scenes. It is also marred by editorial and spelling errors. Several words are left out. Weird type symbols appear in place of punctuation. Words begin with two capital letters? I will read the last book, but if it's as slow as this one I will skip sections.
Book 3 of this series had me submerged in every word flowing off the pages. The characters, the way they grow, and the POV not only change but also allow you to glimpse the interthoughts without overlapping in such a repetitive display of the storyline. I was impressed, the way this story unfolds, and plots don't leave holes. Work of wonder. On to book 4 as I forgo any sleep at all because the level of captivating this series has done in a wonder accomplishment to the author.
Oh my soul...what an amazing story. I have been in love with this series from book 1 and to me it just keeps getting better and better and better. So this is book 3 and this book is filled with a lot more action. A lot of things are made clear in this book as well. We also get introduced to another character...the nightmare king 🖤🖤
Brilliantly written, very entertaining and that ending....I'm speechless and scared and anxiously waiting for book 4 now. Spice level 3.5
Yessssss! This story just keeps getting better and the spice in this one 🥵 I am absolutely devouring these books. Those cliffhangers though… I am loving watching Mara grow in her confidence with her fated mates by her side. I love Tiernan so much, but lets be honest, I love them all. I really enjoyed seeing the developments between Dom and Mara too. And Forrest’s vulnerability was just perfection. It will be interesting to see how this adventure concludes!!
These cliff hangers are going to be the death of me!
Im so fucking happy they got forrest out and the scene with all the men and Mara 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶. This book has been intense to say the least with them all trying to figure out how to unravel the prophecy and free forrest and cure the poison.
The fight scene at the end.. um wtf! What happened to the teacher? Why is she attacking the school? I have so many questions and the bloody cliff hanger!!! Argh

Depths of Autumn is the third book in the Wyldthorn Academy series and continues Mara’s story as she tries to solve the mystery surrounding the sleeping students and continues to build relationships with her fated mates. I enjoyed reading this book and the story was great. The ending has me on the edge of my seat and now I’m dying to read the next book to see what happens next. Overall, a good read and one I would recommend.
Something is wrong with this series. It kinda hits all the right spots but not. The dynamics between the harem members and Mara is strange. I am unused to the heroine not being a centre in the relationships. This is a fast burn in terms of sex but slow burn in terms of emotional connection. Also the way the story flows does not particularly work for me. There is no tension and release, if that makes sense. It's not bad, quite good, actually. Just strange.
Okay okay, ummmm Nightmare King? Fomo-whats? What is happening. And where the heck did the dragon come from?!
This series has honestly captivated me, and there is SO much going on. I love all the supernatural beings, and all the different characters and personalities. This book really got into the plot a bit more for me as we started to really get some developments on what ON EARTH is happening!
It's so fast paced and always something new happening. Has really been a great series so far! 🫶
I've adored this series since I ARCed book 1 and this book was beyond amazing! I was literally on the edge my my seat for 90% of the book and the cliffhanger ending... yeah! I'm to dive into the ARC for Rise of Summer ASAP!
If you like spicy paranormal Romance you definitely need to check out this series!
So freaking amazing!! I live for the cliffhangers LK drops on us!! The plot twist. So many unanswered questions. Mara and how slowly she is learning to control her abilities. I love it!!
This series was so good and I enjoyed the world building. The female lead has a never give up attitude and would do anything to see all of her mates whole & happy. I enjoy that the author pulled mythical creatures from different cultures. Definitely recommend reading this series.
It took me a minute to read this due to adulting in life. But what a cliffhanger! I loved the flow of the plot, even though I had to stop reading it multiple times and then continue reading it. I didn’t forget a single thing and could continue reading right where I left off.
Absolutely in love with this series, book 3 did not disappoint. I love the interaction between Mara and the guys, the mystery of whats going on and learning to trust one another. Another cliffhanger, so now I'm desperate for book 4. spicy for sure Love it!!
