This is a Victorian classic though it must be understood that it was published as a serial and written by multiple authors, some of whom were undoubtedly well-known in literary circles. Published as one volume, it's a 'horn book' of erotic short stories, bawdy jokes, poems, drinking songs, and a lot of pornography. Including the usual Victorian tropes: flagellation, coming-of-age, country house tales, the naughty governess, the depraved nobility, the insatiable harem, the lewd sailors, the boarding schools and monasteries and all the usual perversions one expects of the genre . The morality of the 19th century was questionable, and that is reflected in their pornography. And in ours, I daresay. The variety is part of its charm, though as with all Victorian porn,it's not for everyone.
Kind of agree ultimately with the review that states that this book is kind of amusing at first but just becomes repetitive and to be honest fairly boring...it is however something of a curio and does show that 'Victorian values' weren't maybe as cut and dry as our politicians think!! I heard of this book due in part to a Wikipedia article on 'the league of extraordinary gentlemen' which mentions the graphic novel does give a nod to characters/places within this novel...the idea of 'Victorian erotica' in itself was interesting..was it to be based on a finely turned ankle which would cause a tug of the cravat?...sadly there's not enough of that type of stereotype and not enough fragrant language to keep me compelled and amused..in fact it soon gets boring. As a hint of 'gentlemans magazines' of yesteryear it is valid and what with all things 'steampunk' might be worth a read..interesting too some of the end limericks and odes which have a pop at Victorian staples such as Religion and Royalty..in such a way the read at time seems more in tune with modern audiences and is interesting for opening my eyes to a different Victorian age..
I'll never forget finding this book as a budding adolescent on my Father's shelf, boy what a surprise. All, and more of the real world of erotica and victorian denial anyone would ever want to learn.
I perused this paperback on the halls of my high school snickering at what I was reading oblivious to everyone around me and ironically loved how little they knew of my own carnal eduction. Highly recommended, especially if found by male adolescents in their Father's lair.
Interessante, sobretudo para avaliarmos o erotismo literário no séc. XIX. Todavia, a insistência no castigo erótico que passa por vergastar em público cansa o leitor.
considering when these stories where written & the rather prudish public views that was taken towards sex & all of its acts at that time they truly have there place & moments & thus taking them in there proper context (the time when they where written) some of these stories are better then 50shades of grey & E.L. James could use some lessons as to what true BDSM is all about because for my time & money her books where a waste of both she obviously didn't get any of her so called BDSM scenes from anyone in the lifestyle there are plenty of forums & sites she could have gone to talk to the people that are in the lifestyle & thus have gotten much better information as to how to stage a proper BDSM scene in short she's a hack of course we all have our rights to our own opinion.
Amusing at first for the archaic obscenities, but like all pornography becomes repetitive - here the most popular scenarios are canings, deflowerings, canings, deflowerings...
