In a world teetering on the brink of chaos, love emerges as the ultimate battleground.
Bellamy Blackwell wants to believe in a better world. Unfortunately, the world refuses to cooperate. He thought he had nothing left to lose until an ancient evil sets its sights on Magnolia, a witch he’s been protecting from the shadows for years. He quickly realizes there are no lines he won’t cross to defend a soul still worth fighting for.
The shadows are hunting for Magnolia Green. A healer by blood, and shadow-walker by birth, Magnolia spent years fighting the darkness within, until a relentless attack ravaged her hierarchy. When Bellamy extends a protective hand, she knows better than to go it alone. What she never expected was joining forces with the legendary Commander of Grayshell.
Grayshell may have won their battle with Adrastos, but locked out of The Middle, they’re poised to lose the war…and everything that matters to Aren in the process. In his mission to breach the chasm between hierarchies, fortify defenses, and get his people back to Grayshell before Adrastos strikes again, he didn’t expect to find love—let alone in a young healer hiding an impressive arsenal of talents. But with an inter-dimensional war on the horizon, can Aren afford to split his focus?
Commanding Earth and Shadow was dark, emotional, and completely atmospheric. The world of Grayshell has such a moody, haunting pull that made this sequel impossible to step away from.
Magnolia’s journey was layered and raw, and I loved how her strength and vulnerability were both on display. Aren brings the fierce intensity, Bellamy adds heart, and the side characters round it out with loyalty and grit that give the story real depth. The mix of magic, found family, and slow-burn tension gave me all the vibes I was hoping for.
And that ending? The kind of cliffhanger that makes you want to scream and immediately reach for the next book (which doesn’t exist yet!). This wasn’t a perfect read for me, but it was immersive, emotional, and left me desperate for more.
A strong 4-star sequel with moody magic, messy hearts, and a cliffhanger that won’t let me go.
4.5 stars. I'm shell-shocked. The last 5% of this book was phenomenal and completely ripped the ground out from beneath my feet.
As with the first book in this series, there is a lot to love about this story. The world, the characters, the plot. It was so good to see old friends from Grayshell in this book. I'm not even going to comment on the romance.
OK, maybe just a little. It was complicated. I was a bit bummed, then grudgingly happy because love is love, and these characters deserve it, then felt like my heart got ripped out, then was hopeful, but finally felt like someone snuck up on me from behind and whacked me upside the head really hard with a wok. I respect writers who upset me, though, and SJ Barnett did. Well done. I feel lost, confused, scared, and in dire need of the third book.
Where did the half star go? I personally felt like some of the dialogue/verbal sparring kind of hit wrong or was trying too hard when Mags and Aren first started hanging out. Minor gripe, in the scheme of things. Some of the romance was also just a little too sweet and wholesome for my tastes. Until it wasn't, but it made me a bit antsy and notice that the book was long. On the one hand, I was happy because it was cute, and there were lots of warm fuzzy found family moments. On the other, I love my angst and drama, and everything was just a little too rosy. I feel like communication went a bit shonky in the aftermath of the cotton candy too, which made me cranky.
That wasn't a little. It was a lot. Anyway... book 3? Gimme gimme.
--------------------- I just finished a re-read ahead of the release of book 3 in a couple of days. I listened to the audiobook this time. Brilliant! Loved it. 5 stars.
I was given the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review and wow…. I happened upon commanding flame and shield by a booktok recommendation of an amazing audio narration and it remains hands down my favorite audiobook to date. I could not wait to fall back into Grayshell and was so surprised to meet new characters. I do not believe in posting spoilers but please, if you love fantasy with a lot of grit, heart, found family and spice….. give this series a read! It will take a lot to knock this out of my top read of the year and it’s only January. S.J. Barnett is now among my favorite authors and I truly cannot wait for book 3 of this series! Hayes your hearts little souls this one will have you speechless!!
Buckle up buttercups because this story is a twisty ride and then some. So many highs. So many lows. This time around we get a closer look at Aren and an amazing witch named Magnolia. The fabulousness of this story is the depth of character development and watching these characters grow. Magnolia has one of those horrible female curses of constantly comparing herself to others and finding herself lacking. This lack of belief within herself, the inability to see her worth and value causes her to struggle to reach her true potential. Her inability to see herself accurately bonded me to her and broke my heart for her so many times. Other times it had me wanting to reach into the pages to shake her and help see what she is blind to. Through Magnolia, we are also introduced to the Nomad Bellamy. His need to protect Magnolia is phenomenal to read. He absolutely endeared himself to me in the way he cared and at times pushed Magnolia in her healing from a tragic event. How she is his priority. However the pull Magnolia felt (and I felt) to Bellamy was nothing compared to the pull that is Aren Amadeus. Aren is absolutely, completely, 100% perfection of a MMC. That’s not to say he doesn’t have his flaws, he does. But…but the way he adores Magnolia is breathtaking. Their spice is slow in coming, but that just adds to the delicious angst between them. Once their spice does hit, grab some ice water. Maybe a charged friend. You will need them. There are quite a few twists in this book that had my jaw on the floor, completely flabbergasted. The level of suspense in so many parts has left by backside with an indent from sitting on the edge of my seat. The ending had the beautiful S.J. Barnett saying watch this, and promptly kicked me of a cliff. I think I heard cackles. I am past the looking forward to what happens next column and firmly in the I NEED to know what happens next for Aren and Magnolia column.
“You are many things; but powerless is certainly not one of them”
As I write this review, my heart is still racing from the ride that CEAS was. The plot twists, the anger, the betrayal, the sadness and fear I felt in those last few chapters… Sydne’s done it again. She made me feel it all.
This book is a gorgeous sequel: it’s the story of a beautifully broken soul that reminds us even in our darkest hours we are not powerless. We can take it all back and become the potential we’ve always shown. It’s an ode to sisterhood, and testament that we each have in us what it takes to succeed. Magnolia’s healing journey is a powerful one to behold!
Aren… what can I say about this beautiful mountain of a man other than I’m obsessed with him?? Not only is he the greenest flag to ever green flag, but the man has this ability to suck the air out of any room he walks in, stealing all your attention away. He was exactly what I was hoping he’d be when I read CFAS, and more.
There is so much to say about Bellamy, but too many spoilers. So I’ll just say this: if the man is a sin then I am a proud sinner and I won’t apologise for it !
Cannot wait to get all these characters back in the next book 🖤
"From the stars they came, and to the stars they return"
This!!!!.............this book is why this author has a solid place on my must read authors list, you don't just read her words her storytelling is so beautiful you can't help but "live" her words as if your right there in her amazing worlds!!
Commanding Flame and shield was one of my top reads of last year and I couldn't wait to dive back into Greyshell. S J Barnett has a wonderful way of writing, her vivid descriptions paint a detailed picture of every scene transporting you along the journey right by the side of the characters.
Commanding Earth and Shadow is a fantastic continuation and picks up right after the end of book one and can I just scream the fact we get lots and lots of Aren!!!........oh he's amazing!! An absolutely thrilling story that will tug on all the emotions and will hook you from the very first page.
But damn women that ending!!!! 😱😱
Highly recommend for any fantasy lover looking to get lost in an amazing world.
Oh. My. God. THIS BOOK. This beautifully written book. I honestly had no idea what to fully expect when I first dove in, but the last thing I expected was to be so seen in a main character. Barnett explores the topic of healing as a survivor from SA. The non-linear road you walk, the scars people cannot see where you suffer in silence. The journey of self-love, taking back your power and accepting the love of those around you. I laughed, I cried, I felt the heartache, the loss, and the love. I cheered and mourned for these characters as if they were here beside me. I lost sleep, my kindle was glued to my hand as I read for every minute I was able to where it would not cause me injury because I was sucked so far into this story there was no escaping till the last page. If you have been sleeping on S.J. Barnett's books, what are you doing??
What can I possibly say about this book and hopefully not spoil the plot? Commanding Earth and Shadow is the second installment in the Grayshell Rising series. It is a chonky multi-pov story that introduces us to a new heirarchy and some great new characters to join our favorite Grayshell family. Bellamy is a nomad, his hierarchy long since fallen apart to chaos and is working his hardest to help bring back a better world, one not on the brink of ruin. For years he has been watching and protecting our newest leading lady, Magnolia, a witch, healer and shadow walker who is still learning to heal from her own series of traumas. She's being hunted, and nothing is as it seems.
Fresh off a victory in the battle against Adrastos, Grayshell finds themselves still unable to return home and scattered far and wide. While this may have been a win, if they can't get home soon, the world may be over. In the search for answers, for a way home, and help, Aren finds himself at a heirarchy of an old friend. Never expecting to be blinded by love when he meets a talented young witch. A witch battling her own demons to accept not only herself but the love of those around her.
I honestly thought we were heading into reverse harem territory, I was even begging for it every new chapter as we bounced from Bellamy to Aren and their devotion for Magnolia. I'd like to put the idea out of your head that it is not. Do not get caught in this spiraling thought like I did. But the pining, the TENSION, the spice! my god, this book DELIVERS.
But. S.J. .... we need to talk..because WHAT WAS THAT CLIFFHANGER!!! I need the next book, I need it like I need oxygen because I do not know how to recover from the bombs you dropped. How very dare you.
If you've read this far. In case you can't tell, I absolutely loved this book, I love this series, S.J. Is a favorite author and I would read her grocery lists. Pick up this series, you're welcome for telling you to.
Thank you S.J. Barnett for the E-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
First and foremost, if you haven’t read commanding flame and Shield, race to read it. It’s worth it, I promise.
Commanding Earth and shadow picks up where the first book ends, but the beauty of it is we get some new POV’s in the form of Aren, and two new characters as well: Magnolia and Bellamy. The change in character POV’s from August and Ally was a brilliant way to keep engagement of the story like fresh and exciting. We meet Aren in book one, so it’s incredibly interesting to get inside his head.
The story line continued wonderfully, the pace was steady, and with all the chaos in the book (you need to read it to make sense, it’s good chaos, it reads really well) but still making those personal, emotional connections between characters while everything around them is ultimately going to shit? Beautiful writing.
And the ending of this book left me an emotional WRECK that I shall not recover from until the next book is released.
"Commanding Earth and Shadow" by SJ Barnett is just amazing. I think I might actually enjoyed a sequel more than the first and I did not think that was even possible! I devoured the book in just a few days, I’m sure it helped that I had a few days to focus on it because it is a big book! So be prepared! Barnett has this incredible way of writing that makes everything so vivid. There is a mix of magic and sacrifice that feels familiar from commanding flames and shields with it still making it fresh! The new characters were fun and love able. Reading this book feels like experiencing a whole new world, and when you have read as much fantasy books as me it really hard to not feel like you have read this before. This book is one that definitely lingers! If you are on the fence about reading this book or even this series don’t be!
I got this diamond of a book as an ARC and I can't say how grateful I am because my whole life, body and soul are in absolute ruins 😭
Was I obsessed over Commander Amadeus before? Yes! Do I want him as my mate? Yes, forever and ever. And most of all was I already obsessed with the Villain? Yes! And now? I would step infront of a bus for him 😭😭
This book is filled with healing, fighting, self healing, betrayal, doubts, steadies scenes, angst, THE BEST BOOKBOYFRIENDS and allt the feels!
I think I'm going to hide under a rock until Grayshell Rising comes out because my heart has stopped working!
OH. MY. GOD. this was my most anticipated book of the year and it definitely didn’t disappoint! I loved it! The plot, the return of some of my favorite characters, the introduction of new characters and that freaking cliffhanger at the end! I swear this book made me feel all the things, sadness, love, happiness and anger! I kid you not, I almost threw my kindle a couple of times. I cannot wait for the next book to see what happens next! Please, please, go read book 1 (Commanding Flame and Shield), then immediately read book 2 (Commanding Earth and Shadow)
I am so grateful to have received this gorgeous book as an ARC. Commanding Earth and Shadow is a thrilling sequel to Commanding Flame and Shield, one of the BEST fantasy books I have ever read! Multi-P.O.V’s (all in first person), this book keeps you on the edge of your seat. The magic system, the world building, the characters … I am blown away by this amazing story.
S. J. Barnett, you are a PHENOMENAL author. Thank you for giving us Grayshell. I cannot wait for the third book!!
Let me tell ya, I am floored. This maybe even better than book one and I was obsessed with it. I fell in love with all the characters. Cried, laughed, gritted my teeth and held my breath. Usually in any kind of love triangle type situation I have one clear winner and that was not the case here. Commanding Earth and Shadow is thicc but she's oh so WORTH IT!
What a wild ride 😳 I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t this 😅 S. J. Barnett didn’t disappoint- wow what a story, the tension, the passion, the build-up. THE PLOT TWISTS. I just finished and I feel absolutely and utterly drained. Can’t wait for the next one 🙌
“Don’t allow weeds planted by broken people to suffocate the fruit you’ve worked tirelessly to grow in your garden, Mags.”
To say that I was excited to continue the story of Grayshell is an understatement. Commanding Earth and Shadow had me laughing, yelling at my Kindle, and clutching my heart the entire time. I’ll be counting down the days for Book 3 because I NEED to know what happens after that cliffhanger!!!
🛑SPOILERS AHEAD!🛑
This story picks up after their battle with Agamemnon and Adrastos. We are introduced to two new main POVs- Magnolia Green and Bellamy Blackwell. We also get to finally have a POV from our favorite Grayshellian Commander- Aren Amadeus. (Don’t worry, the Porters are still around!)
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Magnolia’s growth as a character flourished through the series. It was written in the most authentic way possible. To watch her conquer her past trauma while still making mistakes any 29 year old was wonderful to see. Some authors will make characters act far older than realistically possible, but Magnolia was written so beautifully.
Also- AREN. AMADEUS. Whew… I knew this man was going to steal my heart the moment I saw his name the POV for his first chapter. I could not get enough of his reassurance!
"Your darkness, your wounds, you victories, and strengths; they are all equally a part of you. Own. That. Sh!it. All of it."
This story blew me away! After reading Commanding Flame and Shield, I knew this story would be focused on what happened after the epic battle between Grayshell and Adrastros, but I was not prepared for to get so emotionally connected to a whole new hierarchy of characters. Each and every character read as real and the range of emotions they all demonstrated had me laughing, crying, and raging right alongside them. This story reveals more about Aren as he seeks out allies for the upcoming war. Who knew he had such a dirty mouth?! 😈 Be warned! This book ends of cliffhanger but the journey is SO worth it!
Thanks so much to SJ Barnett for sharing this book with me and humoring me with all of my reactions and videos! All opinions are my own.
Whew where to even begin! This book was absolutely amazing from start to finish! It picks up right where book 1 left off, meeting new characters in Hazelharbor, and takes you on a wild ride of trauma, grief, coming into your own, facing fears, finding love, and battling your desires. The author does a fantastic job of drawing you in and making you feel connected to the characters and story. I was on the edge of my seat, gasping and freaking out multiple times. Magnolia is such a complex and real character and readers can easily connect with her in her emotions and difficulties in life. Bellamy is a mysterious character that you want to know more about. And Aren is much more than just the Commander of Grayshell. Phenomenal follow up for this debut author and I absolutely cannot wait for book 3!
Sydne's latest book is a must-read for anyone who loves a good story filled with emotion and strong characters. As an ARC reader, I was hooked from the very first page and couldn't put it down until the very end. Sydne's writing style is addictive and she knows how to keep her readers invested in the story with every turn of the page.
Sydne has once again delivered a fantastic read that will leave you wanting more. Don't hesitate to pick up this book, you won't regret it!
This book is so good and I am in love with the characters. We get the return of our faves from be first book but meet some new and equally loved characters.
It reminds me of when I read ACOTAR and book 1 in the series is good and gets you interested but book 2 blows you away.
The spicy level is 👌🏼 so perfect but that ending will KILL you. Like NO WAY. I love a good cliffhanger and the ending left me begging for book 3 asap.
SJ Barnett is masterfully skilled with the pen. Both book one and two of this series are thoroughly enjoyable, leaving the reader wanting more. As a reader, I was easily able to fully immerse myself into the world Barnett has created without feeling bogged down by world building. The books are long, but I never felt stuck always being drawn back to the story to inhale as much as I could as fast as I could. Book three cannot come fast enough.
I loved everything about this book…well except for the ending and a few parts that made me want to throw my kindle because, OUCH, MA’AM!
CEAS was a rollercoaster from the jump and though some parts made me want to throttle the author, I loved every minute of it.
Mags is a trauma stricken witch with shadow magic and ballsy AF. I love her sass and strength and I related to her on so many levels.
Aren is…well, Aren is daddy and no one can convince me otherwise. He’s an ooey, gooey, cinnamon roll who would stab anyone who comes at his girl and I LOVE IT.
Bell? Dear sweet lord, this man. He’s just…you’re going to have to read it to find out about him because I can’t even do the put words into sentences doing about him.
The Hazelharbor Coven is a home away from home that I wish I was apart of.
This second installment in the Grayshell Rising series was absolutely Epic! I LOVED Commanding Flame and Shield. Fell in love with all the characters and their stories. When I started Commanding Earth and Shadow I was slightly taken back at first when the story was about different characters. However, I quickly fell in love with all of them too! The found family in these stories… beautiful. The love stories… my heart. The plot… jaw dropping. This gigantic book continues to build on the world from the first and brings both together in an Epic story that has me waiting not so patiently for the next book!
“The Renown have been charged with orders to locate and apprehend a prophesied witch. A healer, not yet thirty years old. Which means her soul came in the same year as The Great Commander.”
War is coming for the world. Our beloved characters from Grayshell are spread all over recruiting, planning, training, preparing. Trying to get back into the middle - which they were locked out of by Adastros.
Seven pieces of a prophecy. A race to control all of them. Healers being targeted and Grayshell and Nomads step in to protect Magnolia and her Coven in Hazelharbor. Tragedy strikes and alliances are made. Bonds develop. Guardians evolve. Love grows. Fates threaten the balance.
Alvara continues to see the strings of different futures, ever changing with individual actions. Adastros always seeming one step ahead - our hero’s struggle to gain the upper hand. Commander Aren is drawn to our Magnolia, and her many broken pieces, in a way he never has been before. What does this mean for the future…. That one wrong move, one mistake, one unfortunate event - can change everything.
The magic system and layers of this world develop in an astonishing way. Guardians, blood bonds, soul bonds, mates… we learn so much more.
“A Guardian cannot do anything that places their bonder in physical peril. If they sought a subtle takeover, it would take a great deal of tact. Their highest mission must always be protecting their bonder.”
“Soulmates are sacred. But they’re not the strongest of connections, and they’re immensely vulnerable. Even the best of mates can be rejected or manipulated, especially if one of them is entangled with other karmic debts.”
Getting to know Aren, on a soul deep level, watching his relationship evolve with Magnolia - so healing for both of them - and absolutely beautiful to read.
“I had to become the man worthy of your soul. Had to face that solitude so I might be worthy to be yours when you were finally forged… for such a time as this.”
Magnolia has lived through a lot of trauma and is trying to piece herself back together. Trying to find herself worthy of love. Worthy of her powers. Embrace who she truly is. The evolution of her character- she is one of my favorites. She made me mad, she made me cry. I read her story and felt all the emotion. So many moving pieces and stories - seeing them come together was jaw dropping. Her friendships, her built in guardians, her shadows… make her such a complex and love able character.
“You’re like… his counterweight in the world. An epic healer for a legendary warrior… it just makes sense.”
“What’s Ally say? “Some journeys have to be lived.”
And this story was absolutely an amazing journey!

I didn’t think I would like a book in the series that wasn’t about Ally and August, but this book was great! I really enjoyed how the main girl, Mags, was stuck in a love triangle, with a good guy and the bad guy!! Although it was a fleeting thought in the back of my head, I was still pleasantly surprised it was true. Very long book, and could’ve been quicker to some parts, but the spicy parts make up for it. So fun and engaging.

Aren & Magnolia might just be my new favorites! Dont get me wrong I love Alvara and August and the gang but idk Magnolias story just intrigues me more! Also Bellamy? yea we like that storyline! lol hefty book, but not without action! these books are so fun to read!
At the beginning of this book, I will not dare lie to you. I was so LOST! It didn't jump right where we left off from the first book and I was dumbfounded for a few chapters because like who is Magnolia and why are we talking about a new character with absolutely no background whatsoever?!
I will help you out. Magnolia is a healer and a shadow-walker. She has major trauma, but you will see her power and connection to the earth, and shadow becomes increasingly apparent throughout the story.
Then we have shadow daddy Aren Amadeus, who is the commander of Greyshell. He is super powerful and handsdown everyone respects him. For goodness sakes, him and his clan bid on deaths that they've made.
I refuse to spoil it for you, but these two characters have some interesting connections together, and when I tell you to keep an eye out on blood bonding....and to whom blood bonds are made with. You BEST pay attention!
I love this series so far. I do wish that the author could have given us more of an introduction in the beginning. Instead of just throwing these characters in scene...but I digress. It was still a pretty great read!
That ending had me staring at the wall for a bit, trying to process that, that was NOT BELLAMY! WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!
I have questions. The next book will be out in Sept 25...
As always thank you to Synde for sending me an arc.
Commanding Earth and Shadow is the second book in the Grayshell Rising series. This book follows Magnolia Green, a witch/healer/shadow walker from the Hazelharbor hierarchy and Bellamy Blackwell, a nomad from the dismantled hierarchy of Bellpost. We also get pov chapters from The Commander, Aren Amadeus, to add another layer to this book.
CEAS starts off right after the events of book 1 Commanding Flame and Shield but with a bit of a twist. Yes we still get to see August and Ally, but they take a bit of a backseat as we meet Magnolia and Bellamy. Bellamy saved Magnolia one night after she was attacked and has been keeping watch over her ever since. As Magnolia attempts to heal, she commits herself to helping and healing others. With the threat of war looming, Magnolia is thrust into the center of it, being hunted by things she has only ever heard about in stories. Can Bellamy continue to protect her and keep her safe or will this fight be too much even for him?
Now while things are thrown into chaos with Magnolia and Hazelharborians, Aren is trying to gather allies and find a way to get everyone he loves back home. Without any options left, he must visit an old friend from the Hazelharbor hierarchy and ask for assistance. He agrees to help protect the witches if they will help him and the Grayshellians find a way home. Will he be able to find the answers they need, or will Grayshell be locked out for the foreseeable future?
Now I’m not gonna lie and say I wasn’t a little disappointed that we weren’t continuing with Ally and August’s story especially after how CFAS ended, BUT little did I know how much Magnolia Green would embed herself into my heart. This fiery, sarcastic, stubborn, and shattered soul, who has more strength inside of her than she knows made me want to take her into my arms and protect her but also let her realize her own power. Her story is the same as many(check TW) and the path she is walks towards healing is full of missteps, blind corners, pain and love. Healing from trauma is not something that is obvious to the rest of the world and not everyone will understand why Magnolia reacts and deals with situations the way she does, but those that do, will carry Magnolia with them, using her strength as inspiration. Having loved ones around to support her, like her fellow witches, Bellamy and some of the Grayshellians, leads to some very raw, very authentic emotions. Synde does a heartbreakingly beautiful job of making the reader FEEL EVERY EMOTION and parts of you will heal just like Magnolia begins to.
Much like CFAS the character development in these books are top tier. The side characters don’t feel like side characters because the stories would be severely lacking without them. Every single character plays an important role in feeling the connections and building on the attachments that develop. Synde is brilliant with the way she layers and gives depth to each and every one. The found families in this series are amongst some of my favourite and adding another hierarchy to my love for Grayshell is just as terrifying as it is amazing because if anything happens to them I will not forgive you Sydne.
ALRIGHT…..first I will start by saying HOW FREAKING DARE YOU SYDNE?!?!?! The level of cliffhanger on this one is EXTREMELY HIGH. I was sent reeling and spiralling and wanting to go back and reread IMMEDIATELY. I need to find answers and the fact that I will have to wait months is DEVASTATING. I’m second guessing every little interaction and conversation to make it make sense. Why did you make me feel like this and then go and DO THAT TO ME?!?! All I know is that book 3 better give me some answers and not the painful kind.
I am not ok!! This books is a roller coaster of epic proportions. Sj’s writing is amazing. She really knows how to put enough description to give you want you need without making it longer than necessary. This is a THICK book but didn’t feel long honestly I need more because like I said before I am not ok!!!
Wow. Wow, wow & wow. Holy moly. I literally just put this book down and wish I could pick up the next! I'll be counting down the days once I hear it's coming out! This book is so well written, truly funny, spicy 🌶️, shocking in the best way and I can't get enough of the characters!
Book Review: S.J. Barnett – Commanding Earth and Shadow (Grayshell Rising #2) Thank you to the author for my gifted ARC of this brilliant book.
“You are many things; but powerless is certainly not one of them.”
That quote isn’t just beautiful — it’s the foundation of Magnolia Green’s entire arc, and the heartbeat of this book. Commanding Earth and Shadow doesn’t whisper its power; it shouts it with every chapter, every gut-punch twist, every unraveling truth. This is the kind of sequel that doesn’t just pick up where the first book left off — it dares you to question everything you thought you understood about this world, and about yourself.
When I first opened this book, I expected magic, tension, high-stakes war, and heartache. I got all of that. But what I didn’t expect was to see myself — or pieces of myself — inside a character like Magnolia. Her self-doubt, her trauma responses, the way she second-guesses every move, every relationship, every bit of goodness sent her way — it’s brutal, and it’s honest. Watching her try to build herself back up after being torn down again and again? That was the emotional core of this book, and it hit like a freight train.
Bellamy Blackwell is a standout. Quiet loyalty, gruff protectiveness, and a hidden well of pain — he sees Magnolia in a way she can’t even see herself. Their dynamic is thick with tension and tenderness, the kind of bond built not on fireworks but on earned trust. And then there’s Aren Amadeus. The Commander. The emotional axis of Grayshell. His POVs wrecked me. Aren is what happens when a man who’s only ever known war, loss, and command is finally confronted with softness — and has no idea what to do with it. His love for Magnolia is the kind that builds slowly and burns hot — reverent, careful, fierce. I didn’t stand a chance.
There’s this feeling when you read something that’s doing more than just telling a story — when it’s rebuilding your emotional architecture while you’re reading it. That’s what Commanding Earth and Shadow does. The spice is a slow build and when it hits, it’s well-earned. It doesn’t rush. It simmers. It hurts in the best way. It’s less about shock and more about intimacy — the kind of intimacy that feels too real to be fictional.
The writing is sharp, intentional, and full of soul. Barnett doesn’t pad her pages with fluff. Every line matters. Every conversation has weight. And the multi-POV? Masterfully handled. This isn’t just Magnolia’s story. It’s Bellamy’s quiet grief. It’s Aren’s buried vulnerability. It’s the trauma of a whole world on the brink of war — and the hope that maybe, just maybe, healing is still possible.
The action is relentless. There’s no sag in the middle, no filler masquerading as plot. Everything escalates — emotionally, politically, magically. The new hierarchy, the magic system expansion, the way the Middle’s closed gates ripple through every decision made by every character — it’s all so tightly constructed. This world feels lived in. And right when you think you know the shape of the story, the author shifts it under your feet and leaves you gasping.
And let’s talk about the cliffhanger. No spoilers, but… S.J. Barnett, what was that? That wasn’t an ending. That was a hit-and-run. It wasn’t just a twist — it was emotional sabotage. I stared at my screen like I could force the next chapter into existence by sheer will. The audacity. The precision. The cruelty. I loved it. I hated it. I need more. Now.
This isn’t just a fantasy book. It’s a story about what it takes to survive when survival feels impossible. It’s about love that doesn’t fix you, but sees you. It’s about building something beautiful out of broken pieces. And it’s also, let’s be honest, about hot, competent, emotionally intelligent men with swords and trauma. Which is a genre of its own, and Barnett absolutely nails it.
Commanding Earth and Shadow is a perfect sequel. Bigger in scope. Heavier in emotional weight. Sharper in character development. Bolder in its themes.
