The police didn't understand the danger, but she did. Her father had always been abusive, but now, with a ten million dollar Thoroughbred farm on the line, and a powerful bookie leaning on him, her father had become out of control. But how do you get away and take a world famous stallion with you? Carrie was getting desperate when a handsome and honorable but thoroughly cynical rodeo cowboy from Wyoming happened to show up with a horse trailer. He didn't ride a white horse, but he was definitely a knight in shining armor.

He'll protect her from the mob, but can she survive falling in love with a bull rider?

I really liked this Jaclyn Hawkes book. Main reason? Good, wholesome, Cowboys. :) I loved the two rodeo cowboys who were the "Knights in Shining Armor" in the story. They kind of reminded me of Layne Frost and Tuff Hedeman...but in a clean cut, clean mouthed, high standard boys kind of way! :) I love rodeo's and reading about rodeo's BUT it's hard to find books that have that and don't make the cowboys "scuzzy"(I don't even know if that's a word;)lol...but you know what I mean...the foul mouthed, drinking, any girl will do, type guys....therefore, unless I KNOW that the book is safe, I don't read them. This book was so fun because where it's an LDS fiction I knew I could trust it, even though it involved Rodeo. There were some problems with the writing though...such as confusing changes of point of view among a few other small things. (not that I could do better.:)..but all in all I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to read more like it. :)

This isn't the first book I have read by this author, Jaclyn Hawkes but it is definitely my favorite. I'm thinking it was the good western feel combined with two sexy, yet honorable men and that build up of romance. Great combination there.

Carrie is a take control kind of girl. She knows what she has to do and finds a way to do it. I like Carrie's support group, the farm hands who help and also Carrie's friend at the restaurant. Even though Carrie is a tough girl with courage, she needs help. I liked that her vulnerable side came through as well.

I think I have some cowboy love in this book! Slade is everything hero-ish. Handsome, strong, kind, tough. Yup, very nice. Very, very nice.

The bad guys were bad, there was tension and suspense. This book had all the makings of a good romantic western suspense. And it's clean. That makes me happy.

I got this book and read it way before I should have for this review. I just couldn't help myself. I knew it would be in my pleasure zone for reading and well, I wanted to read it. I've had to wait a long time to actually post my review. :) I hear this is the first book in the Rockland Ranch series and I'll be looking forward to the following books!

My thanks to the publisher and author for allowing me to read and review this book.

This was a fun LDS read. I really got into it when Carrie takes off with Slade and Rossen. I've always had a thing for cowboys (hard-working men, who are charming, and are built with lean muscles) and these two are gentlemen besides. The characters were great and I loved Rossen's family.

There is quite a lot going on between Carrie's safety, the rodeos, and the traveling. I also loved the scenery and especially Slade's house, which is basically my dream house. :) The romance was really sweet, but also realistic for the situation.

I did feel it was a little too preachy and that the way those who weren't members of the church just ate everything up was unrealistic. It was just too easy and didn't feel real to me. It was also dramatic at parts, but it is a happily-ever-after kind of tale. Due to the religious content, I would recommend this only to members of the church.

Overall, it was an enjoyable, even if not realistic, read.

Carrie is in a dangerous situation, her father is trying to use her inheritance to pay off gambling debts. He is wrapped up with some dangerous people and will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

Her friend sees an ideal situation, two rodeo cowboys have stopped in the diner where she works, Carrie could go with them and cook for them while they are on the road. Carries father wouldn't know where she is and it will keep Carrie and her valuable stallion safe.

Rossen and Slade are good men, willing to help out and protect Carrie, who takes the name Isabel to guard her identity.

This was a fun book for me to read. I enjoyed the storytelling and romance that ensues between Isabel and Slade. They needed each other to find peace and happiness.

This book has an LDS background. The religion is not the prominent part of the story. It is a love story of two people finding each other and at the same time finding a love and trust in God.

I would have given this more stars if it weren’t for the ending. I can’t get over the fact that Slade knew she was in extreme danger, saw her get knocked down while he was waiting for his bull ride, and THEN said, “it’s only 8 seconds and could mean the all around cowboy title for me, I’m sure her psycho dad won’t kill her during those 8 seconds, she can wait.” I could not believe, with the danger she was facing that he saw with his own eyes she was in, that he put his bull ride first 🤦🏻‍♀️ To me it was absurd. I’ve read multiple books by Jaclyn Hawkes now and really enjoy her writing, but this ending just about ruined this book for me.

A great cowboy love story!

I loved how real the characters were. The cowboy stuff was authentic and everything was so real and believable. The romance was sweet and the religion was soft and natural, not preachy. The bad guys were very scary and I loved the happy ending!

This author does make her books interesting from the start. An abusive father, a ten million dollar Thoroughbred farm and Carrie needs to get away and fast.

A real rodeo page turner

Loved that it was exciting enough I wanted to keep turning pages and not put it down. Should be listed as inspirational if not already as informative on beginners level of Morman religion. Looking forward to reading more of Rockland Ranch Series!

Peace River is the first book in the Rockland Ranch series by Jaclyn M. Hawkes. The story is about the struggle of a young girl who has an abusive, alcoholic father with a gambling addiction. Carrie is an heiress to her grandfather’s multi- million dollar thoroughbred farm and is afraid her father will try to take everything from her. The following passage from the book will give the reader an insight into the religious aspect and possibly the inspiration for the title. "Your grandfather wanted this farm to be in both our names. He died trusting it would be that way, and that's the way it will stay. They wouldn't let us take it out of your name legally anyway. Come. Dry your tears and we'll figure something out. The Good Lord is in His heaven, and He is in control. Remember His promise in Isaiah, 'And I will extend peace to her like a river.' Have faith.
The police do not understand the danger she is in, Carrie’s love of her horse and fear of her father drive her away from the farm. Carrie and her world famous stallion end up travelling with two Rodeo cowboys and she falls in love with one of them.
There is a religious theme throughout the story. Readers who are not particularly religious may find this annoying. Those comfortable with the Latter-day Saint faith will appreciate the religious part of the book. But the strong story line and characters keeps one involved and turning the pages. There is lots of action, adventure, and romance to keep most readers turning the pages.
I found Ms. Hawkes way of developing the characters relationships refreshing. She leads us along the path of friendship and respect to love and commitment in a sensitive way. At the same time, Jaclyn keeps us on track with a sense of everyday realism. I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more from the series. I would definitely recommend this book for readers who prefer romance with action and a little danger.

It is important to know that this is a LDS contemporary western romance so if you don't like mention of religion in your novels you shouldn't read this book.

It starts with Carrie in a dangerous situation because her father, who she rarely sees, is trying to get her inheritance and valuable horse to pay off his gambling debts. He is involved with some very dangerous people and will anything to get what he wants.

Carrie's friend comes up with a plan to get her away from the area (and her father). She had met two rodeo cowboys when they came into the diner where she works and finds out that they would like someone to come on the road with them to cook while they travel to each rodeo. Carrie's friend thinks Carrie could do this which would take her away, so that Carrie's father wouldn't know where she is and it will keep Carrie and her valuable stallion safe. Carrie's friend sees that Rossen and Slade are good men and have a horse trailer so they would be perfect in helping Carrie escape.

I loved Carrie and that she was so capable, almost too capable. She stays strong even with people chasing her which I really liked. Slade and Rossen really where fantastic characters. They helped everyone that needed it and were very protective of Carrie. Rossen's family were great and helped the story feel real.

The details about the rodeos and horseback riding made it clear that the author has experience with riding and horses in general. It was nice to see accurate descriptions in this area.

Even though I expected the story to include religion and talk of God because it is a christian romance, I think the author went too far with it. There were so many references to the gospel that I felt like it was a sales pitch for this type of religion making it unbelievable in the story.

If you like western christian romances, you will love Peace River but I want to stress that because of the religious content, I would recommend this only to members of the church.

First I want to make readers aware that this is a LDS contemporary romance. So if religious aspects or mentions are unappealing to you then don't read this book. I felt that the religious aspect was well written and it added another dimension to the characters. Being a Christian myself I felt it made the characters more realistic to me and think that it doesn't detract from the overall story, but adds to the theme of the book.

This book had a lot of things I enjoyed. I read it on a plane ride where I was delayed and had to sit on the tarmac for over and hour. It was the perfect escape from the diaper smelling plane I was stuck on. I loved horses and enjoyed reading about the cowboys and horse events. Being a horse back rider I could tell immediately that Jaclyn Hawkes was also a rider. She was so realistic when writing about the experience of traveling to horse shows and caring for horses.

I loved Carrie and could see why she had so many loyal friends. Despite the many things that go wrong for her she had this quiet personal strength that I really admired. I felt that she was a wonderful example of persevering through life and the trials we are given.

The reason Peace River lost a star for me is I couldn't quite accept that depiction of the police. While I know that sometimes police forces don't intervene when called upon, it seemed to me that I couldn't understand why they weren't getting involved here and if that was realistic or not. I also found it strange that she mostly stayed in Carrie's perspective, but occasionally would throw in another point of view and it wasn't always a smooth transition.

Overall if you want a enjoyable clean romance that has horses, hot men, and religious tones take a leap of faith and give Peace River a chance.

I enjoyed reading Above Rubies the other day and went right out and bought Peace River yesterday and read it. I really like the Rockland Ranch Series and hope more books are coming soon in it. It has awesome characters and relationships, some rodeo cowboy's,
some bad guys, their is romance and action. Some LDS beliefs mentioned. Left me feeling good when it was through.

Carrie is now half owner of a Racing farm in California and owns a famous stallion that is worth millions after her grandfather died a couple of months ago. Her father lives on a house on the ranch that he now owns after her mother died six months ago. Her father abused her mother. Carrie when she was twelve moved herself to her grandfather's house. Her father wants her to marry a distant relative and she hears him make plans that he would kill the other owner Eli that was more of a father to her. He also planned to steal the famous race horse.

Carrie decided for everyone sake she needed to leave and take the horse with her. She was praying for help and her friend was a waitress when two rodeo cowboys were eating at the café while they waited for trailer to be fixed. Anna felt that Carrie could be safe cooking for the two cowboys and going to all the rodeos. Anna also gave Carrie a different name.

It took a lot of trust for Carrie to go with two strangers and stay with them in their trailer. Carrie had never been to a rodeo.

I have only read two of Jaclyn Hawkes books but I loved both of them and will try more of her books in the future. They are clean, fun, lots of drama too.

This was a heart-warming, exceptionally well-told story that I found to be simply enchanting. The main characters embraced a strong moralistic belief system and treated each other respectfully. It was poignant and refreshing to this sometimes jaded reader. I believed in the sincerity of their beliefs even though my core beliefs are not the same. There is a lot of excitement and action that kept me reading long past my usual bedtime.

There are a couple of places that got a bit too preachy for me. I skimmed past those places rapidly so I could get back to the main story. It was not too much of a distraction or bother to me because it meshed satisfactorily with the overall storyline; it was just not something that I wished to spend time on. There was also a bit of LDS religious history that I found mildly interesting as I am already familiar with much of it. It was not overbearing and not overly lengthy - again, I was anxious to return to the main story, so I barely paid attention there. The author's skill at placing sympathetic characters into non-traditional settings and her obvious extensive knowledge and love of horses, rodeos, and dare-devil bull-riders gave this reader a front-row seat and tantalizing glimpse into that difficult, but personally challenging lifestyle. Others may well love this story all the more for its religious (LDS) undertones, but the action, suspense, and character grit was the draw for me.

This book was given to me by the author in return for my honest review.

Jaclyn M. Hawkes is kind of a new author for me and I am LOVING her books!

Carrie needs to get away from her current situation and she need to get away NOW!

Only problem...she also needs to take her very famous horse with her...But how?

Her prayers are answered when two rodeo cowboys want to hire a cook that will go on the road with them.

Happy for the first time in a very long time, Carrie is falling in love with her new life AND one of the very handsome cowboys she now lives with in a very tiny trailer...but all have promised to keep the relationship on a professional level.

How can Carrie move forward with her past still hanging over her?

A little bit of mystery...
A little bit of suspense...
A little bit of romance...
A little bit of country...
A whole lot of FUN FUN reading!

I will definitely be reading more from Jaclyn M. Hawkes!

I loved this book. This is the first book in the Rockland series and I can't wait to read the others. I found myself feeling like I was living the story - on the rodeo circuit, having fun, and wishing I lived in Wyoming with all the beautiful scenery she describes. The chapter that had the final confrontation with "Judd" left me on the edge of my seat with suspense - it was great. This book reminded me of the movie "8 Seconds". There is some mention of LDS beliefs which made it even better for me to read because I am a "Mormon". It was a good, clean, moral story that was upbeat, funny, serious and romantic - just enough mix that made the story great.

I was so excited when I was offered to read this book before it came out! I have loved all of the Jaclyn Hawkes books I've read. I really enjoyed this book. The story was engaging, and I loved the characters. Carrie seemed so real! There was plenty of action, adventure and danger to keep me guessing just how everything was going to turn out. I didn't want to put it down until I finished! Jaclyn Hawkes is one of my favorite LDS romance authors. You really can't go wrong with any of her books that you pick up!

Good story, but not as good as some of her others. This tells Slade and Isabel’s stories. I really liked the characters, but found the plot didn’t intrigue me as much as some of her other ones. I was happy for the characters, but not spellbound…content, but not awestruck. I don’t know why. Maybe it was a little too predictable. I’m not sure. I still enjoyed it. The setting, characters, and plot still pulled me along for an enjoyable ride. I swear I could smell the sage as Isabel smelled it for the first time and felt some of her peace she had been yearning for.

I really liked this book. A young lady's life is in danger from her father. He wants to force her to marry his nephew so that her father can take over the ownership of the horse ranch she is part owner in. She runs away with a very valuable race horse that belongs to her. She meets up with two rodeo cowboys and travels with them. Her father eventually finds her. It is a really good story. My daughter also liked it. It is the first in a series.

What an awesome, clean romance. I loved the religious side immensely as well. To read about 2 people so in love with each other & so trusting in our Heavenly Father's plan for us was great. I look forward to reading more by this wonderful author.

First, I had no clue this was an LSD romance and it felt rather out of left field after reading the blurb. The story starts off with nothing about it then half way in starts hammering you with it. Not my choice, not enough about the horses and the drama from why she ran in the first place.

I loved this book. Very clean, suspenseful, and romantic. Carrie finds out her father is planning to take her ranch, horses, and lock her away. She runs away with two cowboys she doesn't know, who are doing the rodeo circuit. Well written, and fun. LDS theme.I"d let my teen daughter read this.

A crazy adventure story laced with danger and deception. The characters of Slade and Isabel were so easy to love. They were both a little wounded looking for someone to trust in and luckily found each other. The rodeo circuit part of the story was so interesting and the romance was darling!

I'm not entirely sure how it happened, but I read the 2nd in this series before the first. Reading this was fun for me because the whole time I was thinking of the end results in book 2! Fun, quick read.

It's always refreshing to have a wholesome story! It's a little bit predictable, but sometimes that is nice. Characters were engaging. The elements of LDS culture that are incorporated into the story were enjoyable. I'd read this author again.

I actually liked the story but the editing should have been much better. The cover graphics are not well done but it was from the library and well used for being only a couple of years old, so I assume other readers like it as well. If not for the poor editing, I would give it a higher rating.

Good reading

If you like cowboys and rodeos this is the book. Throw in the romance and it's a great read. While the religious beliefs are different than mine somewhat the book still has a great spiritual side to it
