Happiness Came With a Cat-New Edition: The true story of how I nearly died of a broken heart, was suicidal, then learned from my cat to be truly happy.
Can the cat she never wanted; teach her the lessons she never knew she needed?
It was not love at first sight for Jinx and Cynthia. The long-haired, dandruff-ridden creature wasn’t Cynthia’s dream for a new family pet. And Jinx was equally unimpressed with her. Jinx’s arrival marked a dramatic turning point in Cynthia’s life. Soon after, she endured a devastating loss and battled grief, loneliness, and depression. Throughout the turmoil, Cynthia and Jinx progressed from sparring partners, to reluctant roommates, to friends. When Cynthia finally decided to take her life back, she brought Jinx along for the ride. Side by side, they weathered all the excitement, disappointment, mishaps, and adventures that come with finding happiness and redefining your life. Through it all, Jinx was an unexpected source of comfort, affection, and valuable life lessons. Because sometimes the thing you most need shows up in the way you least expect.
As a cat owner this book just resonated with me. Her daughter wanted a cat after their other one passed away, she did as well but just not the one her daughter chose. At the time of coming into their lives, the cat and woman do their best to avoid each other. After all cats have personalities too and we can't expect cats to warm up to us as soon as they meet us. From a broken-down romantic relationship to finding true happiness her cat is with her the whole way. Starting out with the cat and the author not liking each other to tolerating each other to not wanting to be without each other we see such progression in the relationship. Each chapter is short and easy to get through but yet there is a simple truth to the life lessons the cat teaches along the way. Cats are very good judges of character. I very much enjoyed taking this journey with the cat owner and her cat. It is a heartwarming and enjoyable read. I recommend this nonfiction book by this new to me author.
Pub Date 11 Oct 2022 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Lesson number one learned; cats are better than people. 🦄🦄🦄 Happiness Came With A Cat is a book by Cynthia Star talking about her life journey from brokenness to happiness all because of her cat, Mr. Jinx, who she never wanted but ended up needing. This was a very unique way of looking at events in life that stronger people because while the title may seem ridiculous to some people, when you read the book, it's not only heartwarming but humorous at times.
This memoir & self-help book rolled into one is a quick read and while there are instances where you feel remorse for what the author went through, the way she pushes forward to make things better for herself (even if it is through the support of a cat) shows the resilience she has. The transformation she goes through because of her emotional & mental wellbeing is clearly visible by the end and shows that if things might seem difficult initially, everything works out.
As someone who was once just like her and hated cats until I met my very own Mr. Jinx (Taffy), there are so many ways I can understand the author's point of view, because Taffy was my support system during the pandemic.
Overall, I absolutely enjoyed this book and not only would I recommend it to anyone who likes a good nonfiction book about personal growth and transformation, but also to readers out there who are cat people. 🦄🦄🦄 Rated 8/10 Melina L.
Life is funny. The longer I live, the more serendipitous it seems.

"Happiness Came With A Cat" (New Edition) by Cynthia Star is a memoir and self-help book that explores the author's profound relationship with her cat, Mr. Jinx. Initially reluctant to have a cat, Cynthia discovers that Mr. Jinx becomes the best thing that ever happened to her. While their relationship had a rocky start, cat owners (like myself) understand the unique bond between a cat and its human, and the author's unexpected connection with Mr. Jinx surprised her.
Cynthia's journey has been filled with challenges, and although the book provides insight into her emotional and mental well-being, it's hard to fully comprehend the depth of her experiences. Nonetheless, the author skillfully tugs at our heartstrings and keeps us engaged, not only to witness the eventual resolution of her struggles (because everyone deserves a life free from turmoil) but also because her story, intertwined with Mr. Jinx, offers a fresh perspective on personal growth.
In this new edition, readers are granted a more profound understanding of Cynthia's past and the hurdles she had to overcome. Having read the previous version in 2022, almost a year ago, I still remember the core moments that remain present in the new edition, albeit now infused with even more emotional intensity. This book is a must-read for those who enjoy non-fiction works that provide self-help insights, utilizing the author's personal development journey as a powerful guide.
Cats are truly remarkable creatures with a wide range of characteristics - they can be stylish, affectionate, hunters, and more. They have a special way of winning us over and making us feel like their own. In fact, they can even be good teachers, bringing joy and happiness into our lives in various ways.
This book tells the story of the author's journey from sadness to happiness, and how her cat, Mr. Jinx, helped her overcome her challenges along the way. At first, the author was not particularly impressed by Mr. Jinx, but eventually, her daughter convinced her to adopt him, filling the void left by the loss of their previous cat.
In the course of his teachings, Mr. Jinx taught Cynthia all sorts of things that seemed like philosophy, such as cats are smarter and stronger than people, hate can become love, you can change your life if you don't like it, and cats can't be controlled. Each page of the book shows the author winning her battles and undergoing a wonderful transformation. She is grateful for Mr. Jinx's silent guidance and wisdom.
As the author notes, "cats might not feel love in the same way as humans, but they can form strong bonds with their owners." In my experience, cats express their love in their own unique way, and as their guardians and parents, we can understand and interpret their emotions.
Overall, this is a must-read story for anyone who loves cats or is seeking a heartwarming tale of overcoming obstacles.

OK, so first off an unimportant spoiler. The cat doesn't die. So, anyone who avoids books about animals because of that...you're safe.
The book follows the author, a middle aged woman going through a lot of change. Divorce, moving across the country, dating, trying to find a career she feels good about...it's a lot. And each chapter she focuses on a lesson learned from that time, and how her cat helped her learn those lessons. Ultimately, some chapters were a lot better than others. The book had some real ups and downs. Some were beautifully crafted and the cat/life parallel is strong and entertaining. In others it's a stretch. I enjoyed reading it though, the good outweighed the bad.
One thing I struggled with was empathizing with the author. She would have a whole chapter about her lessons learned and her growth towards respecting herself (awesome!)…and in the very next chapter she would be dating some loser who was obviously taking advantage of her. What? Where did those lessons go? Get it together, girl. I think some editing to either reorder the chapters or elaborate on her stages of growth would have been beneficial.
I had a Jinx in my life. Except mine was a canine: the ex chose him for adoption, and then left him behind when he moved out a year later. Mickey was a challenge, not one I would have ever chosen for myself and my daughter (sound familiar if you've read this book?), but he ended up becoming a heart-dog.
I got a lot out of the first half of this book -- I could relate to some of Cynthia's challenges. I felt that the middle dragged (seven roommates and Mr. Adventure). I wanted to reach through the pages and shake her! There were quite a few excellent quotes that I highlighted throughout.

It's a super simple easy to read. I like the little short stories. For someone who has a hard time focusing for long periods, this was a nice short read to get you going. It seemed more like you're reading through an organized journal. Some concepts seemed a little out there that involved a cat for a lesson, but all the same, she felt that the cat was involved in her learning and she's allowed to feel that way. 👍
I can't resist to reading a book with a cat on the cover and this one was compelling and made me think. Each cat is a universe you have to explore but you also have to learn how to contact them. The story of Cynthia and Jinx is a story of learning to get in touch and learning from out cat. It's well written and I liked it. Recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
I am a cat person, and in my 50’s, and appreciate a good self help book. However, I found Star’s story difficult to follow at times, and either too detailed or not enough. Tough moments were skimmed over, while situations of less importance were given more attention. Ultimately, the book is about perseverance and resilience, for the author and her cat. The book has potential for those who need some encouragement if going through tough times like a divorce, moving, losing a job, etc. It needs more editing though, to help the flow and appropriate emphasis.
I received a copy through NetGalley and have written an objective review.
Being a cat person I enjoyed reading this book. I foster kittens so I appreciate anyone who adopts a cat who needs a home. The author met many challenges in her life and in middle age starts over on a path to find a way out of an unhappy marriage and stressful job. She did this all with Mr Jinx by her side. Jinx is a special cat and was a constant companion thru her journey. The author shares her ups and downs and her positive attitude to keep moving forward is inspiring. She and Jinx make a great team. Thanks Goodreads and author Cynthia Star for the free book. I enjoyed it!
Ah what a sweet, wholesome, novella! What a great little read for an afternoon. The real cat lovers will get this entirely! I just wish it was longer!!! Thanks to NetGalley for this 3.5 from me
I was gifted this book kindly by the author on Net Galley in the same week my cat died . It turned out to be a great way for me to remember all the behaviors and lovely aspects of our cats. Mr. Jinx comes into the authors life and becomes her emotional support and best friend after the author suffered the loss of her husband by divorce and suffered from depression and a eating disorder. I admit i thought the cat over the husband was the best choice for the author and Mr. Jinx proved his worth to her in his life many times over. He is a amazing cat very much in tune with his human. I enjoyed the way the chapters related to our cats and how they save our lives and change us for the better. A excellent must read for all cat lovers. Well done to the author. I highly recommend this book for all cat lovers.

This is a nice, quick story of how a cat helped the author go through life's ups and downs. Each chapter has a "life lesson" that the cat teaches the author.
Cynthia adopted Jinx from the pound and little did she know he would see her through some of thr most difficult times in her life.
I enjoyed this short story but I felt like Jinx was a side character and not the reason for the book. I felt sorry for Jinx at times living in situations when he was chased by dogs in his own house. Happy they settled in the end and he has good place to stay were he is safe. Kitties are wonderful and they do bring so much joy and unconditional love to our lives.
I received an ARC from Book Sirens in exchange for an honest review.
I love that Cynthia manages to tie her cat to every life lesson she's learned. There's such a consistent hopefulness to her writing, despite her circumstances. She speaks to her reader like a friend, who is also trying to find themselves. A must read for cat lovers everywhere. ❤️
Clearly, some people truly enjoyed reading this book, but unfortunately it wasn't my cup of tea. It seemed to be a surface treatment of some really traumatic events the author went through, and though the cat was referenced both in the title and the chapter headings as having taught life lessons, he seemed to be a rather minor character in the story. No doubt, the cat served as a salve to the author's wounded heart from time to time, but there seemed to be little connection between most of the "lessons" referenced in the chapter headings and the stories related about him in those chapters. A good editor could have helped tighten that up. Important, I think because there are so many books out there with lessons learned from pets. I'm sorry I can't recommend this one above the others.
Having said that, I found the author to be a refreshing voice with resolve & resilience (though I suspect that a lot of anguish in between got rather glossed over). There is no doubt that she had a strong bond with her big fluffy cat. (I count myself as another person who trusts my own cats' judgment of character.)
I understand that she is a children's book author. And I just found out today that my nephew and his wife are expecting their first child. A good excuse to seek out that refreshing voice in the children's book section when I shop for that new arrival.
The book "Happiness Came With a Cat" is a real-life story about how the author's life changed for the better when she adopted Mr Jinx the cat. The author discusses her struggles with grief, loss, and an eating disorder, and how Mr Jinx brought a sense of comfort into her life. The chapters are organized into lessons, such as "cats are better than people," which is a nice way of dividing the book. This book is a great read for cat lovers and those interested in real-life stories.
Cynthia Star's Happiness Came With a Cat: My Journey from Brokenness to Happiness, and the Life Lessons My Cat Taught Me is an adorable short book about her journey with the cat her daughter wanted, Mr. Jinx. It's basically an explanation of the insights she gained while first cat-sitting, then owning Mr. Jinx.
As the owner of a difficult cat, I found Ms. Star's insights to be spot on. My difficult cat is now 19, and beginning to feel her age. I enjoyed very much the similarity between insights I've gotten from Kitt and the several cats who preceded her in my home.
Anyway, when Ms. Star gets a cat for her daughter, her life implodes from several directions. As anyone who owns (or is owned by) a cat can tell you, they are the best therapists. And Ms. Star is clearly a keen observer of feline behavior, and very capable of extrapolating how her observations of Mr. Jinx's behavior is relevant in living her life.
I definitely recommend this book for cat lovers and even those who might be cat lovers if the right cat came along. I also recommend it for folks who are afraid of cats, because it shows how compatible with humans cats can be. I note that I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Princess Fuzzypants here: I enjoyed reading this book about Cynthia and Jinx- or Mr. Jinx to his friends. When her daughter fell in love with the bedraggled cat at the shelter, Cynthia resisted. Of course, one of the lessons she quickly learned is with kitties, resistance is futile. Just ask my humans.
Circumstances turned her daughter’s unwanted cat into her best friend and companion when Mr. Jinx came to live with her as her furever family. Note that I did not say furever home. Cynthia lived a nomadic life after leaving Wyoming for the South-West, first Arizona and then New Mexico. Through thick and through thin and many a trauma for both, the two have been steadfast friends. In that time, Jinx has taught her many lessons. We kitties are excellent instructors if our humans will but learn from us. We will teach the meaning of life and love and so many other things.
The two are in a good place right now. My hope is that there are many good years together for them before Jinx must leave for The Bridge. One thing for certain. He will be waiting for her patiently until it is her time to join him. Love is furever.
Cynthia and her daughter go to a shelter to get another cat. Cynthia didn’t want the cat that her daughter wanted but she gave in. Their cat had passed away and they missed having a cat but her husband didn’t.want a cat so he packed up and left when they came home with one. They decided the cat’s name would be Jinx. Jinx didn’t get along with Cynthia — just with her daughter. When her daughter went off to college, Jinx and Cynthia are living with each other. When Jinx becomes her permanent cat, Cynthia watches episodes of Jackson Galaxy to learn how to get along better Jinx. As she moves on her life, Jinx gives her lessons that help her deal with life.
It’s a wonderful memoir of Cynthia’s life with her cat Jinx. I enjoyed her fallacies with Jinx and proud of her to make Jinx’s life good. It’s a heartwarming experience to read this. If you are a cat lover, you definitely should read it. Even if you aren’t a cat lover, read it for the life lessons.
Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review or any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.
The author absolutely did not want Mr. Jinx. However, her daughter insisted. And Mr. Jinx became the companion that Cynthia needed.
This book is a series of stories and experiences that show the benefit of having an animal by your side, the lessons that you can learn, and the overall well-being that can be achieved by having that additional companion.
This was occasionally a difficult read, but with humor thrown into the mix. It was easy to imagine the antics that Mr. Jinx caused, especially if/when he didn't like somebody. At the same time, I experienced the same comfort of memories of my own pets as Mr. Jinx, in his own way, brought comfort to Cynthia.
Happiness Came with a Cat by Cynthia Star is a deceptively slim memoir, deceptive because while it is not a lengthy book it picks an emotional wallop. The author is experiencing multiple transitions in her life; her children are leaving home, her second marriage is failing, and her attempt at changing careers does not go well. In the following years she relates the events in her life, and finds that so many of the lessons she learns are also illustrated in her cat's behavior and actions. Each chapter describes particular events with the lesson learned.
Favorite elements: * the tales of Mr. Jinx's hijinks * the author's honest and willingness to subject herself to tough introspection Not as enjoyable: * at times it was difficult to relate to the events simply because my life's trajectory has been so different, but that's just me and has nothing to do with the quality or worth of the book
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Goodreads Giveaways program and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
First things first, I agree with the title. Happiness does indeed came with a cat, as a cat parent myself. I empathized with the situations that happened here and the author's emotional journey, however, the actual writing is very simplistic and too boring for me personally. I find myself relying to much on my imagination to what the author's situation feels like when, for example (that happened in this book), her children are all grown up and she don't feel like they don't have purpose anymore, but that's my problem with it. The narration was too flat for me to be able to get attached to the story being presented and have emotions about it. I constantly need to imagine for myself what the situation or the experience feels like because the actual writing on page doesn't provide that. The writing style isn't just for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher as well as the author for this ARC. #NetGalley #HappinessCameWithACat #CynthiaStar #IndependentPublisher
This was a sweet one. Those of us who have been owned by a cat (or other pet for that matter), can all relate. In this book, we are introduced to Mr. Jinx the cat through his family, Cynthia and her daughter, Calli. Jinx wasn’t her first choice of cat but her daughter insisted. It was a rough start but Jinx helped Cynthia go from rock bottom to happiness. This book was very sweet and made me hug my cat. Not difficult as he was on my lap while I read. This novella was a pleasant way to spend an evening. Everyone who has, does, or ever will love a cat will benefit from this quick read. I especially loved how Ms. Star described Mr. Jinx’s less than stellar start as a family member. She ended up helping them both by improving her own behavior. Something every pet owner should do. Good for her!
Like most of us, Cynthia Star has suffered many struggles. Worst of all during these times she suffered alone. That loneliness began with a husband who could not share his feelings. He would lock up and lock in and could do it for long periods of time. Next, is that ugly beast called empty nest. Oh, it is one of those painful parts of life. Thankfully Brandie, her daughter, gives her a special gift. It is a cat named Jinx. He is loyal and has many other good traits.
"Happiness Came With A Cat" by Cynthia Star is a reminder that you never know where help will come from in a given day. Some times it comes from the least expected person, place or thing. She also took up Yoga. Some of us still think Yoga is deeply mysterious like an unexplored cave. The way Cynthia Star describes meditation is very nice, almost friendly. There is hope for those tight, tense feelings. Her words are an invitation and plea for the hurting not to give up. The book is very encouraging.
I adore cats, and this book is such a sweet and charming look at life with a cat and the lessons In life that can bring with it. Quite profound actually and I could really relate to Cynthia Star's journey and the situations she found herself in. I was just rooting for her and mr Jinx right from the very start. Additionally I enjoyed the gentle and nurturing cadence of the narrator, Valerie Cline's voice throughout which somehow made the wise words from the author feel very nurturing and i felt like I was being wrapped up in a warm blanket with a mug of hot cocoa while listening to it. The whole book felt rather comforting to hear spoken aloud and I was only sorry when it came to an end (like all good things must).

Loved this quick little happy read more than I expected! This is the perfect, surprising self-help book / memoir when you need a pick me up. As a cat owner, I didn't need to be convinced of all the happiness that comes with a cat but the chapters and life lessons were wonderful.
The author, Cynthia, found herself unexpectedly with Mr Jinx, an initially difficult long-haired cat with an adventurous personality. By the second chapter, hate turns to love as Jinx helps her navigate her new empty-nest life post-divorce and eventually move to a new state for new adventures.
Highly recommend this heart-warming little read. Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this in exchange for my honest review.
Very Simplistic story. I am owned by several felines and can’t imagine my life without them. Loved that initially the author realized it wasn’t her cat that had issues but it was her who needed to understand cats better. She changed her home around a bit and got kitty some great toys, scratching posts, etc. Then she decided to take her cat outside in a leash with a harness. Very responsible initially but then both her and her vet decided the cat would be most happy left loose outside to roam. Super irresponsible. Puts the cat in harms way. And I also did not like when she moved (for the 10th time-or so it seemed) that she couldn’t think of ways to keep her cat safe from her roommates opening her bedroom door and letting him go outside.
Happiness Came With a Cat is a book about the author’s life and how it changed for the better when Mr Jinx the cat came into her life. The author talks about a separation with her husband, which led to a sense of grief and loss, and about struggles with an eating disorder for many years. I enjoyed reading about how Mr Jinx made life more interesting and brought a sense of comfort into the author’s life (after the chaos he brought at the start!). I really liked how the chapters were organised into lessons, for example, ‘cats are better than people’, as this was a nice way of dividing up the different parts of the book. I enjoyed reading this and would recommend this to any cat lovers or people interested in real life stories!
