About the author

Perch Zeytuntsyan is an Armenian playwright and screenwriter who served as Minister of Culture of Armenia from 1990 to 1991. Zeytuntsyan was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II, his family moved to Soviet Armenia during a period of intense economic hardship. Zeytuntsyan attended the Aghayan School in Yerevan and it was during this period that he published his first short story "The Gift" (1953). Several years later, he published his first collection, "His First Companion". The latter work won him critical acclaim, after which he published a series of novels and novellas, including "Sounds of Our Neighborhood" (1959), "After Us" (1963), "For Paris" (1965), "Claude Robert Izerli or a Twentieth-Century Legend"(1975), "Arshak the Second", "The Last Dawn" (1989), and "The Stolen Snow" (1995). Since their publication, many of these works have been translated into Russian, Czech, Bulgarian, Hungarian, and the languages of the Baltic Republics.

Նույնիսկ չեմ հիշում, թե քանի անգամ եմ կարդացել՝ շատ: Ամենասիրած գրքերիցս մեկն ա, ու էն գրքերից, որ չեն սպառվում: Առաջին անգամ կարդալիս ինձ զարմացրել էր Զեյթունցյանի գրելու արվեստը՝ անընդհատ հետ-առաջ, մի տեսակ գլխապտույտ, երբեմն չես հասցնում մտքերի հետևից վազես: Բայց հիմնականում էդ ռիթմը պատճառաբանված ա, ու հաճույքով ես հետևում դրան: Հայ գրողների կյանքից կենսագրական շատ կտորներ կան, երբեմն բառացի մեջբերված հիշողություններ, խոսակցություններ, բայց դրանք չեն խանգարում պատմությանը, որ իր սեփական ճանապարհով գնա, այլ օգնում են, որ գրողների հետ սկսես դու-ով խոսել: Էս գրքից հետո արևմտահայերենին սկսեցի ավելի քնքշանքով վերաբերվել, իսկ արևմտահայ գրողներից շատերի գործերը սկսեցին ինձ համար ուրիշ կերպ ընկալվել, բանաստեղծություններից թռցրած տողերը ավելի հարազատ էին, ավելի անձնական: Սարսափելի ա ուղղակի, թե ինչքան շատ նյութ ա ուսումնասիրել Զեյթունցյանը էս ահռելի, հրաշալի, սարսուռ գործի համար: Ու չնայած փաստավավերագրող հիշեցնող տոնին՝ ավելի շատ վավերագրված զգացմունքներ են:

Այս գրքից հետո այլևս չեմ կարող հինը լինել....Այսքան մոտիկից զգալ, այսքան մոտիկից ճանաչել մեր մեծերին, ապրել իրենց կյանքով ու գիտակցել իրենց եզակիությունը, իրենց մեծությունը.... Այնքան պարբերություններ, խոսքեր, մտքեր եմ դուրս գրել, գիրքն ուղղակի "հատընտիր է".... Մի' մտահոգվեք, մենք հիշում ենք ՁԵԶ, , դուք ապրում եք մեր գենետիկ հիշողության մեջ.... 07.07.15-ին դաժանաբար սպանվեց Գրիգոր Զոհրապը և այդ դաժան սպանության գույժը կարդացի 106 տարի անց` 07.07.21-ին.... Թուրքը ձախողել է, հայը փյունիկի նման վեր է հառնել մոխրից....

I started reading this book at one of the most complicated times of my life: Armenia was again being attacked and innocent people were dying from bombs thrown at them by those who had once tried to wipe my nation off the earth…
Although this book is written many years ago and tells the most horrific events of the Armenian genocide, it is still very topical. Unfortunately, watching the world political leaders playing their game of hide-and-sick, I am terrified by the fact that I find a lot of similarities between what’s happening now in and around Armenia and what was happening to the Armenians around 1915.
‘The Last Dawn’ gives a detailed depiction of the life of the Armenians and of the Armenian intelligentsia in Turkey, of their exile, deportation, imprisonment and in the end of their murder. If there’s one book about the Armenian Genocide that absolutely needs to be translated in all possible languages in the world, then it is this one!
