"Come live with me, and be my love, and we will some new pleasures prove" he whispered, quoting the poet, John Donne.
"It's not that easy,"she murmured.
"Yes it is," he murmured back.
"What if our paths don't go in the same direction?" she asked softly.
"We need to be like railroad tracks and make sure our paths stay side by side," he said, kissing her head.

Tate Morgan endures unimaginable horrors in her life and came out the other side just an empty shell of herself. We don't know her whole story at first. We are given pieces of it throughout the book through nightmares and flashbacks. And what we see of what she endured is utterly heartbreaking. You just want to grab her and wrap her tight in your arms and make everything ok. She is self-reliant, independent, but untrusting, and alone. She is a full time student in her last year studying photography, and works as a waitress and self-defense teacher.
She knows that girls like her never get that happily ever after and she has accepted that. But when she meets Dr Jace Staton at her bar she is rattled and starts to wish she could somehow have more. He is the new singer for the band at her bar that is made up of interns from the nearby hospital. His beautiful voice pulls her in while his gentle, determined gaze tells her he's going to be the one to give it to her and he won't give up easily.
"He brushed his lips up to her ear and whispered, "We could be so good together. Can't you feel it?"
"One day, Tate Morgan, you will open up to me. And when you do, it will be..." he paused for dramatic effect and leaned forward to whisper in her ear, "magic." A shiver ran up her spine at the touch of his lips against her ear.

I totally love Jace. He was sexy, strong, and never wavers in his will to be there for Tate. He knows something has hurt her from her past but she won't let him in. He stays, never faltering or doubting what they have and will do anything to take away her pain. Slowly, he finds a way in but she keeps her past firmly in the past. She doesn't trust that he will want anything to do with her when he learns how sordid and shameful her life was. The past has a way of leaking into the present however and she can't escape it no matter how hard she tries.
"You said you wanted to be like the swans and find a mate for life." "I remember," he murmured as he slowly rubbed his hand lightly against her neck. "I'm not...that person...I can't be that person." Bowing her head, she said so low he had to strain to hear, "I won't ever be that person."

She has to overcome her trust issues and believe that their love will be strong enough to overcome anything because he wants it all from her. Past, present, and forever. I loved this book!! There are so many books out there that have the "damaged, broken" heroine and the hero puts her back together. This is SO much more than that. It's not empty, meaningless angst. This is so genuine and filled with raw emotion. It makes you want to cry right along with her at the injustice of what happened in her past. And Jace, with his quiet, unyielding support is there for her when she seeks out the peace that she deserves.
My only negative thing I could say about this story was that the ending was definitely too abrupt. I could've done with a little bit more detail at the end, although the epilogue did make up for it some. Overall, it was a heartbreaking, and heartwarming story all at the same time and I am so glad I found it!
