from the fifth paragraph of the intro : “there are many times when we need praise and recognition, and the quilt becomes the perfect bridge to people who will be impressed with the patterns, the colors, and the time we invested.”
I got this book for $1 and after reading through it, I actually think I could sew a quilt! Very approachable, practical, and encouraging. No advice on creating time to pursue this skill, though.
This is known a GO TO BOOK on how to quilt. It has been used by numerous quilters in the quest of learning how to quilt. The book discuss selecting colors, fabric selections, choosing patterns, techniques, drafting patterns and templates are all found in this book.
The patterns in this book are very traditional and somewhat dated. The techniques in these books are also older and many techniques have been improved upon. I felt the explanation of the techniques were kind of brief and incomplete.
I have had this book for several years and it is a good book for those that like to collect books. I would not recommend this book to a newbie quilter as there are better more complete books on the market today.
Patterns with (reduced) blocks, including all fabric requirements take up the first half of the book. The second part covers all the techniques to help a beginning quilter feel comfortable tackling their first quilt.
This is a great book for a quilting beginner. I used the book because I tried a few new techniques even though I am a quilter. The author presents information in step by step directions explaining why through each step. It is a great book to give the new quilter. It is a quilter’s bible.
This was the very first quilting book I owned that made sense to me. I was just getting into quilting and had purchased two others, but they left me lost and confused. This one put me back on track and made me a quilt maker!
The instructions are clear and the projects are great. There are blocks for the beginner right up to the advanced. They even show you how to make a sampler quilt out of all the block designs they give you. Or you could take any block in the book and make a whole quilt out of it.
To this day (12 years later), this book is my quilt bible. I regularly go to its pages to look up key techniques are measurements; like how wide to cut a binding strip.
Thank you so much for this book. It really opened my eyes to the craft that has become my favorite.
This book is THE definitive book on Quilt making -- the best book on quilt making that has ever been written.
The sampler quilt that Diana and Laura chose for the book is the best sampler of quilting techniques that a quilter can make -- as when you're finished with the quilt, you will be able to know exactly which construction technique to use for quilts in the future just by looking at a block or a quilt. The structure of this book was cutting edge at its' inception and has held up witth the test of time. There is no coincidence that this book is the best selling book on quilting ever, and is still in print after 20+ years.
This is a good book to have on hand as a reference book. If you ever need to figure out what size you need to cut the squares in order to make the triangles for an on-point block setting, this is your book. Good basic patterns as well.
Great reference book. I am an experienced quilter so I would say this was geared more towards a novice but it still has some fun patterns that I will definitely use.
