Crown "Prince" Ayato is neither male or female, but at the age of 16 must choose a gender. Why does Ayato have a pair of "wings" on "his" back and what will "he" lose when "he" falls in love?
An intriguing start to a series that ultimately falls far too short and predictable.
In the first volume of Magnolia, we are introduced to the basic setting and many of the main characters of the story. The story's concept is, well, quite hetero normative, but enjoyable and unique for a genderbender manga. The gist of it is that the main character, the crown prince Ayato, is neither a man nor a woman, and that "his" gender is determined by the sex of whom "he" falls in love with.
The volume start off in a more humorous note in the first chapter, taking on much more sinister aspects already in the second chapter, though it becomes clear the process towards unfolding the full story behind Ayato and "his" determination to become a man is slow - or would have been, had the manga not been cancelled fairly fast, ending in seven volumes. Either way, the first volume does a good job stirring up some interesting, suspenseful plot lines, and getting into the drama factor in starting in chapter 3. Not to mention, the art is largely gorgeous, especially starting from chapter 2 when the more serious stuff kicks in.
The first volume also includes the first chapter of the companion series, Lily - which is unsurprisingly about Lily, Ayato's cousin. She's a very likable character, I'm glad naked ape recognized that.
This is not your typical gender bender historical story. The crown prince is very much a loner at the academy and disguises his looks behind thick glasses and a shaggy hair style. However, he harbors a secret. He's neither male nor female. And his current appearance is more feminine than masculine. This causes all sorts of problems. This is not a light comedy. While there are humorous moments, it is a complicated tale about Ayato struggles with his gender identity as well as the problems it causes with being the crown prince. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
I am in love with this manga. If you love Afterschool Nightmare then you will defiantly love this book. I couldn't find this book in the local stores, but I found this book on line and I was reading so much that I didn't even notice I had read into the second book. Magnolia is a gender bender book. It's about a boy/girl who has to make a decision whether he wants to be a male or female. This decision also affect rather or not he become king.
