BOOK They maneuvered around the red light’s edge. A hulky black shadow stood in the middle of the glowing red. In disbelief, Cassie lifted her eyes to the ominous shadow’s source and nearly lost her footing.
“Mech!” she shouted, pointing. No denying, it was a beauty. On the intramural field, she might have whistled appreciatively, but at that moment, the sight of that perfect machine of sleek metal and recent design made her want to scream in pure terror.
“Go!” Skai pushed her forward. “Run!”
But the top of the water tower shuddered as the Mech landed upon the surface. Cassie fell to her knees from the force. She pushed forward, scrambling on hands and knees, while the sound of hydraulic legs whined above the ricocheting din.
She regained her footing and glanced back over her shoulder to Skai. He was approaching the Mech that stood over twice his size, his hand reaching to a gun holster, which he no longer wore—a military habit. He cursed. For a brief moment, she saw the surprised anger in his eyes, before he glanced back at the machine.
The Mech turned its attention from her to him. Taking two jolting steps forward, it covered Skai in shadow. A long metallic arm swung up, the arm’s mechanism twirling circularly, purring and clicking, while metal tiles smoothly pulled backward. The arm’s inner working pushed forward with a hiss, revealing a gun barrel.
“Oh! For Mau’s sake,” she moaned, terrified, as the arm shot once. Skai jerked backward. Cassie covered her mouth to keep from screaming. A second shot hit him in the stomach, and he doubled over.
Skai fell to his knees, then upon his stomach, and lay still. The Mech stomped toward him and lifted his limp body.
Was he dead? She stood, frozen, staring at his dangling arms and legs. Her stomach twisted painfully. Gran’s heavy meal surged up her throat.
Choking, she staggered away and moved toward the ladder.
This story kept me up till wee-hours of the night. I started it thinking I’ll read a few chapters and get on with my chores around the house. The chores didn’t get done. There is so many plot twists and turns you didn’t know how it would end and had to keep reading. Cassie is the heroine and is delightful. I found myself identifying with her and rooting for her. Skai the hero is one hot dude. They get into loads of trouble and their relationship sizzles. If you’re looking for a page turning, plot twisting Sci-fi romance you won’t be disappointed.
This hugely entertaining science fiction adventure takes place in a universe where there is no more land to steal, except what a greedy Duke/businessman claims for his own benefit. Thus the thieves, bounty hunters, pirates and rogues have taken to stealing the sky—or the bits of it they can hold onto: some with their super bots and soldiers, and others with their crews of misfits. Dey has created a fascinating and carefully constructed complex universe that feels as well researched as any historical period. The heroine Cassie (spoiled daughter of the greedy Duke) and the hero Skai (a former soldier turned skeptic–especially where Cassie is concerned) are kidnapped and go racing through space from one breath-robbing adventure to another. The excitement builds as, with their lives threatened time and again, with enemies and allies springing from unexpected places, Cassie grows into a passionate woman, a warrior who learns to put others first. You won’t want to put this one down; the energy grabs you and doesn’t let go.
Stealing Sky is a hoot. It's a serious, sometimes grim story that at other times uses a beautifully light touch. For example, there's a ship full of female space pirates who go around talking like pirates. The pirate leader even sports an eye patch, as you can see on the cover. It sounds over the top, but Dey makes it work.
The main characters were well developed, with both outer and inner problems to deal with, and Dey sketched in the story's world just enough to make events believable. Although as a science fiction reader I wouldn't have minded even more world building, I have to say that Dey did a good job balancing SF and romance. The relationship between Cassie and Skai developed naturally and believably, and the bad guys get their just desserts. All in all, an excellent read.
Stealing Sky is a heart-tugging, blood-pumping journey into the future where good and evil still combat. I loved how the heroine, Cassie, transforms from a ego-centric girl to a courageous, sympathetic woman!
