At the same time, the author also challenges attempts to "debunk" nationalism that fail to grasp why it maintains its power and centrality in modern life.

Гарний огляд теорій націоналізму, станом на 1998 р.: тут і класичні роботи 1983 р., і теорії 1990-х рр. Але матеріал структуровано не довкола них, а довкола тих чи інших аспектів націоналізму. Тобто читачі/ки мають змогу побачити, які є способи описувати / пояснювати різні виміри націоналізму - з перспективи різних теорій. Такий пробемно орієнтований виклад цікаво виділяється на тлі Смітівського "Націоналізм: Теорія, ідеологія, історія" чи Касьянівських "Теорії нації та націоналізму". Адже матеріал гарно структуровано: всі дослідники однієї проблеми зібрані в одному розділі.
Автор соціолог, але не стільки прагне створити свою теорію, яка перевершить всі інші (як це норовить зробити Сміт в своїх працях), скільки прагне систематизувати вже існуючі теорії - і показати, як вони взаємно доповнюють одна одну. Так, це дуже подібна позиція до метатеоретизування Рітцера (та й відповідає загальному настрою в соціології після дебатів 1970-х рр.): жодна з теорій не має достатньо сил, щоб подолати інші, кожна з теорій добре описує і пояснює певний фрагмент реальності. Тож давайте зберемо їх докупи!
Калхуну це вдається. Ключовими є передмова, де автор пояснює, що буде розглядати націоналізм (та, частково, і саму націю) як дискурс, і післямова, де автор систематизує все викладене в книзі.
Тому, звісно, шкода, що Калхун не пробує сам потеоретизувати (як це роблять Білліг чи Брубейкер). З іншого боку, і така "метатеорія" націоналізму дуже корисна.

Relectura després de 7-8 anys.

Interessant per les aportacions que fa i exemples que posa de nacionalismes més enllà del concete que tenim a l’Europa Occidental. Parla de nacionalismes a Àfrica, Àsia, Amèrica Llatina…Ara bé, és un llibre teòric amb tot el que comporta això. De fet, és un dels clàssics sobre la qüestió teòrica del nacionalisme.

Jo li’l recomane a tot l’estudiantat d’història, polítiques i sociologia. A la resta també, però reconec que es pot fer dens.

Very informative read. Extremely challenging in terms of vocabulary as well as historical, political, and socio-economic prior knowledge needed to understand references and situations presented in the text. This book is well worth the difficulty because it is vivid, clarifying, prophetic, and most of all, fair.

Interesting follow up on Benedict Anderson, Anthony Smith, and Ernest Gellner. Tries to chart a course between all three by broadening the concept of nationalism.
