In the final chapters of Helen Eriksson's quest for the truth about herself, she uncovers the secret in Darkwater Bay that Jerry Lowe once warned her wasn't meant to remain buried. When the dust settles from the final confrontation, she wonders who will be left alive, and on whose side they'll stand.
Sygnet was a mastermind of schoolyard schemes as a child who grew into someone who channeled that inner criminal onto the pages of books. In the real world, the profession is nursing, psychiatric variety.
Devoted to family, friends and dogs in middle age, Sygnet spends most spare time plotting fiction, reading obsessively or playing with her four-legged children – the dogs.
Sygnet is a rabid NBA fan and loves the elliptical when the plot gets elusive. Nothing like endorphins to light the path. When endorphins fail, speed metal usually does the trick. Sygnet can often be found muttering over Pages on the iMac or the iPad, where most of the writing takes place.
This is the last of a series of seven novels which are really a singular tale. The story is a psychological thriller about a former FBI agent who murdered her ex-husband and is then pulled into a year long investigation which uncovers a human trafficking ring.
The plot(s) is fascinating...nail biting at times. Character development is superb. Overall these seven books are very good reads. However...
I have two criticisms of this mostly wonderful work.
1. I would recommend that Sygnet find beta readers if for no other reason than to proof read her manuscripts. The typos were many and at some points glaring and bothersome.
2. The books carried a decidedly anti-Christian theme. The good guys were atheist...and often spoke/thought of the absurdity of religion. And the antagonists...the "monsters" as they were often referred to in the books...were "fundamentalist" Christians. One of them was a pastor. Bad call, Ms. Sygnet. I understand that the views of fictional characters are not necessarily the views of the author and I am willing to give Sygnet a pass on that account. But it would be nice to balance that view with some good guy Christians who present what Christianity is really all about.
Criticisms aside, her work was well worth the read. Good work!
Great series! There are other books, and I have already bought them with the hope that the awesomeness continues. This is a well written (though a good edit is needed), thought provoking, multi-layered read, with characters that are wonderfully flawed and entertaining. I had trouble putting each of these reads down, and spent a few nights and early mornings finishing up. Well worth the time and effort. If you enjoy mystery, detective drama, and a little bit of romance, this series and its inhabitants will not disappoint! First 2 books are FREE on nook, so there really is no excuse!
I started out confused in this series with all the different characters but this last book in the series brought everything together and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. I loved the final outcome but the way the book actually ended was a bit abrupt. I would have liked to see a bit more into the future of the people in this story that I came to care about a lot. Hoping there might be another book that continues on with Helen and Johnny after their boys are born.
Good story but completely need more than the ending gave....just kind of dropped off...would have liked to see a little further into Helen and Johnny....After all the books read for the series, I have to say this is the first time I was not digging the main female character....was still a good series though
Really enjoyed this book. By far the best in the series. That is probably because finally everything falls into place and comes to a conclusion. Only criticism is that it finishes quite abruptly. Would have liked a bit about Helen and Johnny's twins being born. Hopefully this will continue into another book.
