"He was so solid and strong beneath her fists. It felt like the world could be falling down around them and he would still hold her safely above everything. A warrior battling back the nightmares."

This was such a wonderful book <3
I knew I'd love Zeke from the moment I met him in the previous book and I was not disappointed, he really was amazing <3

The story

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Zeke, a war veteran who works in the Lost ‘N’ Found Investigative Service, has been crushing over a girl for ages, but with his injuries and insecurities, he hasn't had the guts to approach her.
Ember works as a waitress in her diner, she's been crushing over Zeke for a long time too, ever since he saved her from some moron customers.
Something happens to Ember that forces her to change her life, move out to another flat, to find someplace safe for her and her son.
Zeke finds himself helping with the move and getting to know Ember better, even though he thinks she doesn't want to have anything with him because of his scars :(

Zeke and Ember

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

They are such a perfect couple <3
I love them both!
Ember, because she is so understanding and doesn't care about the way he looks, and she helps him get over it :)
Zeke, because I just can't help but love him! He is so sweet, I wanted to hug him all the time <3
I felt so bad for what he went through, and with how he feels about himself, his confidence isn't very high because he is scarred in the face as well as body, and Ember helps him to get over it <3
*sigh*
Like I said, they are perfect for each other <3

Overall

I love this series :)
I loved the prequel, I loved the first book, and now I loved the second one <3
I am so glad the author decided to write about this topic, and I just can't recommend it enough to everyone!
There are lots of military romances out there, but they don't really show how war gets, the bad side of it.
Here, we get the happy ever after for the veterans who didn't return whole, or who have problems that every second soldier has.
It is sad to see it, but still wonderful and hopeful to read.
Beautiful.

PS: I seriously can't wait for Aiden's story. He deserves an UBER-uber-uber happy end :(((((

I really wanted to love this book.

Truly, I did.

description

Especially since I love the subject matter and because you can really tell that the issues discussed in this series as a whole are very near and dear to the author.

And I respect that.

It just seems that I can't get on board with this series.

I really enjoyed the series "prologue" book...book one was just okay...and this one was just not that good for me.

The writing in general is just not for me methinks.

The way things happen and come together just feel too sticky sweet and contrived for my liking...

description

Example:

"The apartment she found suited her needs perfectly...they could move in immediately because it was vacant...there was a single mother one building down who watched children...As soon as she knocked on the woman's door and saw the happy kids inside, she knew she knew Drew would be fine...The preschool would deliver him here...It wasn't ideal, but damn close..."

Hmmmm, sounds pretty magically ideal to me.

I didn't know preschools "delivered" kids home...

description

But anyway.

Another thing that bothered me was that, supposedly Ember was virtually virginal..."One time" and bam there was Drew I believe the story went...

description

...but of course she was like a magical sex maniac that blew up like Old Faithful at the drop of a hat and gave head like a pro, despite "never having done this before" yadda, yadda, yadda.

And boy did she sure find the "glory land" pretty quick every time, not to mention all the magical "white light" that was seen.

But I digress.

Like I said, things were just a little too...convenient for me. And came together a little too quickly.

Also, the whole situation with the Dad and how that was handled - including how Zeke "tested him" - didn't sit right with me.

At all.

Anywho, I seem to be the odd one out on this series, which is totally fine with me because I really did want to love it.

So it's probably just me.

Wow Embattled Minds is the second book in the Lost and found series and It was better than the first!

Zeke Foster was injured while in Afghanistan serving as a Marine. He suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury )and is scarred all over his body, but mainly his face. He speaks with a stutter. Working for Lost ‘N’ Found Investigative Service has been a real blessing for him. His bosses are great. They understand his needs and the limitations that come along with his injuries. Even though he is doing the best he can and trying to get his life together he is struggling with a lot of insecurities about his looks and very embarrassed and self conscious that he stutters and has a hard time putting his words together. He and his buddies from work have been hitting the local bar and grill every Saturday, where a little dark haired waitress has caught his eye.

 photo Zeke_zpsfbthxvrv.jpg

Zeke was sweet, and sexy as hell. I melted the way he was with Ember's son. The way he helped and protected Ember being her strength when she needed him showed what a great guy he is . My heart broke for his struggles. I felt his fear, his frustration, and his pain. His imperfections made him beautiful and courageous and damn if he wasn't a sexy beast in bed!
.“I appreciate the sacrifices you made for your men and our country, but if you ever lay a hand on Ember again, accident or otherwise, I think I’ll have to teach you some manners.”

“You’ve d-d-drugged me. I couldn’t think of anything but you last night and this morning.”

“I would walk over g-glass for you, in a damn hospital gown with my ass h-hanging out. And your son is brilliant. I look forward to playing Legos with him again.” He dared to reach out and tuck some hair behind her ear. “And I love you because you’re the only one that sees me, not the scars or the h-history, just me. You scare the hell out of me with how much you see.”

Ember Norton has been watching Zeke and his buddies come into her place of work every Saturday. She doesn't know why, but she is drawn to Zeke like no other. Tall as hell and built like a shit, brick house. He has scars all over his face, and he stutters, but that doesn't bother her in the least. She talks and flirts with him every time he comes in and tries to find a reason to touch that body every chance she gets, but when her dad, a ex Vietnam vet has a episode and ends up hitting her and sending her to the hospital, Zeke steps up and helps her in one of the worst times of her life, Sparks fly........

 photo Ember_zpshour4zqy.jpg

Ember was so brave and strong. The way she loved and accepted Zeke's flaws was heartwarming! I love the way she opened her heart to Zeke and gave him her all, showing him over and over again just how sexy, and strong she found him. Letting him see how much she needed him and how safe he made her feel!

“Now wait a minute. You’ve been with me all day. I’m not blind and I’m definitely not cruel. You know that. I actually do think you’re good-looking. Hell, you’re built like a damn underwear model and have the prettiest ice-blue eyes I’ve ever seen. Yes, you have scars, but they certainly don’t bother me, or turn me off. If anything, they turn me on, because they tell me exactly the kind of man you are.”

"Quit saying that, damn it! You have no idea what I’m thinking. Yes, I am attracted to you, but the only thing fugly about you is your attitude right now.”

“What a freaking ridiculous…” she lunged to her feet, throwing her hands in the air, “senseless, egotistical Marine thing to do! All this protective, defensive bullshit has to stop. I won’t stand for it. I told you flat out that I loved you. I think I loved you when you kicked those college kids out after they grabbed my ass. I know I loved you that day in my office when you held me in your arms as if you couldn’t let me go and let me cry out my frustration. I love your looks, even though,” she glared at him, “you went and changed them without telling me.”

“But your looks aren’t why I love you. You’re strong and resilient and have a heart of absolute gold, and I can tell when you touch me that you would walk over glass for me. Most especially, I love the way you treat my child, with respect and encouragement.”

 photo BeFunky_null_4_zpsyywmpvcq.jpg

I loved this book. Found Ember and Zeke's relationship sexy and romantic. Enjoyed everything about this book. The only reason it's not a 5 Star is I wanted it to be longer. I need more , it was too good and I didn't want it to stop! Great read I would 100% recommend this series!

Favorite Quote: He waited until she met his gaze. “I do love you.” Her face eased and relaxed into a smile. “I love you, too.” “I want you and Drew to marry me.” The nurse lifted the mask completely from him, sniffed and tactfully left the room. Ember’s brown eyes were wide and luminous with tears. One slipped down her cheek. “And I can speak for Drew when I say we want to marry you too. He already told me you needed a family. Our family.”

God I love this series. On to the next book :)

4.5 Raw and Real Stars!! I love this series and this heart-clenching book! I wanted to reach into the pages and wrap my arms around Zeke!!

 photo home_OneMind2_zps1b516363.jpg

Another great installment in the Lost and Found series! Embattled Minds deals with Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Through her amazing fictional characters and heartwarming stories, J.M. Madden shows us the reality of war and the hardships our service members face fighting the battle to survive when they come home!!

While the first book, Embattled Hearts, had an element of suspense, this one focuses solely on Zeke and Ember’s relationship, and Zeke’s never ending battle dealing with the facial disfigurement and brain related injuries he received, while serving as a Marine in Iraq. Ember’s dad, Hank, who is dealing with PTSD from his time served in Vietnam, is wreaking havoc in her life. Her safety is at issue and Ember has to make some rash decisions, and learn to trust the gentle giant who has captured her heart.

Zeke’s brain and body have been damaged, he’s a tortured soul, his confidence has been shattered, but Ember sees past the physical appearance and focuses on the man. She’s attracted to him in a way that she’s never experienced. Zeke hides behind his hair and his beard, but Ember lures him out and unleashes a passionate, loving man. She doesn’t hold back, and when he snaps, accuses her of giving him her pity, she gives it right back to him. Ember doesn’t coddle him, but treats him with dignity and respect, and it’s what Zeke needs to regain the confidence and pride that he left on the battlefield when he was wounded.

"He felt like a pussy, letting her cradle him like this, but he’d missed being close to another person. Talking to them without the fear they were going to cringe from his looks, or history, or, God forbid, because they were uncomfortable. He hated feeling like he had to apologize for the way he looked. He’d served his country with pride, and done a lot of shit that nobody else would. The woman in front of him had never given him reason to feel inferior. In anything."

The author doesn’t gloss over Zeke’s injuries and she characterizes him for who he is and what he is feeling. His wounds run deeper than what you can see on the surface. Zeke stutters, loses his train of thought, people stare at him, flinch, and then turn away when they see his facial injuries. It hurts him and we in turn feel his pain. She also addresses, through Ember’s father and a new member at LNF, the issues of PTSD. When triggered, it can cause disturbing and harmful actions from the veterans who are dealing with this silent wound.

All the key players make an appearance, Duncan, Chad, John, and it was wonderful to see them all again!! The camaraderie among the men, the crude banter, the support and understanding that they lend to each other, knowing they all are walking the same path, is what is at the core of this series. We get to catch up with each and every one, and I love them all! The author also baits us with the mystery surrounding the homeless man that Duncan encountered in the last book…just a teaser here and there. We also get a sneak peek into Chad's book, Embattled Home...I can't wait!

I would have liked an update on Ember’s father, Hank, and something in the way of a brief epilogue for Zeke and Ember, but since this is a continuing series and everyone from the previous book made an appearance here, I’m sure that we’ll continue to see their stories play out in the upcoming books. Just a slight issue for me, but it might not bother some readers.

J.M. Madden not only gives readers a great realistic story, she raises awareness to the plight of the men and women who serve in the military. Some of their wounds may not be visible, but none the less, they are still there, and no matter what they are suffering from, it is our responsibility, citizens who they protect, to insure that they get the care and counseling that they need.

From J.M. Madden’s Author’s Note:

With this book, I’m going to make a donation to the Beck Institute of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, outside Philadelphia. They offer scholarships to medical personnel training to deal with active duty and veteran military service members struggling with suicidal thoughts, post traumatic stress disorder, depression, substance abuse, anger, anxiety and other behavioral issues. If a soldier/Marine wants competent treatment, it should be available. Period.

She’s doing her part let’s do ours! I can’t recommend this series enough, the books are fantastic, but then to know that the author is donating to causes that help our wounded warriors, well that in itself is reason enough to buy her books!! Start with The Embattled Road, a free read, and be prepared to lose your heart!

A little something extra

In 2006 Bob Woodruff, an American journalist, suffered a severe head injury while embedded with the US military while he was covering the war in Iraq. He survived, and after many surgeries and extensive re-hab, he was able to continue his career as a reporter. His road to recovery was a long one, but he was one of the lucky ones. He started a non-profit organization, the Bob Woodruff Foundation, and has made it his mission to help those who serve to protect us.

“BWF works to support all injured service members with a special emphasis on the Hidden Injuries of War - Traumatic Brain Injury and Combat Stress. While the wounds of these injuries may not always be visible, their impact is felt long after a service member returns and their treatment is often the most costly and difficult to attain.”

In November of 2012 they held a fundraiser, Stand Up For Heroes, and at this fundraiser Marine Lance Cpl. Tim Donley, along with the Wounded Warrior Band and accompanied by Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) performed Wide River to Cross. Listen to this song, to the lyrics, sung by this beautiful young man and his brothers in arms; in my opinion, it embodies what is at the heart of J.M. Madden’s Lost and Found series!

Wide River to Cross ~ Levon Helm

There's a sorrow in the wind
Blowing down the road I've been
I can hear it cry while shadows steal the sun

But I cannot look back now
I've come too far to turn around
And there's still a race ahead that I must run

I'm only halfway home, I've gotta journey on
To where I'll find, find the things I have lost
I've come a long long road but still I've got some miles to go
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross

I have stumbled, I have strayed
You can trace the tracks I made
All across the memories my heart recalls
But I'm still a refugee, won't you say a prayer for me?
'Cause sometimes even the strongest soldier falls

I'm only halfway home, I've gotta journey on
To where I'll find, I'll find the things I have lost
I've come a long long road but still I've got some miles to go
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross

I'm only halfway home, I've gotta journey on
To where I'll find, I'll find the things that I have lost
I've come a long long road but still I've got some miles to go
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross

*My sincere thanks to J.M. Madden for gifting me with an ARC of Embattled Minds. It was my pleasure and honor to read and review your book*

Embattled Minds is now available for purchase and Embattled Hearts is only .99 until 7/7

Oh my darling Humpty Dumpty Zeke! I adored every part of you!

While in Iraq, Zeke had a building fall on him, causing severe cuts to his face and upper body and giving him a traumatic brain injury which impacted his speech and slowed his ability to compose his thoughts.

"It looked like his face had been shattered into about six pieces, then stitched back together by a drunken surgeon."

Ember was a waitress at the local bar and grill where the boys would frequent. Her attraction and connection with Zeke was evident from their first introduction in Embattled Hearts. She saw the man, not the scars or the speech impediment.

"Your scars don't bother me. I love them, because they tell me exactly the kind of man you are, willing to fight for your country and your brothers.....The outside isn't the important part to me. It's this right here."

It took a while for Zeke to fully embrace the fact that Ember truly didn't care about his outward appearance. That his insecurities were just that...HIS insecurities.

This book didn't really have any suspense and/or mystery, instead focused on the emotional journey of Zeke's acceptance of himself. His vulnerability jumped off the page, and I loved how Ember never pushed him further than she felt he needed to go. The evolution of their relationship was perfectly paced.

There was a side plot regarding Ember and her Dad, but it just added an extra layer to the story....reaffirming how PTSD can affect so many parts of a person's life and showing the deep bond of brotherhood between soldiers. Whether they served together or came from different generations, the bond is there.

So far this book had the most steam. Zeke may have been insecure about his outward appearance, but his manly capabilities were that of a Greek God. And with all the emotional aspects of this story, the steam was quite welcomed......and greatly appreciated!!

Over the course of 2.5 books, J.M. Madden has pulled a range of emotions out of me. But the strongest emotion I've felt is admiration....her ability to handle such delicate subject matters, while fully engaging the reader in an emotional romance is fantastic. And for that...

4.5 Stars!!! Loved it!!!! this would have been a five star read for me but, the ending seemed too abrupt.

I adored Zeke, Ember, and little Drew. Fantastic edition to the Lost and Found series. Ember & Drew were perfect for Zeke, I hope see more of them in future books, especially updates on Ember's dad, I'd like to see his recovery completed. I love and adore these wounded warriors!! Looking forward to Chad's book!

I love stories with kids, and wish this had been explored a little bit more but I still liked the gravity it gave this book. Loved the hero's protective side and his vulnerable side. No real suspense in this second installment, but I kind of liked the change up.

Part of a wounded warriors series. Embattled Minds is an erotic romance enveloped within an insightful and poignant portrayal of the war veteran. Madden illustrates the plight of "wounded warriors" besieged by post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and — in this case — language impairment.

This is Zeke Foster's chance for romance, and just in time for Christmas in Denver. He played a promising (but slight) secondary role in Embattled Hearts, the prequel (my review).

Zeke is a retired Marine, discharged honorably when his world blew up. Currently an investigator for Lost 'n Found, he's a big blond Viking with a severely scarred face and a speech / language impairment caused by head trauma. If only he hadn't taken cover beside that particular building...

Ember Norton is a single mother who manages her father's restaurant, the Frog Dog Grill. She's a beauty. He's not. Or so he believes...

War Veteran Aspects: 4.5 stars
Madden's treatment of PTSD and aphasia is the greatest strength of this book. She is descriptive, detailed, and seemed authentic. We see the need for therapy, and the government's inability to provide sufficient counseling services in the face of increased numbers. I worried about Ember's father, with his eternal memories of horrific Huê ( I need a Vietnamese accent mark). In fact, I woke up this morning from a nightmare (!!!) wherein her father went nuts and fired a few rounds into her apartment.

We also saw how PTSD affected Diego Ortez (the knife made me nervous), and of course, poor homeless Aiden.

Madden conveyed Zeke's aphasia well, showing how fear and frustration only makes it harder to find the right word, exacerbating the stuttering symptom.

What a beautiful story of brotherly love! The close bond these wounded warriors share is precious, and presumably all too rare. Likely, it does in fact depend on the leadership and commitment of a good man like Duncan, and the utterly sincere yet charmingly boyish regard of a comrade like Chad. Lovely man! With an organized, capable, and productive paraplegic as second in command, the message is clear: Lost and Found wants YOU, just as you are.

By the way, I am happy to report that Chad can run even faster than normal with his new prosthetic leg. Amazing technological advancements for our wounded warriors. Only wish every citizen had equal access. By leaving Aiden out in the cold, on the streets, we see the alternative.

Romantic Aspects: 3 stars
This book was sweet, as Zeke and Ember fall in love. I was happy for Zeke and Ember, and even little Drew. (Drew's dialogue struck me as advanced for a four-year old).

Sweet, yes. However, the relationship felt underdeveloped. They needed to talk together more, and not only about his "fugly" mug. Within about one week, they were going at it like minks, front and rear, oral and other, on the wall, the couch, the bed.... The sex was hot, and I got hot, too, Lol! (It got explicit with the swallowing scene. Improbable, too, given that she was almost a virgin, having been with only one man, for only one night, resulting in son Drew). I didn't feel enough sexual anticipation and tension. Full sex takes place in the first half of the book, and the emotional relationship suffered for it, IMO.

It started out so well. Loved the scene when Ember, as waitress, took Zeke's order for dark-chocolate ___. Chuckles! Loved the scene when he held Ember as she sobbed. Really enjoyed the scene where he helped her move to a different apartment.

But in the final analysis, there was too much focus on sex, and on a sense of "thank you for loving me despite my hideous face" — which diminished the relationship, for me. (Zeke would, of course, feel that way initially, so his appreciative thoughts needed to be included. However, the relationship needed to move beyond such an unequal footing.)

Suspense Aspects: n/a
I kept expecting a suspense, as occurred in the previous book Embattled Hearts. Through solving a mystery together, John and Shannon grew closer. This book had none of that. The only problem Zeke and Ember tackled together was Operation Moving Day. I do not count the hasty final crisis, in Colorado Springs. As to that, I question how

The only real suspense in this book is centered on Aiden, but it was a teaser, to be resolved in a sequel, I hope. (Damn cliffhangers. Lol!)

Writing Aspects: 3 stars
The POV is in third person, transitioning smoothly and easily between Ember and Zeke. Thank goodness — I dislike heedless head-hopping. The prose itself is okay, but nothing special, and sometimes trite. The dialogue is decent — not wooden — and occasionally witty. There is too much telling, not enough showing. For example, "Ember appreciated being included in such a great group of people."

However, Madden did "show us" Duncan Wilde's anxiety about Aiden. (His various actions spoke for him, and his quiet distance at the Christmas gathering showed that his thoughts were elsewhere, not in party mode).

I noticed about ten typos and formatting glitches. No big deal, though — they were minor, and did not impede comprehension. Examples: "but he's isn't going to like..." and "but her sheath needed filled, desperately." Also, Brian becomes Bryan.

I am not going to go all fan girl over this series, but seriously people it is awesome!

I adored Zeke and Ember. And, of course, Drew.

Zeke's disabilities were so obvious they had taken away his self confidence. But Ember was immediately taken with him. I loved her easy acceptance of him and his issues. He fought his insecurities a little, but maybe for 16 hours or so. This was a very quick relationship once they got started. Like 0-60 in record time! Which I loved! Plus they were HOT together!

Little Drew was cute and had good parts but did not dominate the story or take away from their sexy times. I was a little surprised at how easily Ember left Drew with friends to be at Zeke's side. But any other scenarios would not have worked so I was happy to go with it.

Loved catching up with the crew from the first story. The ending was awesome!

Zeke, seriously....

He is scarred both on the outside as well as in, but such a huge teddy bear with both vulnerability and quiet strength.

Zeke and Ember together were perfect. Loved their story.

I was looking forward to this book, Zeke was heavily scarred by the war is conscious about his face and what TBI did to his speech, he can't get out the words he wants to and stutters but the eating joint he goes to along with his friends has one person that doesn't make him feel like a freak and that person is Ember.

Ember has a lot on her plate, her father is a Vietnam vet and one of his friends suicide hit him bad, so she's practically running the business. Then her dad attacks her as a result of unresolved PTSD and she has tough decisions to make and Zeke catches her at a weak moment and comforts her, letting her cry on him. And when she has to move out because of the safety of her four year old son, he helps, bringing his friends along.

Now, the relationship develops fairly quickly but it doesn't feel that way. Ember is pretty inexperienced and has been doing the single mom thing with the help of her father but now her dad needs to get help. She doesn't see Zeke's scars, she sees him and it takes her time to make him believe that.

I loved the book though I noticed some errors and some of the wordings in the love scenes felt off but overall I am glad I am reading this series. Looks like Chad's book will be great.

The portrayal of PTSD mirrored differently in several characters is very engaging in this romance.

The heroine crush on the hero and struggle with her loving but troubled father makes her endearing.

The hero has self esteem issue that while reasonable are a bit one note.

I like this book slightly better than the last one as it was more character driven which I prefer.

This author has done it again. She has give a great warrior a story with tremendous dignity, intimacy and camaraderie. What a great group of characters.

A portion of the proceeds for this book is going to help wounded war veterans. Perfection. I can read a great romance and know the money I spent is helping those in need!

I had some minor issues with this book, but they were too few to really mention and did not detract from my enjoyment of this story.

Bravo Ms. Madden!

Happy Reading!

J.M. Madden I am a fan!

"It looked like his face had been shattered into about six pieces, then stitched back together by a drunken surgeon."
If I can use one word to describe this book it would be emotional. My heart was constantly in my throat when reading this. In book one I met Zeke and Ember but I had no idea I would enjoy their story this much.

Right from the start there is a deep attraction between Zeke and Ember. Zeke had a hard time believing Amber could love someone who looks like him. Zeke even refers to himself as a "freak and fugly." The poor guy is so sad and hurt. I just wanted to hug and squeeze him. Amber doesn't see the outward scars that covers Zeke's face, instead she endeavors to heal him on the inside. I loved that she never pushed him, she gave him just enough space when he needed it, and allowed him to open up to her when he's ready. I think this book is so dear to me because I have a scar. I know what its like when people stare and when they finally get the courage to ask how it happened. In addition to the facial scarring, Zeke has a speech problem. He stutters. All of this combined had made him shut off his emotions and keep to himself. In a literary world filled with assh*le heroes, Zeke is so endearing to me because he was really kind and caring. He's like a gentle giant. He helped Ember, and really took care of her when she faced a difficult situation.

I enjoyed seeing John and Shannon continuing happily in their relationship from Book One. In Embattled Minds we are not weighed down with useless descriptions and details. The book focuses on Zeke and Ember's growing relationship. The ending opened the waterworks and I finished this with tears in my eyes.
"You make me not feel like a damn freak."

"I never e-e-expected to find somebody willing to take all of me, like this."

This review might contain spoilers.
I really really wanted to like this. It had a "wounded warrior" Ex-Marine meeting a single mom and fall in love.
And the scarred Ex-Marine was a Viking-type guy (big, strong, nordic looking) - my favourite.

BUT the writing was mediocre at best. It was way too sweet and easy to be interesting. It had Insta-love and no real development (marriage proposal after basically two weeks of dating). It is noticeable that the author really cares about this topic (wounded warriors, PTSD and so on), but the way she put aside any obstacles in the MCs' way to eternal happiness made it into an unbelievable fairytale, that stayed uninteresting throughout everything, even the little drama in the end.
Ember was not a believable heroine, her constant confirmation how great she thought Zeke was, got on my nerves real quick, as it was quite unprobable. He was a customer in her bar, for g*ds sake, not her childhood friend. She didn't know him from Adam, so this felt off and phoney, like "oh, he's handicapped, then he must be a good person". And I really didn't buy all this arousal from merely being in his presence - nice story, but more for people who don't have any real experience with sex. And it clashed with the "nearly virgin" back story. So I cannot honestly give more than two stars, because I didn't like most of it - it was an ok read at best.

Have you've ever read a book and think if you read slowly it won't end? That's how I felt about this book (and series).

I could gush about this book until I'm blue in the face but will spare everyone the babble. Needless to say Ember and Zeke stole my heart. I absolutely adored Zeke and wanted so much for him to find his HEA after all of the emotional and physical pain he had gone through.

Ember was wonderful. I loved that she was a strong woman who didn't feel sorry for herself or ever give up. Her own life wasn't an easy road but her immediate unconditional love and acceptance of Zeke was heart warming.

It's refreshing to read a book where the H/h are both dealing with lifes hurdles but find strength in each other - makes for a great love story in my book.

Can't wait for Chad's book. YAY!

Wow I’m surprised. This book was actually good. Would give it a solid 3.5 stars maybe. It dealt with something people usually don’t talk about. Generally if the male lead is a marine or anything they are categorized as hot and built but this actually touched a subject of the reality of marines. Will patiently look out for the rest, specially as it’s chad’s book next XD

For me this ended way too quickly at 86% with a sudden HEA. Still a good series. Looking forward to Chad’s bk Embattled Homes.

"Your scars don't bother me. I love them, because they tell me exactly the kind of man you are, willing to fight for your country and your brothers.....The outside isn't the important part to me. It's this right here" - and laid her hand over his pounding heart.

Again J.M. ripped her heart out and left it beating on the page. Zeke and Ember's story was exceptional in its beauty and with a focus on PTSD and TBI, unnerving in its truth. Although I still feel her writing style leaves a lot to be desired, her ability to write emotionally memorable romances featuring forgotten heroes who truly embody the word has made a fan out of me.

J.M. Madden has a gift. She is able to create the most lovable broken men I have ever read . Zeke and Ember are such great characters and this is such an amazingly sweet story, I cried and my heart hurt for this big beautiful man. Maddens other gift is creating strong amazing women, I can't wait for the next in the series:)

A well thought out, realistically portrayed military romance. Well, post military romance. Of course, as anyone who has ever known anyone who served in the military will tell you, you do not come out of the military and suddenly turn back into the person you were before you went in. It changes a person.

Zeke suffered serious injuries during the war, a TBI with heavy facial scarring. The surgeries to correct some of the scarring, dealing with the TBI and PTSD I thought were all very well written, understandable and realistic. I loved that the author didn’t turn this man into a cartoon.

Zeke begins a friendship with Ember, a young woman with a child who runs a bar owned by her father, also a former Marine.

Ember admires Zeke from afar. A friendship ensues and romance builds. I enjoyed very much reading how these two fall in love with each other. I wished the story would have been given more page time to come to the ultimate conclusion of their HEA.

Turn the page and bam! Abrupt ending. It’s almost as if the author said, okay, everything’s looking good, time to stop and wrap this up. It’s a WTF moment for the reader to be sure.

Easily a 4.0 read without the abrupt ending. A disappointing 3.0 with the abrupt ending.

My review:

This was a super cute love story with really no drama whatsoever. It was a nice in between read - easy breezy.

Zeke, former marine, was injured very badly while on active duty several years ago. An explosion caused major scaring all over his body, including his face and head. Because of his injuries and the way he looks, he keeps to himself and doesn't really pay any mind to women. That is until he walks into a diner one day and sees Ember. She literally takes his breathe away not only in her looks but in her overall personality. So overtime, he keeps going into the diner with his work buddies and admires her from afar. Little does he know, but Ember has noticed him from the very start as well. Something happens that forces Zeke to come out of his shell and actually speak and interact with Ember. From there a sweet little love story develops.

This is a relatively short read that could have definitely used a nice epilogue. Also, it's an extreme case of insta-love. I probably would have rated it higher if it was a TAD longer with more character develop and an epilogue, but I understand that this is one book in a series so I am sure we will see more of these characters in more books :)

Thanks Erika for the recommendation!!!!!

Re-read April 2016

I still love this book. Last time I marked it as "perfect-hero" but this time around, I gotta tell you, Ember, the heroine, stole the show. I absolutely loved her. She accepted Zeke, scars and all, and saw the man beneath when not many people did. I'm half in love with her. She was perfect!
“I’ve told you before and I’ll tell you a million times more. Your scars don’t bother me. I love them, because they tell me exactly the kind of man you are, willing to fight for your country and your brothers. If you never have another surgery, I’ll be fine with it. The outside isn’t the important part to me. It’s this right here.” She laid her hand over his pounding heart.

Really liked this one too. There was more romance than suspense in this second book in the series (third if you count the novella). I liked both the hero and heroine, as well as the heroine's child. I liked catching up with the couple in the previous book. The conflict wasn't too exciting and some things were left unexplained. . I do want to continue the series and hope to grab Chad's book soon.
Thanks Jill lassie for the rec and for lending it to me!
