The anthology section at the bookstore is never very large, but it is in anthologies where the true poetic narrative shines. I say this from a person who's been in anthologies and enjoys reading them. It takes a different mindset to write a short story, a piece of flash fiction, and definitely a poem. I commend all who have done it. It sometimes takes me 500 pages to get to the point.

Not so with Because That's Where Your Heart Is, an anthology by Sans Pres and edited by Sam Agar. Sans. Press bills itself as an independent publisher with themed anthologies, and the obvious theme of this one is love--romance, passion, eros and philia, agape.

Within this theme, you may find yourself in stories that are paranormal, that are poetic, that are warm-hearted. From VR to actual reality, the sixteen stories presented in Because That's Where Your Heart Is are both entertaining and thought-provoking. By far, my favorite was the story that first pulled me into reading this anthology: "The Girl Who Lives on the Moon" by Joseph Anderson. Another favorite is "Encounters in Time" by Sam Muller. Both of these are poetic and moving and have stuck with me.

Another really good anthology from Sans. Press – I enjoyed reading this one just as much as The Secret Lives.

The best short stories in this collection were definitely the slightly darker/weirder ones like ‘Hair of the Dog’, ‘The Third Child’ and ‘Wolf’.

However I also really liked ‘Encounters in Time’, ‘Dream of Me’ and ‘The Hunt’ – all of which were a bit more poignant/sad.

Other standouts include ‘The Bride Revenant’ and ‘The Girl Who Lives on the Moon’.

I received an ARC of Because That's Where Your Heart Is in exchange for an honest review. Read the full review on Booksprout.

Sans. Press comes out swinging with their sophomore anthology, Because That’s Where Your Heart Is. Love precious, love poisonous, love obsessive, healing, and heartbreak all live between the pages of this crisp little collection.

Time, space, place, and the thin line between life and death all bend and blur together as this collection rollicks along, and the variety of voices bringing the characters and settings to life only enhances the experience.

Explore snow-struck European villages, plumb the depths of virtual reality, and walk with those who have loved and lost and lived to tell about it, or not, in this collection meant to show the world that Sans. Press may be new, but this is an indie publisher with vision and the capability to make its authors shine.

Standout stories for this reader included Tamburello’s “The Bride Revenant”, Regan’s “FPS” and Hassan’s “Kissing Emilie”.

ENTERTAINING AND VARIED

An anthology of 16 very different stories, both in terms of plot, characters and writing style.

All are on the theme of passion, in particular what animates and makes our hearts live.

There is something for every taste.

Great book. Wonderful stories. I have one in there. Going to be released as a hardcover in the near future. More werewolf stuff than I assumed there’d be…
