Timothy Keller was the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, which he started in 1989 with his wife, Kathy, and three young sons. For over twenty years he has led a diverse congregation of young professionals that has grown to a weekly attendance of over 5,000.

He was also Chairman of Redeemer City to City, which starts new churches in New York and other global cities, and publishes books and resources for faith in an urban culture. In over ten years they have helped to launch over 250 churches in 48 cities. More recently, Dr. Keller’s books, including the New York Times bestselling The Reason for God and The Prodigal God, have sold over 1 million copies and been translated into 15 languages.

After I became a Christian I read Mere Christianity by C. S, Lewis and thought "now I get it." I think Keller 's appeal is to those who "are getting it." His approach is both rational and reasonable and he is an able communicator. I liked the book and would recommend it even though God opened by eyes to the truth many years ago and I thank Him that "I got it."

I wish I could give this more than 5 stars. Keller is gifted in digging deep in the Scriptures and drawing out more that what first meets the eye. He helps us understand the context of what is written. Here he takes several familiar stories involving Jesus — e.g., Mary, Martha, and Lazarus; turning water into wine at the wedding; the woman at the well — and shatters our preconceived ideas of what these stories are about, what we've been taught in Sunday School, what we assumed we knew about them. His skillful insight and writing reveals so much more about Jesus than I ever knew and causes me to love Jesus all the more. Anything by Tim Keller is absolutely worth the reading and his podcasts are absolutely worth the listening.

Keller does it again. Encounters with Jesus is a series of ten accessible, winsome, well-articulated sermons on different personal meetings with Jesus in the Gospels. The first half of the book stays in John's gospel; the second half bounces around with some key events in the life of Jesus (Upper Room Discourse, Gethsemane, the ascension, etc.).

You'll find some rich exegesis, thought-provoking apologetics, and pastoral and practical warmth. Typical Keller. I loved it.

I’ve been in a lot of church small groups and read a lot of books in those, but out of all of them this is my favorite group I’ve ever read with a group. 10 chapters, each one offered up so much material for group discussion. All of the chapters highlight popular gospel stories that I’ve heard so many times, but Keller’s writing provides fresh and new insights. Highly highly recommend!

Short ish (6 hr audiobook) and very sweet. The intro and first chapter or so, I felt like it was fairly basic stuff, not unhelpful to be reminded of, but just normal "here's a Bible story and what it means." But then it REALLY picked up, and the "what it means" became more and more interesting and heavy-hitting. The book is written to a skeptic/non-believer, addressing lots of common hangups or criticisms of the faith. Would be a great read for an interested nonbeliever or a brand new Christian — but also for any Christian who might benefit from a quick but deep explanation of why evil exists in the world, how to think aboth suffering, prayer, etc etc. Recommend!

Tim Keller does a great job at being rational but also drawing out things in Scripture beneath the surface. He humanizes Jesus for me more in reading this book. I think we can always be challenge in our faith and how we view our walk with Jesus. This would be an excellent book to recommend to someone new in their faith alongside reading the Gospels.

While I still appreciate Keller's books very much, at this point now that I have read so many of them, he seems to get pretty repetitive, using many of the same stories and insights in multiple books. Still, I just appreciate reading them, even while I struggle with my sometimes overwhelming doubts.

Edit: for the most part I loved this book again on the second round. Each encounter with Jesus is explored with great respect and penetrating insight. Since I once again listened to the book instead of reading it, finding specific memorable quotations is obnoxiously difficult. More reason to actually get the books in text format.

One aspect of the book I still find unconvincing though is the treatment of the Holy Spirit. I still find it hard to buy that the work of the Holy Spirit today is better than having Jesus in the flesh here with us. Keller makes much of how Jesus is the advocate speaking to God on our behalf, while the Spirit speaks to us as an advocate. But the Spirit speaking to us? For me I just find it unconvincing that He does much of that, much in the way of what most would call speech.

Anyway loved the book again!

ان كانت المسيحية صحيحة فإن الحياه الجديرة بالعيش لا نجدها ساساً في التأمل الفلسفي او الاجتهادات الفكرية التي لا تتاح اصلاً لأغلب سكان الارض ، بل نجد مثل هذه الحياه في شخص نلتقيه في علاقه والدخول في هذه العلاقه متاح للجميع في اي مكان مهما كانت خلفيتهم

لذا فلا يوجد خطر مميت يمكن ان يقضي علي الحكمة والعلاقات الصحية اكثر من نبذ افكار معينة او اشخاص بعينهم

في كل مره لا يقع اختيار الله علي الاكبر سناً او من يتوقعه العالم او يقدره . وان جاز التعبير لايقع اختيار الله علي الشخص المنحدر من اورشليم بل يختار دوماً المنحدر من الناصرة

فإننا اذا تأملنا الكتاب المقدس سنجد ان الله -عندما يرينا الكيفية التي يعمل بها بواسطة امرأة ما - يختار النساء العاجزات عن الانجاب ويفتح ارحامهن ، لقد كن نساء محتقرات لكن الله اختارهن دوناً عن النساء اللاتي تمتعن بحب الناس وتقديرهم ودائماً ما يعمل الله بواسطة الرجال او الفتيان الذين لا يريدهم احد والنساء والفتيات اللاتي لا يرغب فيهن احداً

اما المسيحية فهي ليست مقصورة علي الاقوياء بل هي للجميع لا سيما لأولئك الذين يقرون بإنهم ضعفاء في حقيقة الامر انها لأولئك الذين يملكون من القوة ما يجعلهم يعترفون ان فسادهم ليس امراً سطحياً وان قلبهم في حالة فوضي عميقة وانهم عاجزون عن اصلاح انفسهم ان المسيحية هي لأولئك الذين يرون انهم يحتاجون الي مخلص

ان يسوع يقول لهؤلاء انه سيظل دائماً ابداً خارج حدود توقعات ما يبحث عنه اي شخص . سيظل يسوع دائماً مجاوزاً توقعاتنا وسيعلو كثيراً مل ما نطلبه او نتخيله

لكن ما يقوله يسوع هنا هو انه ليس هناك شئ خارجك يمكنه ان يشبع عطشك الداخلي العميق بحق واستكمالاً للصورة المجازية التي يستخدمها يسوع فأنت لا تحتاج الي مجرد زخات ماء ترش علي وجهك بل تحتاج الي ماء ينبع من اعمق مكان داخلك وبقوة اكبر من قوة عطشك

ويتحتم علي كل منا ان يعيش لأجل امر ما ولكن ما يحاول ان يقنعنا به يسوع انه ان لم يكن هو هذا الامر فالخذلان سيكون نصيبنا . بداية ً فإن اي امر اخر ستعيش لأجله سيستعبدك ، مهما كان هذا الامر فإنك ستظل تقول لنفسك ان عليك ان تحصل عليه ، وإلا فلا حاجة اليك لأن تشرق عليك شمس يوم جديد ومعني ذلك انه ان ظهر ما يهدد هذا الامر فسترتاع كثيراً وان ظهر شخص يعيق تحقيق هذا الامر فسيجتاحك الغضب وان اخفقت في تحقيق هذا الامر فلن تستطيع بتاتاً مسامحة نفسك لكن الامر الثاني هو انك ان نجحت فعلاً في تحقيق هذا الامر فإن ذلك لن يمنحك الاشباع الذي توقعته

اليك الاجابة المفاجئة: الخطية هي البحث عن مصدر اخر للخلاص غير الله والخطية تعني ان تضع نفسك مكان الله لتصير انت مخلص نفسك وربها ان جاز التعبير هذا هو تعريف الكتاب المقدس للخطية

تتصرف كأن حياتك الصالحة واعمالك الاخلاقية هي الاساس الذي يوجب علي الله ان يباركك ويستجيب صلواتك علي النحو الذي تريده وهكذا فأنت تتطلع الي صلاحك وجهودك الاخلاقية لكي تعطيك المعني والاحساس بالامان الذين يبحث عندهما الشخص غير المتدين بواسطة الجنس والمال والسلطة

وسيغمر طعم هذا الفرح قلوبهم بالعزاء وينعش نفوسهم في اقسي اللحظات واكثرها جفاءً وجدباً ، تماماً كما يفعل الماء الحي ، هذا ما جئتكم به ولهذا كانت تلك آيتي الاولي

أن النهاية ستشهد واقعاً غاية في الابهار وان الفرح سيفوق التصور، والاحساس بالاكتمال سيكون مذهلاً جداً حتي ان كل نفس مسكينة ستشعر معه بأن ما مرت به كأنه كان ليلة واحدة امضتها في فندق سئ

فإن غفرانك سيتسبب لك في ألم لذا فأنك لا يمكن ان تغفر خطأ دون ان تدفع انت ثمن هذا الخطأ

ليس من فرح يقدر ان يذيب قلبك اكثر من الفرح الناجم عن معرفتك بشخص ضحي من اجلك

يا مريم عندما اصعد واجلس عن يمين الآب فلن اتركك علي الاطلاق ولكني سأرسل روحي وبواسطة روحي يمكنك ان تلمسي حضوري وسلامي وحبتي علي الدوام نهاراً وليلاً ، ما اجمله وعد ان الايمان الحقيقي يربطك بشخص المسيح ليس فقط لمجرد الخلاص من عقوبة خطاياك بل ايضاً لإختبار علاقة المحبة المستمرة معه

كل ما عليك ان تفعله هو ان تقر بإنك خاطئ وتؤمن بأن يسوع المسيح مات عوضاً عنك وتجد راحتك في ما عمله هو لا في ما تقدمه انت من اعمال صالحة انت بحاجة لأن تستودعه حياتك اعترافاً منك بالجميل ازاء العمل الذي اكمله ، لكن مع ذلك كله عليك ان تدرك غيرك من الناس ينالون هذا الايمان بأشكال مختلفة

لا يوجد شخص يستثني من التجار والضيقات في واقع الامر ان كل من يحبهم الله كثيراً يجوزون في هذه جميعها لأن هذه الآلام وتلك الضيقات هي جزء من خطة الله المبهمة غالباً والصالحة دائماً لتغييرنا الي ما هو اعظم

ان كنا لا نعاني امراً ما في اللحظة الراهنة فنحن نميل لأن ننسب ذلك الي انفسنا وليست للامر عندنا اية علاقة بالتوفيق او بالنعمة بل السبب في ما نحن فيه - علي حد تفكيرنا - هو اننا نعيش حياتنا بالشكل الملائم والصحيح أليس كذلك ؟؟

ان الايمان بأن الصلاح الاخلاقي يؤدي الي حياة سالمة لهو تبسيط في فهمنا لمقاصد الله من جهتنا . ان حكمة الله لا متناهية وفي وسعه ان يري النهاية منذ البداية ومقاصده الصالحة من جهتنا مخفية عن انظارنا علي الطرف الآخر من البرية تماماً كما كان صبر ايوب في آلامه سبباً في ان يصير نموذجاً اعان مئات الملايين من البشر

فأن كل مشاعر الخوف والاضطراب وعدم الاحساس بالامان التي كانت تكتنفنا في ما سبق كل هذه المشاعر تبدأ في التلاشي حيث لا يصيبنا النجاح في العمل بالانتفاخ كما لا يصيبنا الفشل بالانكسار ولا تصير الدوافع التي تحرك حياتنا مرتبطة بالتعاسة التي يسببها لنا مظهرنا او حالتنا كما ان النقد لا يحبطنا كما كان يفعل قبلاً فصورتنا عن انفسنا تستقر آمنة في محبة لا يمكن ان نفقدها

هناك العديد من انواع الوقود التي تبقينا علي قيد الحياة لبعض الوقت لكن لا يوجد إلا وقود واحد نظيف لا يمكن ان يؤدي بنا بتاتاً الي الاعياء او الاحباط وليس هذا سوي محبة الله لك

فالقلب وفقاً للكتاب المقدس ليس مجرد مصدر للعواطف بل هو ايضاً نبع كل تعهداتنا الاساسية وآمالنا وثقتنا ومن القلب ينبع تفكيرنا ومشاعرنا وافعالنا فحيثما يضع القلب ثقته يسوغه العقل وتشتهيه العواطف وتنفذه الإراده فإن استطاع الشيطان ان يجعلك تقر بعقلك بالله صاحب النعمة المحبة ومن جهة اخري يجعل قلبك يعتقد انه يلزمك ان تفعل كذا وكذا لتصير مستحقاً وجديراً بالحب وشخصاً له قيمة فذلك اقصي ما يرضيه

ان الله عندما ينظر اليك ان كنت مسيحياً حقيقاً فهو يراك في المسيح ان وقفت وحدك علي احدي جانبي الميزان فأنت خاطئ ولكنك في يسوع كامل وجميل وبار وانت هنا تفقد هويتك في محاميك

بوصفك مسيحياً حقيقاً انت بليونير روحياً ولكنك تتألم بسبب عشرة دولارات وظيفة المحامي الثاني ان يحاج معك داخل محكمة قلبك ويقدم اليك الحجة عن هويتك الحقيقة في السيد المسيح ويقنعك انك غني اما وظيفتك انت فأن تنصت الي محاميك

سي اس لويس في كتابه الانفصال العظيم ، ان كنت في هذه الحياه لا تقول لله " لتكن مشيئتك " فالله في الحياة الاخري سيقول لك حتماً " حسناً فلتكن مشيئتك انت" ان كنت تريد التحرر من الله ستحصل حتماً علي ما رجوت وذلك التحرر لن يكون سوي العذاب بعينه

كلما امتدت علاقة الحب في الزمن وكلما تعمقت وصارت اكثر حميمية كان ألم الانفصال بين الاحباء محرقاً

في وسعك ان تتركي يدي يا مريم لأني قادر ان اعطيك ما هو افضل من يدي في يدك قادر ان اضع قلبي في قلبك

فيسوع هو الشخص الوحيد الذي يملك القدرة علي الايفاء بوعده ان يكون معنا الي الابد وما يعد به يتجاوز اصلاً كل فرحة رومانسية

ما يقوله بولس هنا هو انك اذا ذهبت الي الابدية ونظرت خلفك الي كل التاريخ من هذه الزاوية سيتضح لك ان الله جعل من الامور السيئة التي حدثت جزءاً من التاريخ واستخدمها علي النحو الذي جعلها في النهاية تتمم الامور المصممة في الاساس لتنجز عكسها وسنعرف نحن ننظر الي التاريخ بعين الابدية ان كل الشرور التي وقعت جلبت من المجد والصلاح ما يفوق عدم وقوعها

وعندما نقول ان يسوع يجعل كل الاشياء تعمل معاً للخير فيعني هذا ليس فقط الامور السيئة ستصير جزءاً من خطته بل ايضاً الامور الصغيرة

لكن خطط الله علي درجة كبيرة من التعقيد بما يتجاوز فهمنا
انك يجب ان تمتلئ بالسلام
هو الآن متحكم في كل شئ وهو جالس عن يمين الآب هل يمكنك ان تشعر بالراحة ؟

فعندما ينظر الله لك ويستمع اليك فهو لا يري الا جمالاً لا حدود له


عندما تسلم حياتك للسيد المسيح تحتاج لان تقول ما قالته مريم العذراء بشكل او بآخر لذا ينبغي لقلبك ان يقول "، يارب لا اعرف كل ما ستطلبه مني لكني سأفعل كل ما تقوله كلمتك سواء احببت ذلك ام لا وسأقبل بكل صبر كل ما تفعله في حياتي سواء فهمته ام لا

لماذا اتي يسوع المسيح الي عالمنا بواسطة فتاة تحمل دون زواج في ثقافة ابوية تقوم علي فكرتي الشرف والعار ؟ لم يكن الله محتاجاً لأن يتمم ذلك بهذه الطريقة لكن ظني انهىفعل ذلك ليقول لنا :" انا لا انجز اهدافي بالطريقة التي يتوقعها العالم بل بالطريقة العكسية تماماً ان قوتي في الضعف تكمل

انت تحتاج كما كانت مريم العذراء بحاجة لأن تفكر بعمق وتعبر عن شكوكك صراحة ثم تستسلم بعدها بالكامل للرب

As a former Young Life leader, I was hesitant about jumping in to this book as the story’s Keller dives into are Club Talk and Campaigners Essentials. After reading the into chapter I was reminded that, like The Office, The Gospel is so beautifully complicated that every minute you spend in these stories you learn something you didn’t notice the first time or even third time around. Keller covers topics of Who Jesus is, How to Love God and Others Well, and why it even matters if we do. Thanks to my small group at Columbia Presbyterian for choosing this as our book this spring!

This a decent but uneven work that is essentially a collection of addresses. The strongest chapter is undoubtedly the Gethsemane chapter. Keller is a well-intentioned guy with a pastor's heart, but he seems to make assumptions about liberal and capitalist society in the early 21st Century that are naive or reductionist.

Forgot how much I love reading Tim Keller. In the book, he broke down several interactions between Jesus and those who surrounded him. The intent was not necessarily excegetical, although it did contain tangible conclusions about the teaching of the text. Rather, the intent seemed more to exhibit the practice of Biblical meditation, with Keller thoughtfully observing the encounters and drawing logical conclusions regarding the person of Christ, His divinity, His heart, and more.

This book follows 5 encounters that Jesus had with various biblical characters and 5 events in Jesus life that reveal the deeper truths of the Gospel!

I have learned so much from this book. It filled me up till I felt like I would burst with new information and spiritual blessing! I am planning to go start it again!

I was reading this while doing a Bible study about the life of Jesus and watching The Chosen. Gaining insight into the life of Christ this way just makes me love Him more. Timothy Keller had a way of making complicated things make sense and is so compelling in his reasoning. Anyone with doubts will find answers and comfort in his books.

Really found this one distasteful. I enjoy a lot of Keller’s stuff, but this was not really a study of Jesus and these encounters as much as jamming them into what he wanted to say to modern “seekers.” As the book progressed, he went from Calvinist talking point to Calvinist talking point, always presenting such things as the “heart of Christianity.” Also seems strange to me that we can’t even study Jesus’ life without Keller feeling like he has to talk about the cross, even if the text is not close to the topic.

A helpful read during a time of spiritual doubt. Tim Keller offers intellectually stimulating and faith-building arguments for Jesus’ claims. He encourages people to think logically and doubt honestly, and then, to decide what they believe and how they will live. For the anxious and doubtful minds, this is the one!!!!!! Tim Keller is one of the most gifted men I know of. I have never read words that have better affirmed or encouraged or educated me. Not only was this book relatively life-changing, but it was exactly what I needed to read in this exact moment. Read!!!!!

I am now using this book as a devotional. It offers astounding insights in ways I’ve not read before. I’ve often wondered why Jesus said what he said to people he encountered in the New Testament. Many answers to my questions are provided here! You cannot help but know and love Him more after reading this book.
