Valerie Dearborn #1-3

The Valerie Dearborn Trilogy

Rate this book
From Book 1: In London for graduate school, Valerie Dearborn knows she's finally free. Her father and ex-almost-boyfriend are back in California and she's out of the vampire hunting biz for good. Or is she?

She draws the attention of Lucas, a 1600 year old Vampire, and King to his kind. He’s also wicked hot. As golden as Lucifer, and just as tempting, he makes Valerie an offer she can't refuse— help him find out if the Others (Empaths, Fey and Werewolves) still exist or he'll stop protecting those she loves.

Lucas tells her that Empaths were a Vampire’s biggest weakness before going extinct hundreds of years ago. While the Fey or a Werewolf might kill a Vampire, an Empath could enslave them, seducing or harming with emotions at will. The one detail he leaves out? Valerie is an Empath.

And after 1600 years of an emotionless existence, Lucas wants Valerie like a recovering alcoholic wants a wine cooler.

Can she keep those she loves alive, stop Lucas from munching on her, survive a fanged revolution and still find a way to have that boring, normal life she’s always wanted? Probably not, but she is definitely going to try!

This is a full length novel and contains adult content.

Caroline Hanson grew up in California and moved to London in order to dance and go to pubs. Eventually, she matured enough to marry and imported an Englishman, returning to the United States.

After passing the bar, she had two children and now tries to parent, read, write and play tennis. She's heard rumors that other mothers clean and cook but is putting in serious effort to make sure those rumors don't reach her family.

Caroline grew up listening to Brit pop and reading about vampires. As a teenager her favorite authors were Anne Rice and Jude Deveraux. Now she loves Laurell K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Laura Kinsale, Lisa Kleypas, Loretta Chase, Nalini Singh and JR Ward-- that's the short list.

She is also the proud owner of a WWJD t-shirt, (What Would Joss do?) which she hopes is apparent in her books.

She loves to hear from fans and her second book in the Valerie Dearborn Series, Love is Fear, will be published in December 2011.

A free short story called Bewitching the Werewolf was released in September on Smashwords.

While I liked the story content and the plot was reasonable I have to say this is one of the worst written books I have ever read...

The characters were likeable, though sometimes it did get on my nerves the way the Valerie kept asking the same questions over and over at different times in the books. She is frustrating at times but overall she is convincing in her role and really comes into her own in the last book.

My main gripe with this series as the atrocious way it is written and I'm actually surprised that it has been published with the amount of mistakes it has in it. Spelling mistakes, no spaces in between words, wrong usage of speech marks, using the wrong word in a sentence or leaving out a word, that really ought to be there, altogether! Just one example off the top of my head, in the last book is this sentence: Hot tears filled with eyes. Instead of 'her' eyes. Another example, I think more from the first or second book, is using 'him' instead of 'his', this happens more than once too. And then there was the improper use of speech marks! Instead of quotation marks around what is being said there would be one at the end of a non-spoken sentence and then one at the proper place at the end of a spoken sentence, so you'd get a sentence likes this: (Not from the actual book btw)In front of the house lay a cat." Look at that cat!" exclaimed Lucy. This was extremely frustrating.

It is very hard to get lost in the story when you are constantly having to re-read sentences or paragraphs because there are errors and I found I either slowed my reading pace down to catch the mistakes as I came across them or skipped a paragraph here and there to get the overall picture of what's going on so I wouldn't get bogged down and annoyed at all the errors I saw.

Bottom line, the story is a good one but I don't think I'll be purchasing the next instalment coming out next year...

So I tried. I mean I really tired to like these books. I read all 3 cover to cover. There were moments that made me laugh. I didn't hate the books BUT I just couldn't connect with the characters or the overall story. It was like the whole time I was waiting to get sucked into the story & get invested in these characters, but that never happened. The happy (ish) ending didnt even give me warm fuzzies. There were a few steamy scenes & Val had some funny moments but overall I just couldn't connect to the characters.

I loved Hanson's Novella Bewitching the Werewolf and was hoping for more quick wit and sexy times but was rather disappointed.

The series started strong, the first book way very appealing a d had me captivated. I liked that Valerie was confident in her sexuallity but as I continued reading, her unhealthy attachment to Jack, even after he admitted to being with her just so she wouldn't be with Lucas, really began to lose my attention. I would have thought that in the second book, Valerie would have been able to mature and move on but instead she continued to act more childish.

I would have really loved a better explanation of Rachel, how she could be a vampire AND witch. I did like the different take on the supernatural world, especially how vampires went crazy over time with their mortality.

I really like these novels, very detailed and beautifully written. Overall it was a great story and was very pleased that Lucas and Valerie managed to have a normal life after all the craziness they went through. However I am disappointed that I have to wait for another book to come out some time in 2014 to find out what happened with the other characters in the story. But of course Im already invested in the story and I will wait until I can learn more about them in the next book.

Compelling Story

Compelling Story

After reading the first book for free I just had to read the rest. The storyline was captivating. I have a love-hate relationship with Lucas and found Val to be annoying but damn I couldn't stop turning the pages just to see what happens next.

Not a horrible fantasy read

This trilogy wasn't what I usually read. I enjoyed most of it . The author jumps around a bit ,which can be confusing at times. The second book was my favorite
