Otto needs to do a chore for his mother before he can play so he is grouchy. When he goes to do the chore, his friends on the farm tell him the same thing--do the chore and stop being grouchy. He is not happy so completes the chore to his aunt. When he gets there, he sees that she is sick so he asks how he can help her. She tells him. He feels better when he leaves and starts thinking about what he did. He has a different attitude upon returning home.

I enjoyed this story. I loved the illustrations. They were beautiful. I liked how the story taught very gently to help others. I also liked that his friends told him to be helpful and not grouchy. This is a great story for those just learning to read.

Otto, the owl, is all upset and grouchy because he can’t play and has to help his mother deliver soup to his aunt. On his way to his aunts he runs into the farm animals, pond friends and no one will play. Once he delivers the soup, he stays a while and helps his aunt –and felt better. Going back home, with the chores done, his mother lets him play but he finds that helping all the barn animals and friends puts him in a good mood and he feels better about himself and is no longer grouchy!

Book Title: Otto the Grouchy Owl

Short Description of the Book: In this story, Michael Yu writes using a great way of sequencing. Otto is a young owl that is told to take soup to his Aunt but he had rather play. He does as his mother told him and starts going to his Aunt’s house but along the way he stops to see different friends and complain about his chore. I would use this story to teach my students how to sequence events correctly.

Focus: Narrative Features I would use in a mini lesson:

1). Sequencing information: Michael Yu writes this story by giving steps that Otto has to make to get to his Aunt’s house. He is upset that he can’t go play with his friends so he stops along the way to his Aunt’s house to grumble to different characters in the story. Yu sequences events while Otto is also learning a valuable lesson in helping others.

2). Lessons: Yu uses his writing to teach a valuable lesson. Otto learns that he should always be willing to help his family and friends. Yu has an incredible way of writing while showing ways of teaching children without them actually knowing they are learning a lesson.

Mini-Lesson:

1. After introducing the book, Otto the Grouchy Owl, we will discuss the lesson learned from reading the book. We will then discuss how we should try to teach a lesson in our writings. The students will brainstorm different books they have read that teaches a lesson and talk about the lesson they teach.
2. Discuss how sequencing works and how you can write using a sequence of events. Talk about how Yu wrote his book by using the sequence of characters along the way to Otto’s Aunt’s house.
3. The teacher will tell students to jot notes on various lessons you can teach in your writing.
4. Using the lessons they jotted, the students will be told to write a story using a lesson. They will be told to use a specific sequence in their events to show how the story flows.
5. The students will conference with the teacher with their writings and discuss any questions they have about their sequencing or their lesson they are trying to teach in their story.
6. Students will revise their writings after conferencing.

What I expect my students to learn from the lesson.
• I want my students to learn how to write using sequencing of events or through sequencing like Yu did with the characters in his story.
• I want my students to learn how to teach in their writings. To write with a purpose.
• I want my students to be able to revise their writings appropriately.

Otto the grouchy owl was the perfect book that belongs in any classroom because it addressees many key points that children need to know in life. This stories begins just as the title states. Otto an Owl who just wants to have fun and doesn't want to help his mother. Although as the stories continues, Otto is out delivering soup for his mother but begins complaining to the horse, pig, cow, and the duck. Each Character approaches Otto with the same advice to appreciate helping others. By the end of the story Otto sees how important it is to help others and not be grouch. Moreover, as you can see by my description this book teaches the young reader some valuable life lessons. For instance this book should how Otto in the beginning was a selfish grouch and through help from others he saw how important it was to be considerate and helpful. This book is great for that lesson it teaches as many young children do feel like Otto and just want to play and forget to be kind and helpful. Another part of the book that makes this a great recommendation is how realistic the animal characters were as animals don't tend to stand up straight on two feet, the book gave a very different aspect for children to see. This aspects portrays ordinary life through animals which helps engages a reader looking for something different.

I really liked this book I read it to both children and they seemed to have enjoyed it as well.
My oldest is a grouch and doesn't like to help at all, so when I started reading this book I figured he could connect to Otto.
Otto's mother wants him to take some soup to his aunt who is sick but while taking it to him he passes his friends who give him some sound advice and at the end of the story Otto learns that helping others without being grouchy is more fun. It is a great lesson within the story for kids to hear and learn from. The pictures were very well done and went perfect with the story being told.
K liked it all and said that his favorite was when Otto took soup to his aunt. Abbi didn't have much to say just that she liked it.

Michael Yu uses this short children' book, "Otto the Grouchy Owl," in order to teach young children about helping others. Otto is always cranky, and he is not happy when his mother asks him to take some soup to his aunt. Along the way, he tries unsuccessfully to find someone to commiserate with, but eventually he discovers the good feeling that lending a helping hand can bring. The illustrations are quite realistic and colorful, although Otto is depicted in a rather disconcerting and humanlike manner with human arms and fingers.

This book reminded me so much of my neice. Otto the grouchy owl doesn’t want to help his mom. He only wants to play. His mom insists he take some soup to his aunt. He complains to all of the barnyard animals about having do to something to help his mom He learns very quickly that sometimes helping others not only makes them feel better, but makes him feel better as well.
