I started this book to continue to see Angelo Pardi live and fight and to know how he would love Pauline de Theus. There is no Pauline in this book, just the fighting of the war between Austria and Italy in the 19th century. I'm disappointed, therefore, but I still admire Giono's writing. The expressions and metaphors are unexpected, and the story's rhythm is like a galloping horse. We sometimes find the Chartreuse's atmosphere and the narrator's tender gaze on his hero.
