The Egyptian Museum in Cairo houses the world's most celebrated collection of Egyptian antiquities. For the first time, this vast heritage is revealed in all its unparalleled glory ill hundreds of magnificent full-color photographs -- including many breathtaking close-ups and details -- and texts by some of the world's leading Egyptologists. Alongside the legendary treasures of Tutankhamun are some of the most impressive examples of Egyptian sculpture, wall paintings, and decorative art from the pyramid complexes of Giza, Saqqara, and Dahshur, the royal necropolis of Thebes, and the Temple of Karnak, among other fascinating sites.
From the finest jewelry to the most imposing statues, every artifact is captured in startling clarity -- with special lighting techniques that evoke, as never before, the awe and wonder inspired by these fabulous ancient treasures.
I was very pleased to get this huge coffee table book from Amazon. The original list price was $75.00 and it shows. It is a very large book, it is over 14 x 10 and almost 2 inches thick. It has very nice paper with glossy photographs. The book starts with a history of how the Egyptian Museum came to be. Originally, many of Egypt's temples and ruins were looted by everyone and anyone until Egypt realized they needed to preserve their past.
The bulk of the book is stunning photographs of the collection at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo which spans from the ancient pre-dynastic days, the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom. Each piece of art is accompanied by text that puts the art in context. It may contain some history about who the piece is of, how it was found or the meaning behind it.
The photographs are beautiful; the collection includes everything from ornate jewelry, elaborate sarcophagus, statues, figurines, pottery and even furniture.
The book also contains a detailed table of contents and index for easily finding particular works that are of interest to you.
If you are fascinated by Ancient Egypt, this book was wonderful. It made me want to book a trip.
Unless you've been to dozens of Egyptian collections, you've never seen the range of first-rate art displayed here -- unless, of course, you've already been to Cairo. Makes me want to go out & buy a ticket to Egypt. Some of this stuff is just astonishing. The jewelry is (often) 'Art-Deco', not by coincidence, since much of this material was unearthed in the early 20th century. And if you've only seen the knock-offs, wait til you see the originals! There are wall-paintings that, if they didn't have papyrus plants, you'd think were Chinese. And the little painted wood-carvings, with marvelous scenes from everyday life -- and with colors so bright, they could have been your grandmother's, instead of being 4,000 years old. There's a lot to be said for using the desert for cemeteries....
Best Egyptian-artifact photo book I've seen. Don't miss it.
Beautiful book filled with large, glossy images of artifacts, sarcophagi, tomb treasures, statues, fragments of hieroglyphic wall carvings and expert information from various professionals in the field. Each item has a small photographic representation so you can see the entire object then a larger close up for detail as well as information such as the item's height and what it is made of and any historical details that are known...such as a bracelet from the tomb of a certain pharaoh. Such a great introduction to the museum at Cairo! Wish I could see these things up close but this book is a great representation.
