Munich’s Oktoberfest, held each year since 1810 from late September through the first weekend in October, is one of the most famous events in Germany. It is a beer drinker’s paradise—over the course of sixteen days, more than six million visitors consume nearly two million gallons of specially brewed Oktoberfest beer. For the first-time visitor to the Wies’n (a meadow near Munich’s center dedicated to the festival), Oktoberfest can be a little overwhelming. Fortunately, Moses Wolff hasn’t missed a day of Oktoberfest in years, and he knows the festival like the back of his hand.
If you are going to Oktoberfest read this book first: the information on reservations and proper behavior by itself is worth the read. Put this book on your travel destination list if you plan to go to Germany. You will be very happy to understand the different behavior that is expected in each beer tent.
A thorough take on Munich's Oktoberfest. We check out the origin, history, and current state of this annual celebration. Each tent, beer garden, and coffee house is described, reviewed, and rated for food, flirtation factor, family appropriateness, music, host, and so on. The author includes some decent photos throughout, as well.
I picked this up to learn more about the festival and put it down with an incredible desire to hop a plane to Munich ASAP! I rated this 5 stars despite some minor grammar issues that I attribute to sloppy translation from German. Could have benefited from stronger editing and proofreading by an English speaker.
