Provides a detailed analysis of the prospects for a manned mission to Mars before the end of the twentieth century, discussing technological capabilities, transport methods, fuel, human factors, and potential problems
Former NASA space shuttle engineer James Oberg was one of the first to write a book-length proposal of a manned Mars program, and even though this dates from the mid 80s, it is still one of the best, especially in terms of scope and fairness. Oberg avoids a common trait in many of these proposal books by exploring a range of options without committing to one pet idea at the expense of others. The point here was to look at possibilities and what could be achieved in that era. Oberg has a talent for explaining space matters in a highly readable form, and that has served this and all of his books well.
