370 books1,758 followersBoris Vian was a French polymath: writer, poet, musician, singer, translator, critic, actor, inventor and engineer. He is best remembered for novels such as L’Écume des jours and L'Arrache-cœur (translated into English as Froth on the Daydream and Heartsnatcher, respectively). He is also known for highly controversial "criminal" fiction released under the pseudonym Vernon Sullivan and some of his songs (particularly the anti-war Le Déserteur). Vian was also fascinated with jazz: he served as liaison for, among others, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis in Paris, wrote for several French jazz-reviews (Le Jazz Hot, Paris Jazz) and published numerous articles dealing with jazz both in the United States and in France.

I co-edited this book. I love it of course. Also I promise you of this date that there is not a better document out there on Paris night clubs circ. 1949/1950.
Boris Vian himself wrote the text as a tongue-in-cheek insider's look at the Saint Germain des-Prés scene that took place right after the war. Here you get images & text regarding his legendary clubs - Tabou and Club St. Germain. It was the perfect location for the arts at that time to meet and dance. Miles Davis, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jean Cocteau, Buster Keaton, Simon DeBeavour, Raymond Queneau, Duke Ellington and the list goes on and on. I am very proud of this book!

Един съвсем друг Виан, но форматът на Наръчника го предполага.
Следвоенен Париж и този негов уютен и живописен квартал, пълен с култови заведения и известни личности - поети, писатели, артисти, музиканти, певци. Техните понятия за живот, морал, ценности и забавления срещу тези на журналистите. За едните Виан пише с много любов и привързаност, за другите - със сарказъм. Живи, картинни и доста забавни описания на баровете, ресторантите и "екзистенциалните мази", кратки и точни портрети на обитателите им, украсени с пикантни подробности.
Книгата претендира за луксозно издание. Много богата на илюстрации, в странен, почти квадратен формат и (съжалявам, че трябва да го отбележа) с натрапващо се небрежна редакция. Не се научих да чета интуитивно, прелитайки през страниците и подобни неща, привидно дреболии, все още ме дразнят. "Изядени" букви и интервали, поръсени запетаи из изреченията, съвсем не на мястото си и дразнещо изписване на наименования. Нищо против личния усет на преводачи и редактори, но е добре, преди да се изпише нещо, да се провери как е възприето да се изписва и как е популярно. Биха се спестили доста нелепици като СилвиА, коЕнтро, Жертрюд Щайн (т.е. Гертруд Щайн)... А "Упражнения по стил" на Реймон Кьоно има вече няколко издания у нас и някак си не върви в Наръчника да бъде "Упражнения В стил".

This is the French re-issue of the Manual of Saint Germain des Prés, and it's not as good as the first editon, due to the fact that a lot of the illustrations and images were taken out - I presume for budget reasons.
My edition in English is fully illustrated and it's quit a remarkable book. The text alone is superb. Vian writes about the social life of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the leading characters that take part in the playtime that takes place in the nighttime. Essential book regarding Paris life in 1949.

A trip to a jungle, it's inhabitant species, their behavioral endeavors, caves and ritual dances (plus its systematical misreading by diverse range of alien visitors). An hilarious and sharp atlas to the guts of a legend. The most enjoyable and intelligently funny book I have read in a while.

J'ai lu cet ouvrage pour avoir des témoignages de la vie à Saint-Germain après guerre. Il est très fourni, écrit avec une plume humouristique et avec le point de vue de Vian. Le plan du livre est assez étrange, il est comme un guide touristique par thème.

Cet ouvrage posthume, rédigé en 1950, est effectivement d'une grande utilité, ou du moins était, il faudrait peut-être que M. Vian songe à une édition mise à jour. Il joue sur les codes d'un certain nombre d'ouvrages utilitaires ainsi rassemblés sous la dénomination de "manuel" : le guide touristique, sous-espèce savante, plutôt Joanne que Pudlo ; le dictionnaire biographique ; et même la notice pharmaceutique puisqu'il se referme sur une rubrique "Posologie et mode d'emploi". Cette variété générique qui ne s'écarte jamais du louable souci d'être utile au lecteur signe en elle-même l'ouvrage de la plume ludique et facétieuse de l'auteur de "L'Équarissage pour tous".
Dans le détail, il lui arrive d'être inégal : on se demande même si la nomenclature des rues du quartier, heureusement assez brève, est vraiment achevée, tant n'y figurent que des renseignements factuels et apparemment exacts, à peine plus développés que dans le guide des stations de métro jadis diffusé par les SDF parisiens. De même, dans la première partie, certaines envolées polémiques contre les "pisse-copie" et autres journaux racontant n'importe quoi au sujet de Saint-Germain-des-Prés et utilisant sophistiquement les moeurs prétendument décadentes de la population locale pour stigmatiser sans la lire la philosophie existentialiste ont perdu beaucoup d'intérêt à mesure que même l'oubli des siècles a négligé les victimes de la fureur vianesque, ce qui n'est pas rien, car si ça se trouve, certains sont encore vivants.
Cette polémique hors d'âge met cependant en valeur l'essentiel du projet de Vian : fixer, tant qu'il est temps, une sorte d'instantané du foisonnement artistique et vital du quartier avant qu'il ne se fige pour l'éternité dans une légende déjà en bonne partie formée. Vian connaît suffisamment son affaire pour montrer les racines de la floraison subite du quartier à la Libération ; il rappelle aussi que Saint-Germain fut, chose rare, un creuset où ce qui serait, plus tard, catégorisé en culture savante et culture populaire ne se distinguait délibérément pas : Merleau-Ponty et le be-bop, Prévert et Roger Blin, Cocteau et les Frères Jacques, Giacometti et Yves Robert. Il dit aussi des choses que la mémoire a oubliées : notamment les tenues ostensiblement multicolores des zazous zegzistentialistes, avec chaussettes rayées à l'horizontale façon arc-en-ciel malade, choses que nous n'avons vues que dans le noir et blanc des photos, ou le caractère des tenanciers des avenants bistrots où l'on se rassemblait pour boire un coup avant d'aller vivre une vie nocturne dans les caves.
Les meilleures pages se recommandent, je l'ai déjà sous-entendu, par la fantaisie de l'auteur, notamment dans une brillante ouverture où il imagine le quartier comme une formation non pas architecturale mais géologique. (L'auteur aurait une formation scientifique que ça ne m'étonnerait pas). Les nombreux personnages évoqués, restés célèbres pour beaucoup, pas pour tous, sont éventuellement destinataires de vannes strictement personnelles, mais même cette fausse vacherie témoigne de l'affection joyeuse, évidente, au minimum du respect, que Vian éprouvait pour presque tous, au moins parce qu'ils avaient le talent d'être, ensemble, Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

Bu ilginç semtin turist rehberini ise Boris Vian yazmış. Boris Vian’ın kaleme aldığı bir turistik rehberini merak etmemek elde değil. Saint-Germain-des-Prés günümüzde hâlâ Paris’in en çok ilgi çeken semtlerinden olsa da en çok 1940’larda, 50’lerde yaşananlar da merak edilir kuşkusuz. Özellikle savaş sonrasında büyük bir değişim yaşanmış, semt kültürel değişimin ve o değişimin öncüleri olan gençlerin merkezi olmuş bir bölge. Boris Vian da o yıllarda semtin en ilginç simalarından.
Saint-Germain-des-Prés’de özellikle Tabou gibi mahzenlerde kurulmuş caz kulüplerinde yaşananlar kısa sürede basının ilgisini çekmiş ve hemen her gün uydurma haberlerle semti, semtteki mekanları kötülemeye başlamışlar. Basına yansıyanlar aslında kültürel bir çatışmanın sonucu. Eskimiş bir kültür anlayışının yerini yenisi alıyor ve muhafazakârlarla özellikle varoluşçular ve caz severlerde simgeleşen yeni kültürün öncüleri çatışıyor. Semtte yaşananlar yozlaşmanın, ahlaksızlığın ve tabii ki kültürel bozulmanın tipik örnekleri olarak değerlendiriliyor. Varoluşçu gençlerin giyimleri, halleri, tavırları da garipseniyor, aşağılanıyor.
Boris Vian’ın semt hakkında yazmaya karar vermesi de basında yer alan ve büyük birçoğu yalan yanlış, çarpıtma bilgilerle dolu bu haberler. Saint-Germain-des-Prés hakkında doğru bilgiler vermek için masanın başına oturuyor ve bunu o zaman çok ilgi çekip okunan turistik bir rehber biçiminde kaleme alamaya karar veriyor. This got bought from me for a present two days ago. I did have a look through it a while back, but gotta re-order it. Some awesome pics of Greta Garbo from memory.
...well, I'm not really READING this per se. I haven't got around to getting this again, so I found a copy at work and am pretty happy to go through it looking at the awesome pictures and having a bit of a laff pretending I can read French. Amazing.
The copy is a 1974, bright royal blue, with a great pic of Vian on the front, and yellow writing (there's that colour again!).
...well, I'm not really READING this per se. I haven't got around to getting this again, so I found a copy at work and am pretty happy to go through it looking at the awesome pictures and having a bit of a laff pretending I can read French. Amazing.

June 27, 2011Boris Vian lays out the "existential" party scene of late-1940s Paris, a world of jazz and cellar clubs and celebrity, both local and international, which was frequently attacked by the bourgeois press -- hence Vian's defense in the form of this intermittently witty, charming book, done in the style of a field guide. To be sure, it's not for everyone, but I'm glad it exists.
