Oh boy, I needed my notes to get at least some of the content of this book back into my head. Apparently the book was that standard. Also right at the start we had a main character that is sort of alien to the world, very quiet and controlled and not like the other boys in the orphanage... sounds familiar. And this is only my third book by the author.
In fact Florian looks and acts like another but significantly less abused version of Alexander from her other books. At first I thought Xavier was another version of Roland but he acts more typically bad boy/rebel and his look of blue-green eyes, bronze skin and dark hair looks different than Roland, however the descriptions are both kind of non-descript, especially Xavier could be from all over the place based on his looks.
And Xavier had foster fathers who beat him and him and Florian have a kind of instinctual pull to each other... kind of familiar. However since younger Florian is stalking older Xavier I would say that is something less used in these types of stories.
Plus, who is/was Karl? He just appeared and then disappeared.
Furthermore, let's be honest here, the whole magical connection/pull is in tune with the fantasy nature of this book, but it is also pretty lazy when you want to develop a relationship.
There might also be a slight hint of colorism, with the darker sinned Xavier being the more dangerous and troubled. Plus why does he talk about Florian as being taboo because he is a minor if Xavier is only 17 himself? Did the author forget his age?
At 13.0% I was at: Lets ignore the stereotypical "I am not good for this nice boy" drama and concentrate on the bigger problem:
What is it with this constant talk about Florian's age? The story stated itself that Xavier is not even 18 and that Florian is only two years or so younger, so all this angst and fear about being on trial for child fucking is nonsense.
Most of this stuff was pretty standard "I am no good for you" fantasy romance, including that the older guy fucks the younger. However it was surprising that Xavier develops his wings first. And I must say that fucking in flight is something I had only scene once before.
But that was only the first story, let's get to the next.
In that one considered that the author called this story "Wolfangel" it's a pretty dumb decision to have Lukas' family appear like wandering illegals instead of the werewolves that they apparently are. Seriously, with a title like that you kind of know what you are in for right away.
Sadly, this author doesn't know how to make necessary exposition via dialogue without clumsy text. This could have been cut by half and it would have had the same amount of information. More details could have been given in a later and more quiet scene.
As for world building: soulmates, transformed by the moon into violent monsters and created by a goddess... except for the last part this sounds pretty standard.
Also the goddess creating them is Hecate... yeah, I can see that making sense, she is connected to dogs, the moon and magic. This is surely a better choice than some others I have seen.
Also Lukas is a muscled, dark-haired, olive or copper skinned (depending on the light) werewolf who tops the smaller, blond and male human Nathaniel... never heard that before... Seriously I can think of only a single story where the human tops the werewolf first, some flip-floppers are also there yes, but even then only over time, not straight away and never where the werewolf is a strict bottom.
And if the "seen that" doesn't stop there, we got even more stuff that I have seen before: The werewolf has a knot on his penis that only loosens when the wolf inside of him is sure the human is his possession... yeah.... reeaaalllllyyyyy creative there author.
Sure the stuff here is relatively harmless, but is it really so difficult not to copy from all these authors out there? I knew beforehand that in the last story there would be a full pack and that the Alpha tops the Omega exclusively. And what did I get? The last story with the pack was exactly as expected. Screw this.
