The Battle of Seven Oaks: And the Violent Birth of the Red River

Rate this book
For many Métis, the Battle of Seven Oaks is the historic moment when their people first stood up for their rights as a nation against England and the Hudson's Bay Company. This book chronicles the dramatic struggle between the North West company and the Hudson's Bay company, out of which the Red River settlement (and later Winnipeg) was born.

This was one of those impulse buys from the gift shop at Fort Edmonton Park. It was an easy read, but was about what one might expect from a book about historic events in a series titled “True Canadian Amazing Stories.”

Perhaps the conflict that this "battle" was the most violent episode of was best, and most succinctly, described in the voice of Echo, who in the graphic novel series ”A Girl Called Echo. Vol. I. Pemmican Wars” sums up the conflict by saying “The companies keep fighting and stealing from each other and it is all of us who suffer.”
