Renowned Civil War historian James I. "Bud" Robertson's "Civil War Sites in Virginia: A Tour Guide" expertly explores the commonwealth's Civil War sites for those hoping to gain greater insight and understanding of the conflict.
James I. Robertson Jr. is an Alumni Distinguished Professor of History at Virginia Tech. He published the definitive adult biography of Stonewall Jackson, Stonewall Jackson: The Man, the Soldier, the Legend, and also wrote Standing Like a Stone Wall for young adults. He lives in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Originally published in 1982, this book is by now extremely outdated and obsolete. His directions to the sites are vague and have likely changed in the 33 years since publication. Additionally, the blurbs about each site are short and generic, not exactly the type of information that would inspire a person to go on a Civil War road trip. Some of the information he types is also either wrong (saying the war ended at Appomattox) or pro-Confederate.
The book has a good general idea, but there are many updated Civil War tour guides published since then that would be much more worth your time.
A very good summary of sites in Virginia which had to do with battles, strongholds, logistics, famous persons, etc. Gives detailed directions on how to find the sites, when open and admission charges, if any. A must resource for Civil War buffs or others interested in exploring this rich era of the American experience.
