This volume is for those who really wish to make a study of John's Gospel, to know the deeper veins of its great message, and to understand more thoroughly the conflict between belief and unbelief which it sets forth. Three parts make up this book. First there is a consideration of the structure of the Gospel of John. The second, and by far the longest, section is an exposition of the text of the Gospel, taking up the career of Jesus according to the six periods that seem to be suggested by the Gospel writer. Finally, there is a topical analysis of the Gospel, summarizing its contents under several headings, including authorship, vocabulary, signs, symbols, and interviews. A bibliography lists some of the more useful resources that the student may wish to consult.
After a wonderful introduction, the body of the commentary drops off a bit in usefulness. It still stimulated me quite a bit in thinking through each passage. His analysis of John's purpose statement was the best part.
This was the text book for Gospel of John at FWBBC. It was the first commentary I had ever read and it showed me things about the biblical text that were thrilling. It sealed my interest in Biblical studies and gave me an appreciation for Merrill Tenney.
This was the textbook for my John class that I took from Moody. I really enjoyed it, once I got over the dry first few pages. It was enlightening and really helped put much of the book of John into perspective. I believe it will be a textbook that will get used again, long after the class is over!
I would agree with Peter's review. I liked the section on structure and the purpose statement best. If not for this section of the book, I would have given it two or three stars. The topical analysis at the end was also helpful. There were parts of his exposition that I did not like, but overall, the book is good.
Took me a while to get through this book, but it was SO worth it! This man of God has some incredible insights and powerful applications to make from the Word of God.
