This is the fifth story in the popular, multi-author series, Daughters of Power: The Capital.
"What happens in the elevator, stays in the elevator, right?"
Trapped between floors with his spitfire employee, media mogul Liam Crowe can't control the chemistry.
First, Francesca Orr is calling her new boss names in the boardroom; next, she's kissing him!
Now Liam has some choice names for Francesca: fiancée, maybe even wife. Because the only way to keep control of the scandal-plagued news network he's just acquired is if he settles down, and Francesca is perfect fake-fiancée material.
But when she goes along with the plan, things get real -- really fast -- because there's nothing fake about Francesca ….
Andrea Laurence has been a lover of reading and writing stories since she learned to read at a young age. She always dreamed of seeing her work in print and is thrilled to finally be able to share her special blend of sensuality and dry, sarcastic humor with the world. A dedicated West Coast girl transplanted into the Deep South, she's working on her own "happily ever after" with her new husband and a golden retriever puppy.
Good book. Liam has purchased the network after the previous owner was arrested in a phone hacking scandal (No Stranger to Scandal). Francesca is giving him problems because she is advocating for her projects and not backing down. She has called him some uncomplimentary names, in Italian which he doesn't speak. There is something about her which has really gotten his attention and when they get trapped in an elevator together things get pretty heated. When his aunt, who owns a good chunk of the network's stock, threatens to sell those shares unless he settles down, he approaches Francesca to help him out.
I really liked both Liam and Francesca. Liam has good ideas for bringing the network back from its scandalous past but he is being pressured by his aunt. His attraction to Francesca has him thinking that maybe he can kill two birds with one stone - save the network and get closer to Francesca. He figures that if they pretend to be engaged he can eventually convince his aunt to back down. When he makes a bargain with Francesca he also manages to show her how good they can be together. It was fun seeing him work so hard to remind himself that this was a fake engagement and that it would end while at the same time immersing himself in the pleasure of Francesca's presence in his life. When they end up having to marry he's still fighting his feelings. I liked the way he ended up saving his relationship with Francesca.
Francesca was a very interesting heroine. Her mother is Italian and her father is Irish. There is a lot of passion in her personality. I loved the way she stands up for her projects in the board meeting. When she and Liam get trapped in the elevator she has no problem giving into her passions but her mind takes control when they are rescued and she has to face what happened. When Liam comes to her with his proposition she really isn't sure until she sees something she considers a good omen for the idea. I liked the way that she and Liam worked together to make things better at the network. She found herself liking him more and more and those feeling quickly grew into love. She wanted to think that things could work out but she kept seeing signs that things were going to go wrong. I have to admit that her superstitiousness kind of irritated me. Her mother made a comment that I really liked "If you believe in your heart that you are doomed before you start, you will be right." She allowed those superstitions to cause her to lose faith in the possibilities. She very nearly threw it all away because of them.
There were some really good scenes that kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. The elevator scene was definitely hot and showed their chemistry to perfection. The wedding planning sessions with Ariella and Scarlet were fantastic. The wedding cake confrontation was a real page turner to see what Angelica would do. I absolutely loved Liam's conversation with Francesca's father and his aunt. Of course, the final resolution with Liam and Francesca was the perfect coming together of the two of them.
This romance is so dreamy. I seriously could not put it down while reading it. I love Francesca's character. She is so down to earth, caring, compassionate. Liam is yummy and sexy. He has just the right amount of alpha-ness to him to make him very sexy. He found a spunky, feisty, & loving woman in Francesca. No way he could resist her!
Early this morning, I finished reading A Very Exclusive Engagement by Andrea Laurence. Who doesn't love a quick read with a fake engagement or a conniving aunt? I for one love enjoy a good fake engagement.
From the first moment Francesca Orr and Liam Crowe were stuck in the elevator the steam from that encounter hadn't evaporated. Boy was that a hot moment. Now Liam was give an ultimatum from his Aunt Beatrice (the Queen Bee) to be married within the year. Fortunately, he found the perfect co-conspirator to trick the Queen Bee. Yet, nothing ever works out according the plan. The goal is to make it through this farce unscathed, but it seems the heart doesn't understand the goals.
Francesca is one of the most fascinating heroine I have read so far. Taking her nona's superstitions to heart she looks for signs to guide through her life. One of those signs helps her decided to go along with Liam's plan. Liam is definitely a yummy hero with his blue eyes and dark hair. Yet he is willing to do whatever to get American News Service (ANS) back on track. Even take on a fake fiancée to secure the controlling shares of the company.
The fake fiancée troupe is a lot fun to read. I mean you know they are going be force to marry, no matter what. However, you always wonder who will be the first to cave and fall in love or wonder if both characters fall in love at the same time and don't want to admit it. See a lot of fun. Plus, Liam and Francesca have a lot of heat to begin with and this adds to the complication of their liaison.
I actually found A Very Exclusive Engagement delightful to read. I enjoyed the chemistry between Liam and Francesca and how it was compounded with the fake engagement. Add the Queen Bee into the mix, and you know it can only lead to trouble. So, if you love fake engagements with meddlesome family members, you might like to read A Very Exclusive Engagement.
This book was very intriguing. You have Liam who is the new owner of the company and Francesca who wants to save her charitable program. Tempers are flaring in the boardroom then fate laughs at them by getting them both stuck in an elevator. Now sparks are flying for a whole new reason, but reality rears it's ugly head. Then Liam's aunt gives him an ultimatum to secure his ownership of the company. Now Liam must convince Francesca the perfect candidate for a fake engagement. What starts out as fake soon becomes feeling more real and real. What are these two going to do when hearts are on the line instead of business? Read and find out! It's a very enjoyable read with characters who have boundless chemistry. The ending was perfect and makes you realize that's why you read romance for the good to your heart feeling you get.
A Very Exclusive Engagement isn’t the first Andrea Lawrence book I’ve read, but I think it finally made me stand up and take note.
Liam and Francesca clash at first, he’s taking over the company for which she works, and in trying to save it, might be curtailing some of her projects. She mutters something about him in Italian and it allows him to take an active interest in her. He flags her down as she walks towards the elevator, and just after the doors close and the descent begins; the power goes out. Read More
Honestly, I'm not usually a fan of romance novels, but this I actually enjoyed. I have wasted many a late hour glued to the pages, just hoping everything works out for Liam and Francesca, surprisingly so since I really hated Liam at first. With what sex scenes there are, they're tactful and not stretched out like some books. Even though a lot of their drama mixes into some everyday romance issues, I found myself worrying for them, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you're not a fan of this genre, I say give it a try and you'll be surprised. I was given my copy free from Goodreads First Reads.
Yowza! This author can write a steamy scene and she gets right to it! I read 3/4 of this book at the emergency room waiting on my mother to be treated. This was the perfect escape from a hospital waiting room. Rooting for Liam and Francesca and their crazy plan kept the pages turning swiftly. I have to admit getting a bit impatient with these two and what was right before their eyes, but that made the ending SO much more satisfying! It's not only a "good read"...it's a wonderful read and I highly RECOMMEND the trip to the Amazon website to order yours!
This was the first book I have read by Andrea Laurence. I really liked the Washington DC setting, and I liked that the heroine was a mature adult who knew what she wanted. Francesca and Liam are only engaged to fool his aunt, but feelings become real quickly for Francesca. Liam takes a little longer to realize his feelings. There is always something great about reading a Harlequin romance. It is of course well edited and no grammar mistakes. Good story, believable dialog, and I really enjoyed the book. I received this book for free as part of goodreads first reads.
This book pushed a lot of buttons for me. Little plot points that drive me insane, mostly because they are either overused, or point to signs of a lazy author who doesn't take the time to actually think of plausible conflicts to drive a wedge between the hero and the heroine.
The first button was the whole you have to get married to inherit X amount of money. Ok, maybe this isn't as big a button as the whole 'I don't want to inherit... I don't need your money... wait a minute, you want to give it to me?' attitude that Liam has.
The second button, and this is a biggie, is the whole lets just assume things about the other person, and refuse to talk about anything. This is a major life-changing decision the two of them are making, and neither one of them actually TALK to the other about their feelings -- they are only talking to each other about the logistics of the thing, then make assumptions about the important stuff. This right here is why I only rated this book a two, because it's lazy plotting.
And third, the whole elevator scene? I'm sure a lot of people are just swooning over that, but I was like ugh... really? All it does is show that both the hero and the heroine have such loose morals to actually engage in that kind of activity.
I really enjoyed this book by Andrea Laurence as I am a terrible romantic at heart and I love 'Happy Ever Afters' and this lady always produces them for us. This is book is about Liam Crowe, an alpha male who has just bought into the ANS network after the old owner was arrested for phone hacking and one of his employee's Francesca Orr, a beautiful Italian/Irish woman. They clash at their first business encounter when he tries to stop one of her charity events that she is organising, due to the company being financially short because of the scandal that has previously happened, she becomes fiery then calls him some rude names in Italian and then their battle/sparring begins.
After leaving the meeting Francesca just wants to return to her hotel room to regroup, when she enters the elevator she sees Liam heading her way and tries to shut the doors on him. However Liam puts out his arm to stop this and they end up in the elevator going down to the lobby when there is a power outage. This is when the chemistry between them starts to sizzle. Throw in an elderly aunt and an ultimatum to be married within a year or she will sell her shares in Liams company to his rival and he will lose his majority. Deception, lies, truths and love are shared in this beautiful love story.
I recommend this as a 'Must Read' for all you feel good romantics out there.
Author Biography
Andrea Laurence has been a lover of reading and writing stories since she learned to read at a young age. She always dreamed of seeing her work in print and is thrilled to finally be able to share her special blend of sensuality and dry, sarcastic humor with the world. A dedicated West Coast girl transplanted into the Deep South, she's working on her own "happily ever after" with her boyfriend and their collection of animals including a Siberian Husky that sheds like nobody's business.
Francesca works for ANS (some sort of network in D.C.) and has a new boss, Liam Crowe. He's hot and he wants to cut her budget for community relations, so she's not happy. But then she finds herself making out with him on an elevator. Liam is a commitment-phobic kind of guy and he's pretty freaked out when his Aunt tells him that if he wants to keep his company, he better get married within a year. So he thinks of the lovely woman who made out with him in the elevator and proposes.
This one was pretty average. The set up was borderline ridiculous. It's one thing to pull off the fake engagement when there isn't tons of family to lie to, but these two didn't seem to think of that much until after it was done. Liam, in his nonchalance about a fake marriage and keeping it business only, kind of got on my nerves, but he really was a sweetheart about her not being to pressured. Except for the whole physical thing...I really hated that he kept thinking about how he might get the extra physical benefit of having a fake-fiancee. Francesca, for all that she was a strong, capable character, was something of a doormat. Instead of standing up for herself and saying that his casual treatment of the situation hurt her, she just took it, telling herself that she needed as much time as she could get with him. I didn't really feel the angst in this story and the ending lacked an emotional punch. Nevertheless, it was decent, but not very exciting.
Also just to note - this appears to be part of a series. There is quite a bit of mention of characters and events from previous stories and there were times that I felt a bit lost with what they were doing or talking about. So this might not be a book you want to read as a stand-alone.

In A Very Exclusive Engagement by Andrea Laurence, Liam Crowe has bought the network after the previous owner was arrested for being involved in a phone hacking scandal. But Francesca Orr is giving problems because she is standing up for her projects and she will not back down. Only after being trapped in an elevator with her, things get very heated, for now she has gotten his attention and it will not go away that easily. So when Liam gets threatened by his aunt, by selling her shares of the network, if he doesn’t settle down, he knows he needs help and the person that comes to mind is Francesca is his best option.
Liam believes that he can fake himself through an engagement and get his aunt off his back. But no matter what he does, he will have a hard time remembering that this is a fake relationship. Only soon he ends up marrying her and he is still fighting his feeling for her, which will make their relationship very complicated. Especially since Francesca descends from an Italian mother and an Irish father, making her very passionate and with a strong personality.
But the toughest thing will be for Liam to accept his feelings before he looses Francesca, even if she herself was a little at fault with her superstitions which led her to almost giving in to loosing him without a fight.
If you like a fun, entertaining and delightful read full of chemistry and meddlesome family members, you will like A Very Exclusive Engagement by Andrea Laurence.
Of course this is just my fault. Like there are some people who love corn chowder, but I'm not one of them... I'm sure this book is AWESOME corn chowder.
I stopped at the 30 page mark, even though the Hero and Heroine being trapped in an elevator and *almost* having sex because, it's humid and dark and they're horny - that was some excellent crazysauce writing - but still... I just can't with the CEO heroes any more.
In fact - no more super wealthy contemporary heroes. If they are, they need to be OVER 45-yrs-old. You can't tell me that your hero went to Georgetown U. and then graduated and has a townhouse in Georgetown. Maybe in 1987, but not in the past two decades he didn't. And definitely not if he "built himself up," like you say he did.
Maybe rich guys only work for me if it's in a Regency. *shrug* Again, not my cup of tea, but other reader might still enjoy this one.
Oh gosh, this book was way too cute! I loved everything about it - Franscesca with her habit of swearing in Italian when she's angry and all her superstitions and Liam who is fairly private with his life. The pair of them together work so well, and I loved watching the two of them figure out they were actually perfect for one another, despite the circumstances that originally pushed them together.
Everything about A Very Exclusive Engagement was just so right. I started reading, and I never wated to put any of it down for a moment!
I was all about the secondary characters in this book - I totally want to check out the prior books in the series to see how those characters and their relationships came to be, as there seem to be some true winners in there.
Andrea Laurence always writes such great stories, and this was no exception to the rule. I cannot wait to crack open another Andrea Laurece read!

The book is part of the Daughters of Power: The Capital series, and it spends too many pages setting up the future books rather than spending time to develop this particular book's story line.
In this fifth book in the Daughters of Power: The Capital series, Andrea Laurence takes us on a whirlwind journey with a high-powered media mogul and one of the VP's he inherits when he buys a company.
Liam Crowe is determined to turn around the scandal-plagued news network he just bought and make it successful and reputable again. Butting heads with one of his fiery tempered employees might not be the best way to accomplish that!
Francesca Orr throws insults at her new boss under her breath in a foreign language one minute and then is kissing him while stuck in an elevator together the next! Will she agree to a fake ... or maybe real ... engagement with him if it means helping the network succeed?
A Very Exclusive Engagement is the 5th book in the series Daughters of Power: The Capital, and even though this book can stand alone it is good to have some background information on the secondary characters.
A Very Exclusive Engagement has sizzle from the start and just kept on sizzling. Liam Crowe's hot encounter with Francesca Orr when they were stuck in the elevator kept him wanting more. Liam's Aunt Beatrice wanted to see him married within the year and Francesca was just the person for him to coerce into tricking his Aunt the Queen Bee into thinking he is in love and engaged to be married.
Trying to save the news network brings Liam Crowe to make budget cuts that Francesca Orr doesn't want him to do. Tempers flare!!! If he does then her charity function will be hurt. Liam knows he needs help to save the scandal plagued network. He tries to get his aunt to sell him her shares. Instead she comes up with a proposition for him to earn them, but is the price too high? Again strong characters and an intriguing storyline makes this a must read Andrea Laurence book.
What happens in the elevator stays in the elevator; or does it? Another great book by Andrea Laurence. A fake engagement turns into an engagement of the heart. As with all of Andrea's books, her characters draw you into their lives and you want the book to keep on going. Don't miss out on this one.
Miniseries: Daughters of Power: The Capital Category: Passion "Laurence takes a standard romance plot and wraps it in the ongoing saga of a troubled television network, for a fast, fun and sexy read." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 1/2 stars
Rating 3.25 stars Kind of an okay book, hero convinces the heroine to act fake engaged with him, she agrees. Then they get married for a year as well. The book didn't capture me much.
