Massachusetts, the birthplace of America, is home to some of the most fascinating haunts in the world. Colonial ghosts still watch over their ancient inns in Concord and Charlemont. A railroad tunnel under the Mohawk Trail is doomed by the spirits of those who perished while digging it. The unearthly shrieks of a banshee in Marblehead chills the very marrow of those who must endure its curse. And phantom trawlers ply the waters near Gloucester. You will also experience tales of reincarnated souls, haunted lighthouses, mythical creatures, and remains of ancient civilizations. Investigations into haunted mansions and taverns reveal that the people of the past still reside with those of the present. Glowing gravestones, witches, ghost towns and haunted quarries are among the encounters that will bring you to the edge of alarm. Forty-one towns and cities hold legends and mysteries that stretch beyond the imagination into the chilling realm of the macabre. Follow, if you dare.
I really enjoyed this book. I never knew there were so many haunted places close to were I live in Westfield Mass. There were places around Mass. that I have read about before that I knew were haunted, Lizzy Borden's in Fall River, places in Salem, and several others. Good read, and a nice read with Halloween just a few weeks away.
I bought this a few years ago and finally got around to reading through it. It's not very well-written and definitely needed copyediting before being published, and the author's flair for the melodramatic was supposed to be serious but was actually very funny. It was definitely more laugh-inducing than spine-chilling! It had some good stories and good history, and it's kind of fun to browse through, but the writing is just not very good!
Thomas is a brilliant writer, historian, and Ghost Hunter. His investigations into ghost towns, haunted locations, and their backgrounds is bar-none. From cover to cover this took me a day to read, and that's record time for me. I'm a bit slow. If you want to know about classic haunts in Massachusetts, look no further, this guy will take you there.
An interesting look at the paranormal activities of Massachusetts. It also has some history mixed too although. Kind of poorly edited and fact checked(the well known Benjamin Church was a Captain not a General in the King Phillip War. It even said Captain in related picture which was humorous.). Even a few spelling mistakes I noticed. It's an easy reading book otherwise but does seem to speculate and dramatize in an almost amateurish way. It's also a good local guide if you'd like to go exploring these places.
