Zombie Reign: Death in Detroit

My name is Scott Griffin. I go by “Griff” and used to be your typical suburban cop. I loved camping, walks on the beach, videogames and my sign is Capricorn. My sign is still Capricorn, but the rest of those were put in past tense for a reason.

Why I thought it a good idea to sit down and write all this is beyond me. I alternate between thawing out my freezing digits by blowing a warm breath of life back into them, and stretching my entire hand out from writer’s cramp.

Sure it’s cold outside, winter in Detroit always is. The chill in my bones has much more to do with the stripping away of humanity from my soul, and all that I have lost, than the harsh December winter.

Huddling in the attic of a vacant home that no longer carries a mortgage, or the family that had it built to raise their children, I reminisce about the tough times of bank failures and government bailouts. Those were the good old days!

You see, there was a time when journalists would refer to Detroit as dying. It’s making a comeback lately…the dead are literally coming back to life. People aren’t exactly dying to move here, it’s more like they die and stay.

I think that I just want to write a survival journal. Not the type where the next generation is preached to about never making the mistakes in the past, but how to simply live and survive today. Speaking of which, that moan and scraping on the access door needs my attention…

This e-book is a preview into the world of Griff and his survival in the world of the living dead. The Zombie Reign series will span several novels as he and his companions attempt to survive in this ever challenging world turned upside down. This is an introduction novel into Griff's world and the prequel of the many adventures to come

This was a fairly short story that was meant to give some background on what was to come as the series progresses. I have never read this author before but found this to be well enough written that I wanted to go on with the series. The characters are all introduced by the main lead who will undoubtedly be running the action as things progress. There are a few issues with word usage but nothing really bad. Some grammatical errors are annoying but tolerable for the most part. There are some continuity issues, nothing big but it stuck out for me because they had made a big deal about it in the beginning.

Scott "Griff" Griffin was a suburban cop who loved camping, walks on the beach, and video games. Griff decides to write down what has happened and what is continuing to happen, though he cannot really say why. It's winter in Detroit and staying warm is not easy but there is much more than the cold getting to him, the humanity seems to be being slowly stripped away from his soul.
This will be a sort of survival journal, not one where the next generation gets a sermon about not making mistakes but about how to truly survive and live today.

This is a preview of the world that Griss and his fellow survivors will inhabit. The books will be over several novels that will chronicle their attempt to live in a world inhabited by the dead and those who try to use it to make themselves more important. Nice start and I am interested in seeing where things go from this slow butemtional beginning.

Smart zombie book, first person narrative, good use of humor. I love the neighborhood, and the neighbors - lots of gun-toting weirdos, bow-and-arrow-carrying tweens, and zombified Great Danes.

Won't you be my neighbor?

Good read

This is not your typical zombie book. This story is full of humor. I can't wait to read the second book in the series.

What can I say about this book? Well I guess I was expecting more from it than it gave. I was hoping it wouldn't turn out to be just another zombie book but.....

So far the characters are two dimensional and underdeveloped. They really have no depth. I was not able to get a grasp of the surroundings in my imagination because of a lack of description. These two factors made the story feel rushed and lacking. However, I think his zombies were pretty good. They are not the lumbering eating machines of old and the hyper sight is straight out of a video game koodos for them.

The author uses the sub-title of Death in Detroit when it takes place in a subburb outside of Detroit. The only time he even mentions something about going through Detroit is as he is driving on the freeway. There are no city/town names mentioned either real or fictional. The name/number of the freeway he is driving on is never said.

Bottom line I feel this book was trying too hard and lacks depth. I've read other "zombie" books where I felt like I was part of what was going on but not this one. I decided to read this one because I thought it was going to be set in Detroit but in the end I found out it's not.

Because this author is new I can't find any information about him. I don't know if he is a Metro Detroit area native or not. I say that because I am and I find some things a little off.

I am currently debating if I will move on to the next book or not. The ending did not give me the desire to continue the story so we shall see.
