"Croissants." She said it with a French accent. Absolutely adorable.

"Say that again."

A bashful smile curved her lips. "Are you teasing me?"

"A little. Go on and say it."

She pressed her lips together and made a show of debating whether to grant his request. "Croissants."

This book was actually good, I'm surprised. Taking over after Marie Ferrarella's failure in book 1, The Colton Ransom, Melissa Cutler bangs this one out with great charm and cute dialogue.

THE GOOD:

1.) Both hero and heroine have good and bad traits, like real people. Both are struggling with the deaths of loved ones. Both are scarred in their own way. Kate is terrified of both the dark and Mother Nature, she lost her husband and her unborn child. Levi is still dealing with the pain of his junkie mother's death and the pain of his rich father never acknowledging his or his mother's existence.

I liked Kate's character. It was well-constructed. Kate is deferential and doesn't stand up for herself when dealing with Jethro, the heartless patriarch, or when dealing with her cold, callous, and cruel coworkers. This is because she really needs her job - she is in debt and has no car, no money, and no loving family. However, when she is alone with Levi it's a different story. During these scenes you can see how funny, smart, assertive and skilled she is. Just because she acts passive in front of her employer and coworkers doesn't mean she is intrinsically a passive person. Cutler does this well, I think.

2.) Kate is both sexually experienced and sexually assertive, in a bold step away from traditional Harlequin heroines. She's a widow and her husband died six years ago.

"Six years is a long time to go without sex."

This is what Levi says to Kate when he finds out her husband died six years ago, but it's REALLY presumptuous of him to assume she's spent the six years celibate. In fact, she hasn't - instead having one night stands about once a year because she enjoys sex. Not to mention lots of masturbation, the book assures us.

I really like this. Harlequin's more traditional lines usually ignore modern sentiments, and finding a heroine in the romantic suspense line who a.) doesn't become celibate after losing her husband, b.) takes her sexuality into her own hands and takes initiative in finding sexual partners, and c.) is able to hold her own and even be a bit sexually aggressive with the hero is surprising and refreshing.

She's not a femme fatale, or anything, but she certainly holds her own and shows more sexual agency than many Harlequin heroines.

3.) Cute teasing and dialogue. Kate and Levi are really cute together. You can see their chemistry and sparks. This isn't a flat book where the author tries to convince you that these two have an interest in each other and you just don't buy it. These two flirt, tease, and talk a lot. It really seems as if they genuinely like each other.

4.) Good sexual chemistry, sexual writing and Cutler is actually able to make her readers feel as if there is sexual tension between the leads. Not easy to do.

5.) Cutler is also good at getting emotional responses from her readers. I really cared about the characters and I was upset and worried about them. I would get sad and angry and happy along with them.

THE BAD

1.) This is a COMPLETE soap opera. Over the top, overdramatic and full of soap opera shenanigans. Crazy ones, like kidnapped babies missing for decades, servants involved in murderous plots against their rich employers, other crazy stuff that you could never believe in a million years. If you don't like completely ridiculous drama, this isn't for you.

2.) Being a doctor doesn't make you a better lover. Also, I personally don't find doctors sexy. And our hero, Levi, is a doctor.

3.) The bad guy is NOT caught or revealed in the end, leaving readers with lots of unresolved issues. It's not a cliffhanger - the ROMANCE is wrapped up with a bow - but as far as the mystery goes, nothing is solved and you have to read the following books to get any closure.

HOW'S THE SEX, CARMEN?

It's a mixed bag. Some things Cutler gets right.

Both Levi and Kate are sexual people, and you can see the sparks between them from the get-go. They engage in sexual banter with each other. When Levi touches Kate, she responds. Cutler does us a service by making Kate have a healthy interest in cock and a blatant interest in men. She's not shy, retiring, or skittish in any way. She meets Levi head-on, even taking the lead sometimes.

"Tonight, I'm going to teach you a lesson about croissants and control. Consider it an audition for those skilled hands you were bragging about."

That's Kate, challenging Levi on his boast about his deft hands. Usually it's the hero issuing challenges and talking about teaching the heroine lessons in control. This time, the tables have turned.

When they finally go to bed together (only one sex scene per book! Remember!) it's a mixed bag. Good things include

1.) him kissing her on the neck and biting her on the neck. This is highly erotic, it should always be featured in romance novels.

2.) He plays with her clitoris while fucking her. So many books act like women are going to just magically come from vaginal stimulation alone, and that's actually not very common. It annoys me when heroes don't know enough to make sure to stimulate a woman's clitoris while penetrating them vaginally. Not the case here, he is really good at rolling her clit between his fingers while making love to her.

3.) Also, he cutely teases her while fucking her, in a cute way that I liked. It's so fun when a man is fucking you and playing with your clit and you are begging him to make you cum and he is enjoying listening to you beg and deliberately fucking you slowly just to prove that he can and that he's a stud, or something. Of course, it's not cute if it doesn't end in an orgasm, but of course Levi finishes the job. He just has fun teasing her a bit, and it's so sexy when men have enough control to do this. He's trying to prove to her that he's good in bed, and I'd say he succeeded on this front.

It's very adorable and lighthearted, not mean. Not BDSMy, either, just a bit of teasing.

4.) She's sexually on his level and not intimidated by him. She doesn't need to be coddled, coaxed or convinced of anything.

5.) They use a condom! Yay!

But the sex wasn't perfect.

There were bad things, which included

1.)Food play. I'm sorry, I know this is a thing... it even is an APPEALING thing, but unfortunately I can't read about people engaging in food play without worrying about yeast infections. He uses peaches on her vulva before going down on her, and I'm like SUGARS! YEAST INFECTION! I understand romance-novel-world probably doesn't even consider this, but I can't read about stuff like this without cringing and worrying.

2.) He goes down on her but doesn't bring her to orgasm with his mouth. This is just a pet peeve of mine, probably. He brings her to the edge with his mouth and then puts his penis in. Just no. That annoys me. I was annoyed. Perfect chance to be able to make her orgasm twice during sex and he just ignores it. I fail to understand why he wouldn't give her multiple orgasms in this scenario. It would be easy and fun to make her come on his tongue and then on his penis, but he just doesn't do this for some reason. She was frustrated and so was I. Annoying.

Tl;dr - After the first entry in this series being a disappointment, I can understand people being discouraged. However, the second book far outshines the first book. Surprisingly flirty, lively, and emotional for a Romantic Suspense novel, those from Harlequin's RS line are usually a disappointment for me.

Kudos to Cutler for not only bringing the heat, but for engaging my emotions and making me feel for the characters. Not perfect, but pretty satisfying.

Very good book, second in the series. Levi was asked by his half-sisters to come to the ranch and try to get their father to accept medical treatment. He is reluctant because Jethro never claimed him as his son and is still resentful about it. He is immediately attracted to Kate who is the pastry chef for the ranch. Kate is glad to be employed at the ranch because she has a lot of debt to repay. Many of the people she works with/for are pretty obnoxious. Kate is drawn to try to find out who killed the woman in the first book because Faye had been like a mother to her. Kate is also attracted to Levi but doesn't want to risk her job. As the days go on the attraction gets stronger but Kate is also in danger.

I really liked both Kate and Levi. Both are good people who have had bad things happen to them, but both are survivors. Kate was married and pregnant when they were involved in a car accident that killed her husband and unborn baby. She also lost her business leaving her with a lot of debt. She has closed herself off from involvement with anyone else, feeling that she can't handle the pain of another loss. One of her closest relationships on the ranch was to Faye and now she feels compelled to try to discover who the killer is. Levi's appearance on the ranch makes Kate feel things she swore she would never feel again. It doesn't take long for her to decide to go ahead and give in to the desire but to keep her emotions locked up. I really enjoyed the way that Levi ended up knocking down her walls. He had a true appreciation for the job she does, especially since he has a major sweet tooth. I loved Kate's compassion for other people. She enjoys creating desserts for Jethro even though he's a grouch because she feels sorry for him. Her depth of understanding for Levi as he deals with his father, the memories of being back in his hometown, and also memories of his mother are another demonstration of her growing love for Levi. Even discovering the connection between the two of them isn't enough to keep her down for long.

Levi is a great hero. He is kind and compassionate which shows in his work as a doctor. But he is also strong and sexy. He wants nothing to do with the father who has denied him all these years, but he can't say no to his half sisters when they ask for his help. He arrives at the ranch and meets Kate right away. His attraction to her is immediate, but he also realizes that there is more to it than just desire. He also takes on his father right away and doesn't back down from Jethro's contrariness. I really loved the way that Levi is constantly in Jethro's face about the way he treats other people. Levi's compassion is also obvious in the way that despite Jethro's attitude Levi still wants to do his best for Jethro's health. I also loved his protectiveness toward Kate. Besides standing up for her against Jethro, he is also worried about her involvement in trying to find Faye's killer, especially after Kate is attacked. Add in the wildfire that is threatening the ranch and Levi realizes that he wants Kate in his life forever.

The mystery is proceeding, not too fast since it has to last through six books. There is another murder, Kate is threatened and attacked, and the mystery of the kidnapped Colton baby is ongoing.

My first ever book by the talented Melissa Cutler was Tempted into Danger, which I very highly recommend. I knew then I was going to be a fan of her writing style. I was very excited to read Colton by Blood.

Kate is the Pastry chef at Dead River Ranch. She has struggled to get out of debt after losing her husband and unborn child in a tragic accident six years ago. She also wants to figure out who could have murdered her best friend Faye Frick, which puts her in the path of a kidnapper and murdered.

Dr. Levi Colton has come to Dead River Ranch to help the man who fathered him but never acknowledged him as his son. Jethro Colton has Leukemia and without a bone marrow transplant he will not last long. What I really liked about Levi’s character was even though he grew up poor and without a father’s love. He had a forgiving heart and made a life for himself.

Melissa has a great talent for writing characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. Dr. Levi Colton and Kate McCord are perfect examples. They are instantly attracted to each other. Both Levi and Kate have had suffered the loss of loved ones in their lives and are working to overcome their past. I loved the flirty way they were with each other. And both had such kind and forgiving hearts. And I am not sure I will ever be able to look at a peach again and not think of a certain scene in the kitchen.

For such a short novel it packs a serious punch. You have quite a few issues, yet I really didn’t feel like I missed out. It is about overcoming the loss of those you loved. Finding forgiveness, and opening your heart to the possibility of a new love.

REVIEW:

I loved Colton by Blood! It is the second book in the Colton series written by different Harlequin authors. I haven't read the other books in the series, but requested this one because I read Tempted Into Danger by Melissa Cutler and loved it. She is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine after reading my second book written by her. She definitely knows how to write sexy heroes. I loved the hot Dr. Levi Colton. Both Levi and Kate have been through a lot and are portrayed in a way that really makes the reader feel for them. Their story is fast paced, emotional and full of passion. I will be going back to read the first book in the Colton series by another author and look forward to reading what happens next in the series. I am also putting Melissa Cutler on my must buy list. She writes great romantic suspense books.

Who doesn’t like a hot doctor?? Levi Colton has so many qualities that I love in a man. Despite his past, Levi is very loving, caring, and compassionate. I think that his character was just waiting for someone like Kate. Kate has been through a variety of challenges in her past. Despite the adversity, Kate is also a loving and caring individual. She is perfect for Levi.

Melissa Cutler has captured the emotion from both Levi and Kate’s love story perfectly. She has woven mystery and the seduction of food into this story in an intriguing way. Cooking has never been so sexy! She has also thrown in the angst and turmoil of a strained relationship between Levi and Jethro Colton, his father. Jethro’s character is angry and arrogant and he is so easy to dislike at the beginning of the story. He grew on me after a while. I thought his character was a great addition to the story.

The combination of romance, mystery, and family turmoil made this a fabulous read for me. I am a Melissa cutler fan and will continue to be as long as she turns out wonderfully written books like this one. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good emotional read.

This story was really hard for me to get into. I gave it my best shot, but gave up after chapter 5. I’m sure it’s a good book for some of you, but as we all know not every book will interest everyone.

I'm going to come clean right off the bat and admit this is my first "Cowboy" romance book I've read. I have family who are about as country as they come, but my family don't own a ranch and ride horses. They all drive trucks, say "ya'll" and have dogs for pets, but they have all had their challenges with living in the south (Texas) and issues with work like the rest of us. I am glad I could review Colton by Blood as the Colton family is a refreshing take on the typical "country/cowboy" views of them.

Levi Colton was doing everything he could to avoid the family that shunned him and his mother. Even now, after several years have passed since his mom died he loathes the man who let his mother wither away in bitter hurt. When his half-sisters beg and plead for him to come help care for their dying father, Jethro, he really wanted nothing to do with Jethro, but his Doctor side has him on the road from Levine to the country-side sprawling estate the Colton's live in along with the family help.

Poor Kate McCord is afraid of the dark and with the crazy Texas winds knocking out power it leaves her stuck in place only to drop the tray with the treat she was heading to give Jethro Colton. What she doesn't realize is what happens when you are late giving a person with a sweet-tooth the size of Texas their evening treat. And boy does she get reamed out by Jethro when she arrives late with his evening sweet... What she doesn't realize is that Levi is standing right outside the door...listening and waiting for the perfect moment to enter Jethro's living quarters.

Enter Levi and we almost can feel the sparks between him and Kate. But what snags him is the sweet left for Jethro, and boy is it moan-worthy good! As the plot builds and things start happening at the ranch, we see both Kate and Levi struggling with their feelings for each other. Levi thinks that being a Colton is a curse and that he has been trying to prove he is nothing like the man Jethro is notorious for being - cold and uncaring. What he finds out is that there is pride and bone deep roots to all Colton's which are GOOD traits, which he does have.

Kate has a history which any woman would not wish upon their worse enemy. Trying to put back together the semblances of her life and go back to doing what she loved has proven difficult. we get to learn about what drives her and about the ghosts of her past. She believes love is an ill-fated thing for her and to love again would only cause more hurt, and pain, both of which she knows would only cause her to become more depressed and shutdown from the outside world. Her one friend and confidante at the Ranch was murdered and Kate has taken it upon herself to help find the killer, but what she doesn't realize is this puts her in danger. At the same time trouble is still brewing on the ranch as it seems one of the servers has a hidden agenda to get her way into good graces with the Colton's and get a cut of their country fortune. Her greed unfortunately get her killed, leaving all wondering who the killer is??

Levi has an instinct when it comes to Kate and when the raging wildfire gets to the borders of the Colton's estate everyone get to work saving and moving the cattle and horses to safety. When Kate isn't seem or heard from in several hours Levi can't help shake the feeling something is wrong. He soon comes to find out that someone on the ranch is out to hurt her, and his protective side goes into overdrive. They soon learn that their paths are more intertwined then they EVER knew! This drives a large wedge into their growing relationship and they are both left reeling from the hurt of ghosts of the past. This drives Kate away right into the killers path again! The best part is the ending and how things played out...so NO spoilers here. Believe me it's an ending that will resolve a lot of things for both Levi and Kate.

The one thing about a series of books that I don't answer all the mystery in one books and you have to wait for the next book to give you more answers. I was not ready for the story to end I wanted more. I like Levi, he is strong, caring and willing to forgive a lifetime of bad treatment.

This book should have a warning, full of yummy deserts make you just gain weight by reading about Kate the pastry chef at the Dead river ranch. She puts up with a lot so she can pay her debts before she can move onto a better job. She works early in the morning till late. She has had a lot of trials in her life. Kate is also looking into the death of her friend who tried to stop a kidnapper. People find out she is looking for answers and warn her to stop, let the police look into it.

Dr. Levi Colton was asked by his half sisters to come to Dead River Ranch that their father was dying and refused any treatments. His father is rich and never acknowledged him but he did pay child support. Everyone else is scared of him. He refused them and then decided to just drive to Wyoming to the ranch to prove he is not like his father.

lots of drama, danger but lots of witty dialogue early morning while they are the only two awake at the big ranch while Kate is baking bread or another desert. One love scene that I skimmed over. Also a wildfire is coming close to the ranch.

This is the second book of Melissa's that I have read and enjoyed. I look forward to reading more of her books.

Colton Blood is part two of a six book series by Harlequin called Coltons in Wyoming. I have to say that usually, I do not read out of order. Being that Ms. Cutler wrote this installment, I just had to take the plunge. I’m glad I did because it was a great read. Colton Blood has a good murder mystery, plenty romantic and sexy with a dash of foodie.

Levi is not Ms. Cutler’s typical hero. Gone is the rich and dangerous hero, and here comes the “good doctor”. He is kind, honorable and sweet but still every bit a sexy hero. Don’t let the good boy persona fool you though, he is also as protective , and he has a dark side to him. After so many years of being away from his home town, Levi comes back to help with his estranged biological father with his illness. Why would he even give the man who wouldn’t claim him as his own? Well, like I said, he’s a good guy. There, he meets Kate who is the pastry chef in the Colton house hold. She had lost loved ones recently , and she is trying to pay off some major debts. I think she’s cute and sweet. I love that Kate paid attention to detail especially with her pastries. But what I love most about her character, and I guess this goes for Levi as well, is that they are survivors. Despite the difficulties life has given them, they had stayed strong. They didn’t dab on stupid decisions or actions they would regret later, like I said…strong. I love that they were hot for each other and just went with it. No angst or third party, just two consenting adults who wants to try things out. Ms. Cutler did a great job pairing them up

The conflict of this story is the murder mystery and family drama. There have been murders, threats and a kidnapped baby that was never found. It was fun trying to decipher the scenes and characters to guess whom the perpetrator is. This book is a stand alone, and you do get a happy ending for this couple however, there is an unsolved mystery. I’m assuming readers will find out by the last installment of the series which I will most likely read so I can find out “whodunit”.

My Review:

This is an interesting premise for a series. There are six authors writing six different books that follow the Colton family. There is an over-arcing romantic suspense line and that won't ultimately be solved until the final book.

The Colton family is an extremely wealthy family in Wyoming. There are three daughters, a missing son, and then Levi is an illegitimate son who's never ever been acknowledged by his father. But Levi is a doctor so his half-sisters ask him to come help take care of their stubborn father who is dying from leukemia and refusing any sort of treatment at all.

Kate is the pastry chef for the ranch. Six years ago her world fell apart when her husband and unborn child died in a car accident. Subsequently, she lost her bakery to bankruptcy and is just now getting back on top of her life again, six years later. A month before the book began, Kate's one friend on the ranch was murdered. Kate is determined that she can find the murderer.

I really liked Kate and Levi and the story with Levi's father. All the back stories there created amazingly deep, emotional characters that I loved. I also really loved the cooking aspect of the story although it really made me crave desserts all the way through reading it...LOL!

What I didn't like was the one thing I'm sure Melissa Cutler had no control over, because I'm sure it was one of the things set by the overall creator of the series. I hated how large the servant/staff was for the ranch. It was so overwhelming with maids and cooks and I don't even know what all they all did...all bowing down to cater to the Colton family... that it gave the book a really historical feel to reading it. I hate reading historicals and that one little thing almost ruined this book for me. I just couldn't get past the feeling that this was a historical although everything else about it was very modern. I know...it makes no sense, but it's just a fact of my reading experience with this book. I wish the household basics had been set up differently, but I'm sure that will go into play in the overall suspense line since all indicators point to someone from the staff being the bad guy (don't worry, that wasn't a spoiler...that's stated from the very beginning of the book)...

But regardless of that, the book read well and was pretty entertaining. I'm dying to know what happened to Cole....

Colton By Blood brings together the characters of Kate McCord and Levi Colton. Kate is a hardworking pastry chef working for the rich Colton's of Dead River Ranch. Levi is the unclaimed illegitimate son of Jethro Colton, he's also a doctor. Both Kate and Levi are dealing with tragedies of the past and both have come to the Ranch to heal and move on in one way or another.

I love Kate's silent tho resilient strength. I love how passionate she is about her baking. I can identify with her somewhat as I have used baking as a stress reliever myself, so I can see how it soothes her. Kate truly has a heart of gold, even though she's suffered horribly, she wants happiness for others and justice for those who deserve it.

Levi is one tough nut to crack, he's gone his entire life knowing who his family is, yet never being a part of said family. And since his mother's death, he's alone. But he still finds the nerve to come to his father's home to assist as he's dying. It takes a real will of steel to put up with Jethro Colton, but Levi doesn't let him steam roll over him from the get go.

As Levi helps his father, and his sisters in turn, he gets to know more about himself and his family. He also gets to know Kate and in doing so falls for her hard and fast. It takes a little convincing on Kate's part however, as she is determined to keep her job by not giving in at first. It was fun to watch Levi break down Kate's walls while we got to see some of his crumble as well. Then we get a little shock as we find out just how closely intertwined Kate and Levi are and watch as love overcomes the surprising revelation.

Colton by Blood is a first and foremost a love story. It is also, a continuation of a set of suspense stories. While this is the second book of the series, it is the first I have read and I feel it can totally be read as a stand alone. This book builds more onto the mystery of the series while also focusing on the love story of Kate and Levi. So while Kate and Levi's story does end with this book, you do not solve the "mysteries" of the entire series. (which means I'll have to read the rest, of course) Cutler does an amazing job of keeping up the suspense while penning a believable love story that is both heartbreaking and moving.

Colton by Blood is the second book in The Coltons of Wyoming six book continuity in the Harlequin Romantic Suspense line. A quick internet search told me that there have been many books written about the Colton family, none of which I have read except for the first book in this continuity. This lack of knowledge about the Colton family did not hinder, in any way, my enjoyment of Colton by Blood.

Dr. Levi Colton, who is the illegitimate son of clan patriarch Jethro Colton, has been asked by his half-sister to come to the Dead River Ranch to convince the very unlikable Jethro Colton to get treatment for his cancer. It is at the ranch, that Levi meets “the pastry girl,” Kate McCord . . .

The Setting: This is Downton Abbey/Upstairs, Downstairs Wyoming style. Honestly, I never really thought about how large ranches in the western Unites States might be run. Ms. Cutler gives us a very good peek at the hierarchy at the ranch, which is surprisingly like the days of yore in England!

The Characters: Jethro Colton came off as a tyrant, and someone I immediately disliked, but as the book progressed, we see many facets of this man who is the way he is because of the life he has lead. Levi Colton and Kate McCord were both likable characters whose attraction to each other seemed genuine. They both have lots of emotional baggage from their pasts that they must work through before they find their HEA, but those kinds of things make for the most engaging heroes and heroines.

Favorite Scene: the croissant making lesson!! That’s all I’ll say! ;-)

There are some loose ends in the book, but being that Colton by Blood is part of a continuity, that is to be expected, and does not take away from the enjoyment of this book. It can definitely be read as a stand alone. Romantic suspense fans will appreciate the pace of the book, with the suspense and romantic tension being just at the right levels.

In my opinion, this is another winner for Melissa Cutler!!! I am looking forward to many more books by this new and very talented romance writer.

(I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the author in exchange for my honest review, but I also bought a copy!!)

Another fantastic book from Melissa Cutler!!!

Levi has lived his entire life with being Jethro Colton’s bastard son. Despite being raised by a drug addicted mother and his father not claiming him or ever contributing financially, he has worked hard to become a doctor and is proud of accomplishing it entirely on his own. He doesn’t want anything from the man who has never wanted him. One of his half sisters shows up begging for him to help his father who is dying from leukemia and who is refusing all medical treatment. He travels back to the one place he’s never wanted to go so that he can find some closure; this may be his only chance to get the answers he wants and to finally be done with Jethro Colton.

Upon arriving at the ranch, Levi immediately goes to his father’s room and takes him on right away; he doesn’t back down from Jethro’s contrariness and is determined to uphold his oath as a doctor. Kate, the Colton’s pastry chef, is serving Jethro his dessert when Levi goes to his father’s room. He is immediately smitten with Kate.

Kate has lost her bakery business, leaving her with a ton of debt. Her husband and unborn child were killed in a horrible car accident and until now she has closed herself off from becoming involved with anyone because she doesn’t think she can deal with the pain of losing anyone close to her again.
Faye, who was like a mother to her, was the one person at the ranch that she let get close to her. She was murdered at the ranch in a botched baby kidnapping. The murder has gone unsolved. Kate won’t give up trying to discover who killed her even though her life may be in danger; there is someone close who will do whatever it takes for secrets to be kept hidden and the murder to remain unsolved. It doesn’t take long for Kate to give in to her desire for Levi but she still tries to keep her emotions locked away.

As bond begins to grow between the family members, a wild fire is moving closer, a kidnapper is still at large and tragic events from their past are overwhelming for both Levi and Kate.

The mixture of family turmoil, mystery and romance made this book a fantastic read for me. I can’t wait to for Melissa Cutler’s next book.

4.5 Stars

In Colton by Blood by Melissa Cutler, Dr. Levi Colton has lived with being branded a bastard and not being wanted or recognized by his own father. He worked hard to be where he is today and he wants nothing to do with the Colton’s especially Jethro Colton, but his half sister has shown up begging for his help now that his father is dying.

Kate McCord is a pastry chef at the Dead River Ranch, the Colton’s ranch. After the death of her husband and her baby she knows what it’s like to loose those you love and having them taken away unexpectedly. Now all she wants is to survive and not think about the past, and definitely not feel again. But the recent murder has her wanting to find the killer, the person responsible for taking another person she grew to care about away from her.

Levi want to arrive at Dead River Ranch and leave as fast as possible, but when he arrives things will give him another view into things than what he always thought. His sisters are not as he believed to be, and while his father is still a rude and annoying, he still needs help that as a doctor he vowed to give.

What Levi didn’t expect most of all, was the distraction of the pastry chef and how much he wants to get to know her. But she will not make things easy for him, and if he wants even a friendship from her he will have to work hard to get it, and that he will by getting up early each morning when she is alone in the kitchen preparing to make fresh bread.

As the relationship between Levi and Kate develops, so will the intrigue and mysteries, for there is someone close that wants the truth of the murder and behind the kidnapping to be kept hidden. And the ambition and greed of others may put them in the path of the killer and put more people in danger, especially Kate who will not let the killer get away as easily.

Kate and Levi are very likable characters that will steal your heart with their stories. But they will make you fear for their lives as they try to find the truth behind the kidnapping, the murder and discover some deep dark secrets.

For a very intriguing and entertaining read, don’t miss Colton by Blood by Melissa Cutler.

Colton by Blood – Mystery and Desserts

Kate McCord a pastry chef on the Dead River Ranch falls for the handsome Dr. Levi Colton. They share their deepest darkest secrets and they also share their love of dessert. The way Melissa Cutler describes desserts is luscious but also down right sinful with words like: “…taste of vanilla, sugar and egg on his tongue, his eyes rolled up and he moaned.” Or “Sweet and lemony and soft…better than crème brulee, and more wicked than peaches.” Yummy in more ways than one!

Kate McCord has lost everything… family, home, and business. However, Kate doesn’t let that get her down, she is determined, independent, and takes risks that put her very life in danger. Melissa Cutler describes Kate in a way that is believable and touching. The book made me cry, want to give Kate a hug, and cheer her on all at the same time.

Dr. Levi Colton has come home to take care of his dying biological uncaring father Jethro. Dr. Levi Colton is driven to make a change in his life because of his low economical background. When asked to come home to take care of Jethro, it is hard emotionally for Levi to return. The sexy Dr. Levi Colton is the yummy and falls hard for Kate and her pastry. It is no wonder everyone is in love with the hansome Doctor.

The annoying and rude at times Jethro is the head of the house and has everyone scared and running around doing his bidding. However, to be honest the cantankerous Jethro is my favorite character, he reminds me of my 95 year old Uncle. Who doesn’t love grouchy old men!

The mystery of the unknown killer leaves you guessing and fearful for all the characters in the book. It made me nervous as Kate and Levi try to solve all the deep dark secrets of the past. I couldn’t put the book down as they discover more and more about the past!

Sometimes bad things happen to good people....

Dr. Levi Colton has lived his life having to deal with a father who would never acknowledge him as his son. Raised by a drug addicted mother he had to struggle, but having lived a hard life made him determined to help others. That's why he became a doctor. He thought he was over his father's betrayal until one of his half-sisters comes to him asking for his help. Their father is dying and she is hoping he will come back to the ranch to take care of him. Levi figures this may be his only chance at getting the answers he's always wanted and be done with the Colton name.

Kate McCord has had her share of grief, losing a husband and baby. Then on top of that losing her bakery shop and going into debt. She's working for the Colton's now trying to start a new future. When Levi shows up feelings she thought were long gone start to reappear.

Levi and Kate have to come to terms with their past in order to build a future.

Great story about family whether you want to acknowledge them or forget them to go on with your life. The ups, downs and drama of seeing where you come from and who you have become.

On Dead River Ranch there is plenty of excitement with wildfires threatening, a killer on the loose and family who have to finally learn what's most important.

Colton by Blood is book two by Melissa Cutler in the Colton series written by various Harlequin authors. I picked this up because I’ve read and enjoyed previous titles from Ms. Cutler. I’ll admit, because I didn’t read book one in this series, I was a little loss. But if you’re a determined reader like me, I just powered on and was able to pick up the plot of the previous book with only some confusion. In this story, pastry chef Kate has found an escape at the Colton ranch in Dead River Ranch. She has a past she’s trying to overcome and really just wants to keep her head down and bake. Dr. Levi Colton is the unrecognized bastard son who has come back to the ranch to care for his dying father, Jethro. Neither of them expected to find much on the ranch, but the almost instant connection they feel is something they can’t ignore. But with a wild fire moving closer, a kidnapper still at large and a tragic event from the past almost overwhelming them both, will their love even stand a chance? Good read, I enjoyed the mystery aspect. The love happened a little quick for me but that’s what needs to happen in a story of this length. Intrigued for the rest of the series to see what happens next!

This book was a Delightfully Delicious Read! This was Book 2 in a new series about the Colton's of Wyoming in Harlequin's Romantic Suspense line. I am fast becoming a fan of the RS, something I never thought would happen. CBB centers around Levi, the illegitimate son of the Patriarch of the Colton clan, he is now a doctor and is summoned by his half-sister to help his dying father. There is also a mystery surrounding a murder and botched kidnapping, which he tries to help solve indirectly because of the beautiful pastry chef,Kate and her need to bring justice for her friend's murder. Levi and Kate each have a secret that is connected and could ruin their budding relationship. Even though parts of the book were predictable, Cutler does a nice job of still throwing a few surprises in. Cutler descriptions of all the yummy desserts used in the book had me craving whatever they were having. I swear I gained 5 pounds reading this book, but is was so worth it! Cutler is fast becoming an auto-buy author!

Melissa Cutler writes a wonderfully powerful love story in this book, Colton by Blood.

Levi and Kate are great characters with tons of emotional baggage but their friendship is real and honest and what I like most about them.

The Colton home is very intriguing and everyone who lives there seems to have their own compelling story.

Oh, and there's some kidnappings, accidents, assaults and there's a murderer waiting in the wings.

Great job on this book, Melissa Cutler! I enjoyed it very much.

This is absolutely a stand-alone story but my only regret is not reading book 1 in this 6 book series first. Now, I must go back and find out more about Trevor!

Levi and Kate both have experienced very deep pain in their lives. They find each other at Dead River Ranch, but both have to give themselves permission to feel and love again. This was the first book I read in this series. I chose it because I love Melissa Cutler's writing style. I like that Ms. Cutler allows her alpha males to have emotions. Not only do they protect those they love, but they aren't afraid to cry or feel. I enjoyed this book...however...a felt things moved too fast near the ending. The plot was building and building, then suddenly it was over. I almost felt like the ending was rushed and I was left wanting a little more. It was still worth the time to read and I do recommend it.

I think that Melissa Cutler has developed a "perfect" recipe for romantic suspense!
Kate McCord is the creative pastry chef at Dead River Ranch when Dr. Levi Colton arrives to treat the ailing father who has never claimed him. Levi has so many conflicting emotions, but he knows that he's attracted to Kate and her mouth-watering desserts. Then he also discovers that she's involved in the troubles surrounding the ranch and he's more involved than he ever thought he could be.
This is the second story in the Coltons of Wyoming series, but it's not necessary to read the prior story.

This was a great romantic suspense. Without being overly sex driven, a real romance bloomed. Seeing their relationship building and turning into something real, it's a feel good story. Levi and Jethro, the father that never wanted him, turned the story into something deeper than a normal romance. The added mystery of a killer on the loose had you turning page after page. This was a great story, and I really think everyone will enjoy it.

Colton by Blood by Melissa Cutler is the second book in The Coltons of Wyoming series. Dr. Levi Colton is called to Dead River Ranch to care for his father, a man that never claimed him as a son. Looking for some closure, and to help his half sisters, Levi knows he is in for a challenge. When he did not expect was to find Kate McCord, a pastry chef with her own mission and sweet smile. Neither is eager to put their heart on the line, and plenty of more pressing matters are on their minds. The Colton patriarch is dying, an unsolved murder and kidnapping plot still weighs heavy on everyone's minds, and wildfires are burning. Can the pair come to terms their own demons and their attraction before they fall prey to a killer's trap?

I will start of by saying that I did not read the first book in the series, The Colton Ransom by Marie Ferrarella. However, while there were certain bits of background story that I might have not had a complete picture of, I felt that Colton by Blood stood on its own well. There was a well balanced mix of drama, fun flirting, and suspense. Kate is a woman looking to rebuild her life after losing everything she cared about. Tragedy took her family, and left fear of the dark and a bundle of debts in their place. She is trying to survive and do better every day, but never really expects love or even success in her future, just survival. Levi has been the denied bastard son for most of his life, and is making peace with his situation. The loss of his mother, his less than picture perfect childhood, and one forgotten night leave him with ghosts to do battle with. Levi's response to to become a doctor in order to help others, and to find a healthy way to connect to others. Together the pair fight their attraction, not wanting to be detracted from their goals, but cannot seem to stop the connection or flirting that seems to pop up between them. The larger family dynamics and suspense are extremely well done and had me intrigued- interested to read more of the series.

I have to admit that there was one thing that bothered me, and that just might be my issue rather than a problem with Colton by Blood. I think it was about half way through the book, I saw the start of a plot twist. It certainly made things more dramatic and intense, but I thought it a little to obvious. In fact, I commented on it out-loud and received a strange look from my husband as I told my Kindle how disappointed in that aspect of the story. I do not want to give it away, and the story as a whole was still very good, but I thought it was a little to easy of a twist to tie everything together.

I would recommend Colton by Blood to readers that have read and enjoyed the other books by Cutler, or The Colton Ransom by Marie Ferrarella. The characters and flirting were perfect, and the suspense was fairly well done as well. If you like all the mysteries introduced in a story to be tied up in the end, then you would be disappointed here. To get all the big secrets about the Colton family, I think readers will have to dive in and read the complete series. However, if this book is an indication of the quality of the entire series, the effort will be no chore.

This is a suspenseful continuation to the series about the Colton family of Wyoming. A page turner until the conclusion with the overall story arc continuing as the series progresses each month.

Kate McCord has been an assistant cook and pastry chef for the Colton’s for several years, she became a widow and grieving mother when tragedy found her and brought her to this part of Wyoming, she is waiting to start the next chapter in her life.

Levi Colton is the bastard son of Jethro, the patriarch of Dead River Ranch, while growing up he was never welcomed by his father yet despite his childhood Levi pulled himself up to make something of himself and became a doctor. Levi is contacted by his half-sisters to come and help his father as he is dying of Leukemia.

The ranch is facing several problems, a recent kidnapping with an unsolved murder, someone is trying to hurt Kate to keep her from finding out new information that could help and Mother Nature is about to ravage the area with wild fires. All the while, Kate and Levi grow closer as they find solace in being together amidst the chaos around them.

Colton by Blood is a wonderful story with enough suspense and romance to satisfy all who enjoy a thrilling book with mystery, engaging characters and family drama. I did not read the first book in this series but I had no trouble jumping right in to this story with all the troubles they are facing. When we first meet Kate I was a little worried, she seemed emotionally weak, scared of the dark and did not speak up when someone was criticizing her. Yet, then I saw a different side of her, a strong woman who has been through a terrible ordeal but ready to take on her friend’s murder investigation and I began to like her. She is a good match for Levi, also someone who had a terrible past but pulled himself up and excelled.

I really like Levi, always cool and detached about his emotions which is how he got through life yet he became the man he is today because of his childhood. He definitely has a chip on his shoulder about his father but held his ground against the powerful Colton’s. The romance between the two starts slow with glances and touches as the mutual attraction builds but that is understandable as there is a lot going on in the house with a murder to solve and trusts to gain.

There are many characters that come and go in this story as we try to figure out who is good and who is evil, a tentative bond grows between the family members yet years of anger is hard to break through easily. I like how Kate wants to confront Mother Nature and Levi wants to break the cycle of bitterness with forgiveness. The family drama is intense and the house has an evil feel to it, not sure if this feeling will continue throughout the series, I hope as secrets are revealed and mysteries are solved the house will break free of the darkness that I feel while reading.

I am hooked by this story and will definitely be reading the next installments as we find out the secrets of the Colton family.

Cutler ended up in the unenviable position of second. This is the second book in the Coltons of Wyoming six-book mini-series. The basic ground-work was already in place making her job of moving the story forward, but not moving it too far an interesting challenge. As always, Cutler is up to the job. Her book was well-crafted and brings new clues to the table for those readers playing along at home. The HEA is self-contained and comes to a logical for now conclusion. I genuinely liked Levi and Kate and nothing about their story felt forced. There is a minor mystery that is easily solved and most readers will see coming early in the book.

The overarching story does leave several loose ends. There seem to be lots of nefarious goings on at the Colton Ranch, but I think the big mystery is what happened to the Colton heir that was kidnapped when he was a baby. However, with the number of threads being woven together that could end up being a minor mystery also. So far that is part of the fun of this series: no one has spelled out specifically the overarching plot. That leaves me as a reader to discover as the characters do. There is a murder at the very end of the book that is left unsolved. While the victim is a minor character that I really didn’t like by the end, I still want to know whodunit. Based on these two books, I’m sure I will eventually learn the answer; though I would very much prefer that it happen sooner rather than later.
