National Geographic's new inspirational book combines meaningful, calming quotations and affirmations with powerful photography--the perfect source for relaxation and meditation. Each page of this elegant guide soothes as it inspires with quotations and images centered on monthly themes: a graceful pathway to a more mindful, beautiful life.
The National Geographic Society (NGS), headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States, is one of the largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations in the world. Founded in 1888, its interests include geography, archaeology, and natural science, the promotion of environmental and historical conservation, and the study of world culture and history. The National Geographic Society's logo is a yellow portrait frame—rectangular in shape—which appears on the margins surrounding the front covers of its magazines and as its television channel logo. Through National Geographic Partners (a joint venture with The Walt Disney Company), the Society operates the magazine, TV channels, a website, worldwide events, and other media operations.
This book was excellent....both photography wise (National Geographic) and thought-provoking wise. It is the 2nd book of this series by National Geographic that I've read, and I'm about to start the 3rd one, and I also found the 4th one. Whereas the former book focused on "Peace", this particular book focuses on "Calm". It is not a book that you can just breeze through...you, as the reader, end up thinking rather closely on the words on the photos too. The people that are quoted are from all walks of life, and from many different time periods. Names like Henry Miller, Oscar Wilde, Buddha, Zora Neale Hurston, Confucius, Eleanor Roosevelt, Stanley Kubrick, Cicero, Mahatma Gandhi, Rumi, Martin Luther, Washington Irving, Willa Cather, William Shakespeare, Charles M. Schulz, Coco Chanel....the list goes on and on. Coco Chanel said, "Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance." That is so true of this book, and mindfulness as well. At the end of the book there is a very important index...an index of contributor's....they are given by name, their dates of birth and death, and what they did in their lives. All important if you want to find out more about all of the people contributing to this work of art. Not only that, but it is followed by illustration credits. I absolutely love these books, and they will always be part of my permanent book collection. I definitely recommend them to you. It is such a pleasurable experience reading them.
I read this book over many months since it is a daily book of beautiful photos and brief quotes. The photos are gorgeous but most of the quotes and affirmations are commonly found and stated. I really liked the way each month had a different theme. If you like daily books combined with lovely photos, you will enjoy this book - which can be enjoyably read/viewed many times.
My husband and I read Daily Calm: 365 Days of Serenity by National Geographic Society as a daily shared reading. The quotes are relevant and calming, which is a great way to start each day during this time of chaos (2020). The photos are lovely and add to the serenity of the reading. The daily reading helps keep us grounded. Definitely a good way to soothe our spirits as we start each day.
This is a lovely little book of wonderful quotes and even more beautiful photos. What would one expect from a National Geographic publication?
It is so beautiful and each page worthy of contemplation that each page made you hungry for the next. It sat on my desk and was picked up often over a few months so was not “beholding” to the 365 boundary.
The three books I've been reading all year as "page-a-day" type books, I finished off a day early since I sat down to read today's entry and just decided I'd read tomorrow's as well. The real beauty here, as might be expected with anything by National Geographic, is the stunning array of photographs. The brief quotes each day, with a theme for each month, are varied and provided contemplation, but it was the artwork I found most soothing. It's made me realize that I used to keep art/coffee table books out on my table and just pick them up to browse sometimes and let my mind wander. I'm thinking I'll find some new books of art to enjoy in the year ahead. In the meantime, Daily Calm is a keeper.
