Incorrigible Jack Beaufort, Earl of Frensham, with a scandal at his heels, is taking an enforced sojourn in the country. He hardly expects to confront a highwayman in this quiet retreat. Or to discover, when he lays hands on the villain, a form that is undeniably female….
Should he unmask the daring Miss Lacey and hand her over to the law? Or follow his rakish instincts to take the law and that temptingly curvaceous form into his own hands?
I was born into an army family and most of my childhood was spent moving from school to school, including periods of living in Egypt and Germany. Some schools I loved and some I hated, so it wasn't too surprising that I left before completing my examinations.
I became a secretary but realised almost immediately that the role of handmaiden simply wasn't for me. Escape beckoned when I landed a job with an airline. I was determined to see as much of the world as possible and working as cabin crew I met some very interesting people and enjoyed some great experiences - riding in the foothills of the Andes, walking the shores of Lake Victoria, flying pilgrims from Kandahar to Mecca.
The arrival of marriage and children meant a more settled life in the south of England where I've lived ever since. It also gave me the opportunity to go back to ‘school’ and eventually gain a PhD. For many years I taught English at a number of universities and loved every minute of it. What could be better than spending my life reading and talking about books? Well, writing them perhaps.
Writing was an idea I enjoyed thinking about but there never seemed time to do more than dabble with the occasional short story. And I was always aware of a critical voice in my head telling me not to bother! But gradually the voice grew fainter and the idea that I might actually write a whole book began to take hold. I'd always felt an affinity with the 19th century and grew up reading Georgette Heyer, so when I finally plucked up the courage to begin writing, the novels had to be Regency romances.
I was delighted to learn just before Christmas 2009 that my first book, Reprobate Lord, Runaway Lady, had been accepted for publication. Since then I've published two further Regencies and a Victorian timeslip, Walking Through Glass. I'm getting immense pleasure from creating new worlds and sharing them with readers.
I enjoyed this book. it had a strong start and kept good pace. I liked both of the main characters. Lucinda was spirited and loyal, and Jack was a reliable stalwart. For the most part, a five star plot but the last few chapters were a little laboured, hence a final four stars. Recommended
Passion, peril and intrigue – Isabelle Goddard’s latest spellbinding Regency romance has got it all!
Lucinda Lacey is in desperate need of money. With her brother in debtors’ prison, Lucinda must raise enough cash to ensure that her beloved sibling’s life isn’t threatened any further. With no other option open to her, the gently bred Lucinda must throw all caution to the wind, wear men’s clothes and risk her life on the open road by adopting the guise of a highwayman. Lucinda has so far managed to evade the long arm of the law, but the burden of fear lays heavily upon her shoulders. With her guardian refusing to help her brother during this trying time, Lucinda must continue to court danger if she is to find the money which her brother so desperately needs. But when during one of her escapades, Lucinda comes across the incorrigible Jack Beaufort, Earl of Frensham, little does she realise that she has just stumbled straight into a situation that is even more dangerous than the hangman’s noose…
With scandal dogging his every move, Jack had decided to leave the bustle and hustle of London for the tranquil surroundings of the Sussex countryside. Jack had imagined spending most of his sojourn enjoying the peace and quiet of the English countryside – he certainly never expected to find himself facing a highwayman’s weapon the very first moment he set foot in Sussex! But worse was to come for Jack. No sooner had he recovered from his rather traumatic ordeal that he found himself locking horns with the delectable Miss Lucinda Lacey – a beautiful young woman whom he’s adamant he’s already met. Lucinda swears that she’s never clapped eyes on him before which makes Jack suspicious that the woman he cannot stop thinking about is hiding a secret so dangerous that she daren’t reveal it to anyone…
An inconvenient attraction to a man like Jack Beaufort is the last thing Lucinda needs! Saving her brother’s life might be uppermost in her mind, but Lucinda cannot stop herself from succumbing to Jack’s tempting kisses! Blazing passion soon gives way to a love that simply cannot be denied, but before Jack and Lucinda can grab this chance at happiness, they must first vanquish evil enemies that could jeopardise their future and everything which they hold dear to their heart.
Is Jack and Lucinda’s love strong enough to triumph against adversity? Or will they let uncontrollable forces destroy their burgeoning happiness?
A splendid read guaranteed to keep readers glued to its pages, Unmasking Miss Lacey is a heart-pounding tale of desire, temptation and danger fans of Regency romances will simply adore! With an honourable and valiant heroine, a dashing hero, emotional twists and turns, pulse-racing drama and breathless adventure, Unmasking Miss Lacey is an enjoyable, poignant and highly intriguing historical romance I couldn’t bear to put down!
Isabelle Goddard has once again outdone herself with this terrific tale and I cannot wait to read more outstanding Regency romances from this hugely talented writer of historical romantic fiction!
Wonderfully brilliant. What would you do to protect your family? Well Lucy tries her hand at being a highway man and then later bumps into her intended victim at her home of all places! What follows is a wonderful story of desperation and budding friendship that has the possibilities of a great love.
I LOVED this book! Lucinda was a great heroine and I really liked Jack's personality too. This was a fresh and witty read and the "highwayman" aspect was excellently done.
